21. Conlon Nancarrow
Biography from Other Minds.
http://www.otherminds.org/shtml/Nancarrow.shtml

Born in Texarkana, Arkansas in 1912, Nancarrow was active in his early years as a trumpeter, playing jazz and other types of popular music. He attended the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music from 1929-32, and later studied composition and counterpoint in Boston with Nicolas Slonimsky, Walter Piston, and Roger Sessions (1933-36). He values most his work with Sessions: "The only formal studies I did that were important were the studies I had in strict counterpoint with Roger Sessions. That was the only formal training I ever had. And they were rigid! I'd do this strict counterpoint exercise, and then I'd take a piece of my music and say to him, 'What do you think of this?' 'Very interesting; where's your counterpoint exercise?'" Nancarrow also cites Bach and Stravinsky as seminal influences. In 1937 Nancarrow enlisted in the Abraham Lincoln Brigade to fight against Franco in the Spanish Civil War. On his return to the United States in 1939 he became involved in the New York new music scene, contributing several reviews to Modern Music and associating with other composers such as Elliot Carter and Aaron Copland.
Nancarrow was a dedicated socialist, which made him politically unacceptable in the United States. This was brought plainly home when he applied for a passport and was denied. Angry at such treatment, he moved to Mexico City in the early 1940s, becoming a Mexican citizen in 1956. He died there in 1997.

biography born in 1912 in texarkana, arkansas, conlon nancarrow studied composition in cincinnati and in boston with walter piston nicolas slonimsky , and roger sessions . in the 1930's he worked as a jazz trumpeter, and also studied indian and african music with henry cowell at the new school in new york city . in 1937 he joined the lincoln brigade and fought in spain against the fascist franco government. following his return in 1939 he was criticized for having been a premature anti-fascist by the united states government which took away his passport, and as a result he relocated in 1940 to mexico city up to this point he had written various works for piano and small ensembles. after his move to mexico , however, the ensuing 40 years were devoted almost entirely to works for player piano, with a few experiments with pneumatic percussion automatons and musique concrete. combining his long-standing interest in jazz with a delight in rhythmic counterpoint, he wrote a series of 60 studies for player piano that combine quasi-improvisatory with with astonishing rhythmic complexity and frequently awsome speeds, all made possible only by his method of punching holes by hand into the paper rolls that control the player piano(s). for many years he was known in the

About the Background Image

Conlon Nancarrow, 1990
EVER HEARD OF THE COMPOSER CONLON NANCARROW? Probably not. His isn't exactly a household name. But Nancarrow - who died in August, 1997 - inspired a generation of composers. He wrote music that was incredibly complex - so complex, in fact, that human beings simply couldn't play it. And because performers couldn't play what Nancarrow was writing, he began creating music expressly for an instrument that requires no human hand. It's an instrument that seems to fit better in pizza parlors and shoot-'em-up saloons in old Westerns than in serious classical music: the player piano. Audio Sampler

Conlon Nancarrow
The expatriate American experimentalist composer Conlon Nancarrow is increasingly recognized as having one of the most innovative musical minds of this century. His music, almost all written for player piano, is the most rhythmically complex ever written, couched in intricate contrapuntal systems using up to twelve different tempos at the same time. Yet despite its complexity, Nancarrow's music drew its early influence from the jazz pianism of Art Tatum and Earl Hines and from the rhythms of Indian music; Nancarrow's whirlwinds of notes are joyously physical in their energy. Composed in almost complete isolation from 1940, this music has achieved international fame only in the last few years. Born in 1912, the son of the mayor of Texarkana, Nancarrow fought in the Lincoln Brigade, then fled America to Mexico City to avoid being hounded for his former Communist affiliations. The author travelled to Mexico City to research Nancarrow's music and to discuss it with him. He analyses sixty-five works, virtually the composer's complete output, and includes a biographical chapter containing much information never before published. The Music of Conlon Nancarrow , Cambridge University Press, $49.95

With their dazzling acrobatic complexities, well beyond the technique of any human, Nancarrow's works are both amazingly beautiful and strangely unsettling. Wergo's recordings were made in 1988 at Conlon Nancarrow's Mexico City studio, using the composer's own custom-altered Ampico reproducing piano. The 140-page booklet includes numerous unpublished photographs, an essay by producer Charles Amirkhanian and a probing musical analysis by James Tenney." This set replaced the now deleted individuals sets that were previously issued by Wergo (60165, 60166, 6168). Priced as 5 CDs for the cost of 3 (in Wergo terms), so a bit more attractive than the original versions in that sense. Previous Page Index of Artists Next Page
