YOUR AD HERE You are HERE >> Music : General Classical Composer Biography: Gustav Mahler
by Betty Fry
January 29, 2002 Gustav Mahler was born in 1860 of Jewish parents, and was one of fourteen children. His father was a small town brewer, running the equivalent of today's off-licence. Although something of a bully – he is known to have mistreated his wife – he appears to have encouraged his son's evident musical gifts and, at ten, Gustav Mahler was giving his first recital.
My present feelings of frustration with things that are not going well prompted me to put the Third Movement of his ‘ Symphony No.1 in D Major' on to my Disc player, because there is more than a hint of irony in this parody of a funeral march, with snatches of folk tunes and a distinctly Yiddish melody blended in.
The mood is set with the round-song ‘ Freres Jacques' made deeply somber; a double bass ponderously intones the usually jolly music in a minor key, and muffled drum beats add to the funereal air. Other themes intervene, including a lilting Jewish dance, both sad yet sprightly. Another more touching interlude is one of Mahler's own songs. Then the march returns before finally dying away to soft cymbal strokes. The echoes of Jewish music in this movement recall his childhood in the small town of Iglau, now known as Jihlava in the Czech Republic.
Mahler finished this symphony in 1888, the year in which he became musical director of the Royal Opera in Budapest. This was a first step in his meteoric rise as a conductor, which culminated in his appointment in 1897 to the post of Musical Director of the Vienna Court Opera – one of the most coveted positions in the world of music, but only at the expense of converting from Judaism to Catholicism. This may also explain why he often juxtaposed music of sorrow or anguish, with music from everyday life, as he does in this symphony.

Gustav Mahler was born in Kalischt. He was the son of a poor Jewish pedlar and in later years he referred to himself as a thrice homeless man: a Bohemian among Austrians, an Austrian among Germans and a Jew among the people of the whole world. He began to study piano at the age of six and was already an accomplised pianist when he entered the Vienna Conservatoire at the age of 15. Much of his career was spent as an opera conductor working in Budapest, Hamburg and finally in Vienna, where his energy and competence as artistic director soon made the Vienna Court Opera the finest company in Europe. Mahler resigned from this post in 1907 when he was unable to sustain the workload any longer due to heart problems and the death of his eldest daughter. He spent the last years of his life conducting in Europe and the United States. He was a prolific composer and tried to write music so varied and grandiose that the whole world was reflected in it. Gustav Mahler Works Mahler completed nine symphonies, leaving a tenth unfinished, in addition to Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), a symphony in all but name, based on old Chinese poems.

Gustav Mahler - his life Gustav Mahler was born on 7 July 1860 in Bohemia and died on 18 May 1911 aged 50. His father was an innkeeper, and Gustav was the second of 14 children, though many of his siblings died as children, and his musical gifted brother Otto committed suicide in 1895. In 1901 he married Alma Schindler and they had two daughters together, Anna and Maria. His early marriage seemed to be happy, and some love themes in his works depict Alma or his relationship with her. Strains began to show in their marriage after the tragic death of Maria, aged four, following completion of Mahler's Kindertotenlieder. On top of this he was diagnosed with a fatal heart condition and subject not just to musical criticism but also public expressions of anti-Semitism. Some years later, when Mahler's works were beginning to receive a certain recognition, Alma had succumbed to alcoholism. At the sanatorium where she was treated she met and had an affair with Walter Gropius. A life so full of tragic events clearly had a major influence on much of Mahler's output, though there is also much in his music which expresses joy and hope. Mahler has said that his music is about life, and there is clearly an autobiographical aspect to his works, where a "hero" struggles with the meaning of life, death, love and disappointment. However, Mahler withdrew any programmatic comments he had previously made about his compositions saying that they should be appreciated as pure music and this is indeed the best approach.
