Felix Mendelssohn (Bartholdy) Born 3 February, 1809 in Hamburg, Germany Died 4 November, 1847 in Leipzig, Germany A prominent composer and conductor of the early 19th century, Mendelssohn’s works provide a wonderful amalgamation of Classical and Romantic styling. The grandson of philosopher Moses Mendelssohn (1729-86), Felix Mendelssohn was afforded a rich artistic and intellectual education during his formative years. Both Felix and his sister, Fanny, traveled extensively within elite European cultural circles (family friends included Goethe, Heine, and Hegel) achieving fame for their virtuosic keyboard skill. It is, as a result, no surprise that both children showed precocious compositional talent. Felix’s development was nothing short of miraculous, writing his first Singspiel, Die Soldatenliebschaft, at the age of twelve. By seventeen, he had already completed two of his most famous works, his Octet for Strings (1825) and the concert overture to Midsummer Night’s Dream (1826). Even so, Mendelssohn maintained an active interest in other scholarly pursuits and enrolled at the University of Berlin in 1827.

    FELIX MENDELSSOHN
Born: February 3, 1809. Hamburg, Germany
Died: November 4, 1847. Leipzig, Germany
German composer and conductor. Mendelssohn was an important figure in the revival of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach in the nineteenth century.

The Mendelssohn household was one of the cultural centers of Berlin. The family was wealthy thanks to its banking interests, and its garden home served as a concert hall in which Felix and his sister Fanny often performed and had their works played. It was on just such an occasion that the public heard a marvelous work by the seventeen-year-old Felix: his Overture to A Midsummer Night's Dream
Felix Mendelssohn was something of a prodigy. He wrote his first piece at the age of eleven, beginning a prolific period in which the youth created pieces in virtually every genre from sonatas to concertos and even a Singspiel. At the age of twenty, he conducted a performance of Bach 's St. Matthew Passion at the Berlin Singakademie. This was the first modern performance of the work and was an important event in the nineteenth century rediscovery of Bach.
At about the same time, Felix began to travel widely; the next few years took him to England, Scotland and Italy. Besides spreading his reputation, these journeys were important for the pieces that they yielded. Some, such as his "Italian" symphony and the

... Home Page Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy Life Felix Mendelssohn was born into a wealthy cultured family. When Mendelssohn was 2 years old, the family moved to Berlin where they became widely known for their artistic and musical activities. Mendelssohn was a child prodigy and made his first public appearance as a pianist when he was only nine. He was associated with the revival of public interest in the music of Johann Sebastian Bach In the early 1830s he began a three year grand tour through Europe. He visited England where he was warmly received and conducted the London Philharmonic Orchestra. He also journeyed through Scotland where he conceived the idea for the Hebrides Overture. He was later conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig, where he also helped to found the Leipzig Conservatoire. He continued his frequent visits to Great Britain and in 1847 he visited the country for the tenth time. His style of composition combined something of the economy of means of the classical period with the Romanticism of a later age. He wrote his finest music before he was eighteen and among his later works only his chamber music fulfills his early promise.
