    24. GIACOMO MEYERBEER
meyerbeer, giacomo (17911863), German composer, first known as Jakob Meyer Beer, was born at Berlin on the 5th of September I79I,1 of a wealthy and talented

    GIACOMO MEYERBEER
MEYERBEER, GIACOMO His next opera, Les Huguenots, was first performed in 1836. In gorgeous coloring, rhetorical force, consistency of dramatic treatment, and careful accentuation of individual types, it is at least the equal of Robert le Diable. In two points only did its interest fall short of that inspired by the earlier work. Meyerbeer had shown himself so eminently successful in his treatment of the supernatural that one regretted the omission of that element; and, more important still, the fifth act proved to be an anti-climax. The true interest of the drama culminates at the close of the fourth act, when Raoul, leaping from the window to his death, leaves Valentine fainting upon the ground. The opera now usually ends at the fourth act. After the production of Les Huguenots Meyerbeer spent many years in the preparation of his next greatest worksL'Africaine and Le Prophete. The libretti of both these operas were furnished MEYNELLMEZIERES, P. DE by Scribe; and both were subjected to countless changes; in fact, the story of L'Africaine was more than once entirely rewritten. Meanwhile Meyerbeer accepted the appointment of kapellmeister to the king of Prussia, and spent some years at Berlin, where he produced Ein Feldlager in Schlesien, a German opera, in which Jenny Lind made her first appearance in Prussia. Here also he composed, in 1846, the overture to his brother Michael's drama, Struensee. But his chief care at this period was bestowed upon the worthy presentation of the works of others. He began by producing his dead friend Weber's Euryanthe, with scrupulous attention to the composer's original idea. With equal unselfishness he procured the acceptance of Rienzi and Der fliegende Hollander, the first two operas of Richard Wagner, who, then languishing in poverty and exile, would, but for him, have found it impossible to obtain a hearing in Berlin. With Jenny Lind as prima donna and Meyerbeer as conductor, the opera flourished brilliantly in the Prussian capital; but the anxieties materially shortened the composer's life.

    Meyerbeer, Giacomo
composer, pianist germany 5 Sep 1791, Vogelsdorf (near Berlin) - 2 May 1864, Paris
    Real name: Beer, Yaakov Liebmann
Grave location: Berlin: Jüdischer Friedhof, Schönhauser Allee 22/23
Son of the rich sugar refiner Judah Herz Beer and the daughter of a banker from Berlin. The family lived in Berlin and as a child he was already recognized as one the best pianists in the city. He was taught by Muzio Clementi and Abbe Vogler and made friends with Carl Maria von Weber. In 1815 Salieri adviced him to learn voice composition in Italy and using the name Giacomo Meyerbeer he started composing Italian opera's.
Until 1824 he composed six opera's that rivalled even Rossini's and found himself famous. "Il Crociato in Egitto" attracted attention abroad and made him move to Paris. In 1826 he married his first cousin Minna Mosson.
In 1831 his opera "Robert le Diable" was produced. It was very influencial in France. Other French opera's were "Les Huguenots" (1836), "Le Prophète" (1849) and "L'africaine" (1865). In 1842 he became Director of Music in Berlin and there he created the opera "Ein Feldlager de Schliessen".
Meyerbeer was attacked by Wagner in the latter's "Jewry in Music" (1850), who accused him of commercialism in his work. In earlier years he had supported Wagner during the production of his "Rienzi" in Dresden as well as financially, and he never responded to in public to Wagner's attack.

Komponisten Giacomo Meyerbeer Biographie Opern Photo Gallery Home Page Die Biographie von Giacomo Meyerbeer Deutscher Opernkomponist, Meyerbeer stammte aus der wohlhabenden Bankiersfamilie Beer (eig. Jakob Liebmann Meyer Beer) in Berlin.
