With two hundred published works in every medium, which are continually performed all over the world, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is universally acknowledged as one of the foremost composers of our time. He lives in a croft, in a remote valley on the island of Hoy, in the Orkneys, off the North coast of Scotland, where he writes most of his music. His major theatrical works include: the operas Taverner Resurrection , and The Lighthouse (which is one of the most performed twentieth-century operas); the full-length ballets Salome and Caroline Mathilde ; and the music-theatre works Eight Songs for a Mad King and Miss Donnithorne's Maggot . His large output of orchestral works includes six symphonies and eleven concertos, as well as the hugely popular An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise , which was written as a commission for the Boston Pops Orchestra and seen by millions of people all over the world at the Last Night of the Proms. Maxwell Davies has received numerous honorary doctorates and awards. He has also written a large repertoire of works for performance by non-specialist children, which include the opera Cinderella as well as ten other theatrical pieces.

Sir Peter Maxwell Davies is universally acknowledged as one of the foremost composers of our time. His charismatic and versatile musical personality, coupled with the world-wide spread of performances has meant that he reaches an unusually large and varied public.
As the critic in the Wiener Zeitung wrote following a concert of all Maxwell Davies works at the Musikverein in Vienna “A great and significant occasion on the Vienna concert scene and the public took full advantage of it: the Musikverein was almost fully booked and scarcely anyone left in the interval. I know of no other living composer who could bring that off with a programme consisting entirely of his own works.”
Maxwell Davies is also active as a conductor and has recently finished ten years as Composer/Conductor of both the BBC Philharmonic and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras, and is Composer Laureate with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra. He has also conducted many orchestras in Europe and North America, including the Cleveland Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Leipzig Gewandhaus, the Russian National Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra.
Maxwell Davies is now concentrating his compositional efforts on chamber music, and current commissions include the cycle of ten string quartets which have been commissioned by the CD company Naxos (and called the Naxos Quartets), which will be performed in their entirety at the Wigmore Hall in London by the Maggini Quartet over a period of five years.

Peter Maxwell Davies
Biography (approximately 6,500 words) by John Warnaby
Composers generally fall into two broad categories: those who pioneer new compositional ideas, including playing techniques, and who are often regarded as iconoclastic because they appear to reject tradition; and those who use a process of synthesis to sum up recent developments. Peter Maxwell Davies has fulfilled both roles, sometimes in the same work. He was born on 8 September 1934, in Salford, now part of Greater Manchester. His first important musical experience occurred when he was four, when he was taken to a local production of Gilbert and Sullivan's The Gondoliers , and shortly afterwards, he began receiving piano lessons. His parents actively encouraged him, and soon he gravitated naturally to composing. His first public performance took place in 1942, when a piano piece was played in the BBC Home Service's Children's Hour. A great deal of juvenilia followed, and he now suggests that some of the pieces he produced in his teens already contain 'fingerprints' of his mature style. However, music was discouraged at Leigh Grammar School, so Max continued this aspect of his education independently. He was helped by the Henry Watson Library, in Manchester, where he could study a vast range of scores, and by the advent of the BBC Third Programme, which introduced him to a great deal of unfamiliar music and enabled him to broaden his cultural and scientific interests. He memorised many works from the standard symphonic repertoire but also concentrated on Renaissance polyphony, as well as Indian music. After obtaining his A-levels, he gained admission to both the Royal Manchester College of Music, and Manchester University.

"Quartet Movement, a brilliant play with hectic scales and cross rhythms, was written in Davies's teens and salvaged from sketches. Five Piano Pieces and Sonatano for Clarient and Piano date from a little later. Both works are given here with lucidity and grace." GRAMOPHONE, Duncan Druce The two works from the 1960s could hardly be more different from such angular, painterly works: the String Quartet is tranquil for the most part, and expressively quite cool; Hymnos, belonging to the same period as music theatre works like Revelation and Fall and Eight Songs for a Mad King, full of extreme, expressionistic contrasts. Guy Cowley and Ian Pace's playing is strong and well controlled, though they do not neglect the necessary touch of wildness that characterised the original performances and recording by Alan Hacker and Stephen Pruslin. All the playing, indeed, is excellent - the Kreutzer Quartet's pure tone and fine intonation are great assets in the pared-down idiom of the two Little Quartets. With realistic, sensitive recording, this is a must for anyone interested in Maxwell Davies."

The following interview was a backgrounder for a feature article that ran in the Pasadena Star-News in advance of Los Angeles area performances of two works of his - the Violin Concerto, performed by Isaac Stern and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Little String Quartet No. 2, performed by the Alexander Quartet at a Coleman Chamber Concert in Pasadena. I spoke with Sir Peter Maxwell Davies on January 11, 1988.
DB: Let me ask you about the Violin Concerto that is going to be performed here (in Los Angeles) by Isaac Stern. What can you tell me about it? PMD: Well, for a start, I wrote it for Isaac so it’s, I hope, a warm and lyrical piece. Also, I don't know if you know that I live in Orkney in the north of Scotland - DB: Oh yes, that's well known! PMD: - which has got a very strong folk fiddle tradition, and the piece has got quite a lot of folk fiddle elements in it from that particular region of Scotland. It's the kind of thing you hear when you go to a pub there, you know, where there's a fiddle or to dance and playing dance tunes. It's got a lot of that in it, particularly the tune in the slow movement. It could be a kind of folk tune although it isn't. DB: So you would say that this is actually a very listenable piece for your lay audience that might not be familiar with your earlier output.

Works for Guitar It's the record that made me take the guitar seriously. Critic's Choice: Best of Last 25 Years. San Francisco Examiner As a collection, these pieces reflect some trends for guitar music in the 80's a freedom from the influence of the Spanish tradition; individual and disparate languages of composition; the blurring of stylistic divisions; and the increased incorporation of the guitar in chamber music settings. These five pieces incorporate, in turn, a painting, a Central African horn theme (Reich's "Electric Counterpoint" recorded here in its first entirely acoustic rendition), an abstract form, the nocturnal sounds of the Carribean, and a poem that was inspired by a painting. Three generations of composers are represented here. Of the five, only Takemitsu plays guitar. Tippett and Reich first turned their attention to the solo guitar in the 1980's, as many composers did, while Davies and Takemitsu continued career long associations with the instrument. Sierra had written for both guitar and string quartet when I decided to commission him to enrich the chamber repertoire. Track List
