CONLON NANCARROW:
PERSONALITY and POLYPHONY
by Tom Rodwell (August 1999)
Conlon Nancarrow, (1912-1997) was born in Texarkana, studied composition from an early age, (with Slonimsky, Sessions, and Piston privately in Boston) and played jazz trumpet in local bar bands. He joined the Lincoln Brigade and fought Franco's fascists in 1930's Spain, also becoming a member of the Communist Party. Upon his return to the USA, he resumed composition, and associated with other new radicals in the New York scene, including John Cage and life-long friend Elliot Carter. Nancarrow's political leanings gradually attracted the interest of the state, and he was refused a passport upon application in 1940. Nancarrow moved to Mexico City, home until his death of heart failure at age eighty four. Early performances of his highly complex work were failures, often due to incompetent musicians, and his attempts to relaunch his compositional career ground to a halt in the (understandably) underfunded and ill-equipped Mexican contemporary music scene of the day. Frustrated by years of indifference and incompetence, Nancarrow withdrew from 'normal' musical circles, and, inspired by the writings of Henry Cowell, ordered an Ampico Reproducing Piano and the required hole-punching equipment for the pianola rolls. The player piano became his sole musical outlet, and he wrote over 50 'Studies' exclusively for the mechanical instruments until a sudden explosion of commissions in the 1980's and 1990's saw live musicians once again tackle his formidably polyrhythmic works.

The unique characteristic of most of Nancarrow's compositions is that most of them were notated by perforating player-piano rolls to mark the notes and rhythms and can be performed only by activating such piano rolls. This method of composition gave him total freedom in conjuring up the most complex contrapuntal, harmonic, and rhythmic combinations that no human pianist or number of human pianists could possibly perform. The method of composing itself was extremely laborious. A bar containing a few dozen notes might require an hour to stamp out on the piano roll. Although he lived in obscurity for most of his life, his works appreciated by only a few cognoscenti, wider recognition finally came in the 1980s. His works began appear on programs of new music throughout the world, and, most significantly, in 1982, he was awarded the MacArthur Foundation's "genius grant" of $300,000, allowing him to continue his work without concern for finances. He died in Mexico City in 1997, after battling a number of ailments for several years. The item on display here is one of his Player Piano Etudes Created 11/22/00. Comments and questions to

About the Background Image

Conlon Nancarrow, 1990
EVER HEARD OF THE COMPOSER CONLON NANCARROW? Probably not. His isn't exactly a household name. But Nancarrow - who died in August, 1997 - inspired a generation of composers. He wrote music that was incredibly complex - so complex, in fact, that human beings simply couldn't play it. And because performers couldn't play what Nancarrow was writing, he began creating music expressly for an instrument that requires no human hand. It's an instrument that seems to fit better in pizza parlors and shoot-'em-up saloons in old Westerns than in serious classical music: the player piano. Audio Sampler

The expatriate American experimentalist composer Conlon Nancarrow is increasingly recognized as having one of the most innovative musical minds of this century. His music, almost all written for player piano, is the most rhythmically complex ever written, couched in intricate contrapuntal systems using up to twelve different tempos at the same time. Yet despite its complexity, Nancarrow's music drew its early influence from the jazz pianism of Art Tatum and Earl Hines and from the rhythms of Indian music; Nancarrow's whirlwinds of notes are joyously physical in their energy. Composed in almost complete isolation from 1940, this music has achieved international fame only in the last few years. Born in 1912, the son of the mayor of Texarkana, Nancarrow fought in the Lincoln Brigade, then fled America to Mexico City to avoid being hounded for his former Communist affiliations. The author travelled to Mexico City to research Nancarrow's music and to discuss it with him. He analyses sixty-five works, virtually the composer's complete output, and includes a biographical chapter containing much information never before published.

Conlon Nancarrow, who died in 1997, was one of those brilliant composers most people have never heard of. Other contemporary experimental composers, however, have cited his works as major influences. Nancarrow wrote some of the most incredibly complex music. His music was so difficult, in fact, that people were literally unable to play it. Rather than change his style of composition, Nancarrow found a creative solution to allow his music to be played on a keyboard. He began writing music for player piano. Selected works

He was born and raised in Texarkana, Arkansas and went on to be one of the most respected composers of "modern" art music of the 20th century. He focused nearly all of his musical energy on writing very rhythmically complex music for the player piano. These photos were taken by Janet Greeson while she and her husband were in Mexico City in 1984 when we spent a day interviewing Mr. Nancarrow at his pleasant home in a residential section of the city. I've also included some excerpts from the interview. To hear his music for player pianos you can visit Mullins Library on the University of Arkansas campus in Fayetteville, Arkansas, which has a nice collection of his music in both recordings and scores. Also the German recording company Wergo has released three CD sets with most of his player piano music on them. Wergo 60165, 60166, 60168.
These are audio clips from our six hour long interview with Conlon Nancarrow in 1984. Feel free to email me if you want more access to some of the interview or the 50 odd photos we took:
