Miya Masaoka works simultaneously in the varied musical worlds of jazz, Western classical music, electronic music, traditional Japanese music and free improvisation, and is currently the director of an ensemble of traditional Japanese court music, the San Francisco Gagaku Society. She has studied Japanese music with court musician Suenobu Togi, and holds music degrees from San Francisco State University, a Masters Degree in Composition from Mills College and certificates from the Chikushi gakko school. Her debut recording for solo koto, Compositions/Improvisations received critical acclaim in Europe and the United States, and made several "Top Ten" lists, including CODA, The Bay Guardian (from two different critics) and the East Bay Express.
She has performed extensively in Japan and the US and also has toured in India and Canada; both solo and with a wide variety of musicians and traditions, including Pharoah Sanders, L. Subramaniam, The Berlin Rias Dorchester Symphony and the Berlin Opera, Rova Saxophone Quartet, Steve Coleman, Mark Izu, Francis Wong, George Lewis, Henry Kaiser, Fred Frith, Wadada Leo Smith, Rohan de Saram (Arditti String Quartet), James Newton and many others. Her Eastern sense of time and space, multiplicities of aesthetics and improvisational skills have distinguished Masaoka as a new virtuoso and innovator on the contemporary landscape.

For his debut recording with former Kronos Quartet cellist Joan Jeanrenaud and koto master Miya Masaoka, Rova Saxophone Quartet's Larry Ochs composed four extended works for improvisation that compel the players to be both quick-thinking and full-feeling. On the album's title track and on "Mystery Street," Ochs set up structures to tell his bandmates how and when but not always precisely what to play: The ambience (if not often the exact notes) is established in advance. This gives the tunes their distinctive characters while allowing the musicians enough freedom to interact spontaneously. As a result, both tracks cohere with a sophisticated musical logic yet develop lush, emotional cores woeful, haunted cello, hallucinatory koto (which at times sounds like an ethereal harp from the Magic Kingdom), and variously soulful or attitudinal sax.

Momix, a troupe of dance-illusionists Miya Masaoka , Bay Area composer and master of the koto (a traditional Japanese stringed instrument), has earned an international rep in the past decade exploring the concept of music as a living, breathing entity with no limits. An extraordinary improviser who has collaborated with many of the world's creative-music leaders (from NYC pianist Cecil Taylor to Berlin bassist Peter Kowald), her performances draw from a wide range of sources, including gagaku (ancient melodies from the Japanese imperial courts), Thelonious Monk harmonies, and otherworldly timbral manipulations from her own bag of extended techniques. She also uses customized interactive electronics, complete with laser towers and computer networks, to extend the acoustic sound and polyrhythmic potential of her instrument into the cosmos. Beyond pushing her music to the max, Masaoka is keenly aware of performance as a visual art to complement the aural. For the live presentation a few years back of

Masaoka, Miya Monk’s Japanese Folk Song dizim 4104-2 Muzyka **** Realizacja ***** Wiele by³o we wspó³czesnym jazzie przedsiêwziêæ dziwnych, realizowanych na nietypowych instrumentach, odwo³uj¹cych siê do klasycznego materia³u standardowego. Chwilami sprawia to wra¿enie jakby Workman i Cyrille zapomnieli, ¿e przez te wszystkie lata byli jazzmanami z krwi i koœci.

Wed³ug mnie potwierdzaj¹ one jedynie fakt, ¿e muzycy lepiej graj¹, brzmi¹, kiedy maj¹ przed sob¹ ¿ywego odbiorcê.

http://www.alpertawards.org/music.html
"I consider myself an investigative artist who explores ways of thinking about sound, ways of probing deeper into our relationships with the natural environment by charting interactions and extracting sonic information from objects, instruments and living things.Ultimately, my work seeks to instigate discovery and transformation within myself, the musicians I play with, and the listeners."
Composer, performer, sound artist and writer Miya Masaoka began her work as a kotoist studying traditional techniques and multiple styles of both Western and Japanese music; today she is a virtuosic experimental performer whose musical compositions and performance works pose questions about identity, the body, and the relationship between humans and the plant and animal kingdoms. In addition to creating solo, chamber, orchestral and choral compositions, Masaoka creates film, video, multi-channel and installation works that often employ advanced computer technology. An improviser working across new music, electronics, jazz and koto performance, she has collaborated with artists such as Andrew Cyrille, Toshiko Akiyoshi, L. Subramaniam, Fred Frith, and Pharoah Sanders. She has worked with Madagascar cockroaches, electrical signals from philodendrons and the bodies of naked men, and the sounds of swarming bees.
Born 1958, Washington, D.C.

composer/performance artist Miya Masaoka separately monitors the electrical feedback of plants and human brain activity as the plant and person respond to the audience in the space of the LAB. The audience will be invited to interact with the plant and the human being, eat leafy greens and meat on a nearby snack table, and contemplate the relationship of plants and human beings while listening to the sounds they generate. Vegetarians may choose to eat only greens. Randy Nordschow will present Fishnets in the Year 2000, a work for mixed ensemble based on I, a text by John Cage. In the spirit of Cage, this piece involves indeterminate elements such as instrumentation, and performance length. Nordschow and other invited instrumentalists will perform as an ensemble acting independently from each other. The music is a direct translation of I from Cage's Norton Lectures I-VI, delivered at Harvard University over thirteenyears ago. images by Donald Swaringen
