Ernest John Moeran
After the war, suffering the frequent effects of artists (and all) who have undergone such severe trauma, Moeran nevertheless reentered the RCM and resumed his musical education, behaving generally like many other young men of his age. He became friendly with John Ireland, Harriet Cohen (who gained as much fame as Bax's beloved as she did as a pianist), Arnold Bax, and, especially, Peter Warlock (or Philip Heseltine when he was writing musical criticism). He fell in and out of love, but the primary love of his life was Peers Coetmore, whom he courted with the wonderful Cello Concerto. (For years the only recording of the concerto was that of its dedicatee, Ms. Coetmore, which did not do justice to this wonderful piece. Now there is a recording by Raphael Wallfisch which gives much more insight into what a truly lovely composition it is. BTW, the courtship was successful, the marriage was not.) By the middle of Moeran's life he had turned strongly to his Celtic roots, delighting in Ireland, its people, and its scenery and returning there frequently. His symphony was a work which reflected the dichotomy of both his English and Irish backgrounds.

Ernest John Moeran
Ernest John Moeran December 31 December 1 ) was an English composer. Moeran was born in Heston , the son of a clergyman of Irish descent, but his family soon moved to Fen Country, Norfolk . He learnt violin and piano as a child and, from 1913, studied in the Royal College of Music with Charles Villiers Stanford . After being seriously wounded in World War I , he returned to the College to resume his studies, now with John Ireland . His first mature compositions, songs and chamber music, date from this time. He also began collecting and arranging folk music of Norfolk and other regions. By the mid-1920s, Moeran had became close friends with Peter Warlock and they lived for some years in Eynsford, Kent , notorious among the locals for their frequent drunken revelry. For the rest of his life, Moeran was to have problems with alcohol, later joined by mental instability. After Warlock's death, he became interested in his Irish roots and began spending most of his time in Kenmare, County Kerry . He married the cellist Peers Coetmore in 1945. The marriage was not entirely happy although it inspired some of Moeran's masterpieces, the Cello Concerto and Cello Sonata. He died suddenly in Kenmare at the age of 55.

Page written by Reg Williamson Norwich Music Society Born London, December 31st 1894 Died Kenmare, Co Kerry, December 1st 1950 Ernest John Moeran was the son of a Norfolk clergyman of Irish descent. Educated at Uppingham School, he learned violin and played in a string quartet. He entered the Royal College of Music in 1913, studied composition with John Ireland, then served in the Army in the Great War. Wounded, he returned to his old school in 1919 as music master, and devoted his life to composing thereafter. He collected folk songs in Norfolk, where he lived for many years, then retiring to Ireland where he died suddenly. Early work was influenced by folk song and Delius, adopting a strong lyrical style. His first published work was Three Piano pieces (1919). Ernest John Moeran, known as Jack to his friends, was born in Heston, Middlesex on 31st December 1894, the second son of the Rev J. W. W. and Esther Moeran. Shortly after his birth the family moved to Bacton, in the remote Norfolk Fen Country. As a child he learned to play the violin and piano, and made some early compositional efforts while at Uppingham School (works he later destroyed).
