Introduction
Mahler was a composer of symphonies and lieder cycles. However, during his lifetime, he was known, for the most part, as one of the world's greatest conductors. Mahler rose to prominence as musical director of the Vienna Opera, and under his leadership the VO experienced its golden age. Mahler finished his conducting career in the United States, serving with Toscanini as conductor of the Metropolitan Opera and solely as music director of the New York Philharmonic. Mahler completed ten symphonies (nine numbered works and Das Lied von der Erde) and died leaving sketches and two completed movements of a tenth numbered symphony. (Performance versions of the 10th have been presented by several individuals, including Deryck Cooke [in several revised forms], Clinton Carpenter, Joseph Wheeler and Remo Mazetti.
Biographical note
The below is a short biographical note followed by an article by Gabriel Engel (the author of the above biography) covering Mahler's orchestral style. This site also contains the full text of Gabriel Engel's biography of Gustav Mahler , with numerous added illustrations and photographs.

Gustav Mahler
Having lived a divided life of triumph and heartbreak, of optimism and hopelessness, it is only fitting that the music of Gustav Mahler portrays such conflict and arouses varying reactions in listeners, from fierce adoration to outright dislike. Mahler was born on July 7, 1860, in Kalischt, Bohemia, to the owners of a brandy distillery.  Gustav was the second of twelve children born to Bernhard and Marie Mahler, six of whom died very young and one of whom committed suicide.  Gustav did show a musical precocity and Bernhard, open to his son's talent, began paying for piano lessons.  Gustav gave his first public recital in Iglau at the age of ten, before finding his way to the Prague Gymnasium and Vienna Conservatory. His conservatory period was generally a success, having won awards for piano playing and composition, but having first dealt with the anti-Semitic views of Vienna's musical establishment.  Mahler chose to conduct while earning a sparse composing income, working through the smaller halls of Bohemia and Hungary before establishing himself as a podium tour de force with appointments in Prague (1885-6), Leipzig (1886-8), Budapest (1888-91), Hamburg (1891-7), and, ultimately, Vienna (1897-1901).  Mahler was popular in his conducting role, leading revolutionary changes in orchestral repertoire and how opera, particularly Wagner, is presented.

Gustav Mahler was an Austrian composer and conductor. His compositions are few in numberthey consist chiefly of nine completed symphonies and seven song cyclesbut vast in scale, often taking an hour or more to perform and calling for a very large orchestra, sometimes with a chorus and vocal soloists. Little appreciated in its own time, Mahler's music is now seen as an important link between the lyrical impulse of the Romantic era and the more ironic attitudes of the arts in the 20th century. The same tension between idealism and harsh reality that inspired much of his music also characterized Mahler's career as a conductor, where his refined taste and perfectionism often had magnificent artistic results, but also tended to alienate audiences and musicians.
The son of a Jewish distiller, Mahler heard a rich variety of folk and art music during his Bohemian boyhood; the melodies that give compassionate humanity to his symphonies have their roots here. He studied in Vienna, taking courses at both the conservatory and the university, and attending the lectures of composer Anton Bruckner. In 1880, shortly before making his conducting debut at a summer theater in the Austrian spa of Hall, Mahler completed his first mature composition, the cantata Das Klagende Lied . For the next decade or so, Mahler accepted conducting posts at one opera house after another, wearing out his welcome in each new place with his authoritarian discipline and his devotion to serious opera. By sheer persistence and the excellence of his performances, he had some success in promoting the operas of

Epoch: Late Romantic

Gustav Mahler (1860-1911)
Detailed Information about Introduction (born Kaliste, Bohemia 7 July, 1860; died Vienna, 18 May 1911). In 1860 his family moved to Jihlava, where Gustav took piano and theory lessons. From 1875 to 1878 he was at Vienna Conservatory, where he studied the piano, harmony and composition. After that he attended university lectures, worked as a music teacher and composed Das klagende Lied , a cantata indebted to the operas of Weber and Wagner but also showing many conspicuously Mahlerian features. In 1880 Mahler accepted a conducting post at a summer theatre at Bad Hall, and he was engaged in a similar capacity in 1881 and 1883 at the theatres in Ljubljana and Olomouc. Between these appointments he engaged in composition and other conducting until, in autumn 1883, he became music director at Kassel. He found conditions uncongenial, and the repertory consisted solely of light opera; but an unhappy love affair with one of the singers led to the composition of his first masterpiece, the song cycle Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen , and the inception of the closely related First Symphony Early in 1885 Mahler secured the post of second conductor at the Neues Stadttheater in Leipzig, to begin in July 1886, and a few months later he resigned his post at Kassel. The intervening year he spent at the Landestheater in Prague, where he had the opportunity of conducting operas by

Mahler, Gustav (1860 - 1911)
Born at Kaliste in Bohemia, the son of a Jewish pedlar, Gustav Mahler later described himself as three times homeless, a Bohemian in Austria, an Austrian among Germans and a Jew throughout the world, everywhere an intruder, never welcomed. His principal musical training was at the Vienna Conservatory, after which he embarked on a career as a conductor which took him to important positions in Budapest, Hamburg and finally at the Vienna State Opera, where he made a number of major reforms. Hostility fomented by sections of the press forced his resignation in 1907, after which he briefly continued a distinguished international career as a conductor, notably in New York, until his death in 1911. As a composer Mahler wrote symphonies that absorbed into their texture and form the tradition of German song in music that reflected in many ways the spirit of the time in which he lived, in all its variety. Orchestral Music Mahler completed nine symphonies, leaving a tenth unfinished, in addition to Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), a symphony in all but name, settings of a series of poems derived from the Chinese. The first of the symphonies, sometimes known as "Titan", includes a remarkable ironic funeral march that transforms a nursery tune. Symphonies Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 8 make use of voices, the last of these on a massive scale. The symphonies, in their variety of mood, offer a reflection of the world, with music that may occasionally be garish and yet often reaches unsurpassable heights.
