Conlon Nancarrow (1912 - 1997) was one of the most original composers of the twentieth century. The fact that he worked for most of his life in relative obscurity was a result of his exile status as a composer of player piano music living in Mexico City. While much of the development of western art music can be seen as a gradual acceptance of dissonance in the pitch domain, Nancarrow devoted most of his composing to a series of dazzling Studies exploring temporal dissonance, in which parts of the music proceed independently at a variety of simultaneous tempi. About three quarters of the work employed canonic procedures. Canon and temporal dissonance In traditional canons, each voice enters at the same tempo as the original and its notes combine with those of the first to imply the desired harmony. In the example below (the tune "Frere Jacques"), the second voice enters after two measures. The original voice is written in such a way that it combines to make tonic and dominant harmonies when it is layered upon itself. The following diagrams represent time along the x-axis and pitch along the y-axis, like a player piano roll turned sideways. In 1937, he went to Spain as a member of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade to fight against the fascist Franco government. Nancarrow returned to the United States in 1939 and the following year moved to Mexico City where he currently resides. In the 1930s and early 40s, Nancarrow wrote pieces for solo piano, chamber groupings and orchestra. In 1949, he began writing exclusively for the player piano, punching the paper rolls on his own machine. Some of the early player piano works reflect Nancarrow's interest in jazz, blues, and Spanish music. As he further explored the possibilities of the player piano, his compositions became increasingly sophisticated and complex.In 1985, Nancarrow began again to compose for live performers, completing his "Piece No. 2 for Small Orchestra" in 1986.
