Machaut, Guillaume de (c. 1300 - 1377)
Guillaume de Machaut, a leading French composer and poet of the 14th century, was born in Rheims, were he spent the greater part of his life, after earlier employment in the service of John of Luxemburg, King of Bohemia. He was employed subsequently by various members of the nobility, including the future Charles V of France. He held various church benefices and as a musician was pre-eminent in the period in the history of music known as the Ars nova, when composers created music of increased rhythmic complexity. Church Music Machaut's best known composition is his Messe de Notre Dame, Mass of Our Lady, an early example of a cyclic setting of the liturgical text, in which the sections are musically related. His Hoquetus David makes similar use of the technique of isorhythm, in which a given basic sequence of notes, derived normally from plainchant, is divided into a repeated rhythmic pattern. The hocket referred to in the title is a musical hiccough, a popular technical device of the time, in which the musical line is interrupted by sudden rests. Major Works:

Machaut's Messe de Notre Dame is the earliest known polyphonic setting of the Catholic mass.
Other Information:
Machaut was probably born in Machaut, a town in the Champagne region of France. He died in Rheims. Machaut was a musician, poet, and an educated priest. He worked and traveled in a variety of capacities for King John of Bohemia. He also worked in the court of Charles V of France. He was canon of Reims from 1337 until his death in April of 1377. He is regarded as the most prominent composer of the 14th century and is the composer of earliest existing polyphonic setting of the Catholic mass (by a single composer) and many other works, sacred and secular. Most of his 23 motets were in the traditional form using a cantus firmus tenor accompanied by upper voices with different texts. Motets of this time were getting longer, more secular, and more rhythmically complex. Machaut's motets use the techniques of isorhythm and hocket. He also composed polyphonic virelais (Abba), rondeaux (ABaAabAB), and ballades (aabC). These were known as the formes fixes and were composed in a style anticipating the Ars Nova.

Probably educated in Reims, he entered the service of John of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia, as a royal secretary, circa 1323. The king helped him to procure a canonry in Reims, which was confirmed in 1335. Machaut settled there circa 1340, although he continued in royal service until the king's death (1346). He then served various members of the French high nobiIity, including John, Duke of Berry, his later years being dedicated to the manuscript compilation of his works. With his prolific output of motets and songs, Machaut was the single most important figure of the French Ars Nova. MIDI FILE - Rose, Liz, Printemps, Verdure He followed and developed the guidelines of Philippe de Vitry's treatise Ars nova and, in particular, observed Vitry's unprecedented advocation of duple time in many of his works, even in his setting of the Ordinary of the Mass. MIDI FILE - Agnus Dei Only in some of his lais and virelais and the Hoquetus David did he consistently adhere to 13th-century rhythmic patterns and genres. His own rhythmic style is novel in its use of variety and motivic interest, particularly through syncopation, and in his development of isorhythmic techniques (which he often extended to all voices): all but three of his 23 motets, and four of the movements of the Messe de Nostre Dame, are isorhythmic.

    The tradition of courtly love
Expressed in the poetry and music of Guillaume de Machaut
The medieval period was a time of transition. While religion still played a large part in most lives, much of the thought was moving towards the secular - and the earthy in every sense. Feudalism, and the ideal of chivalry, inspired a notion of honour inspired by a lady’s favour. Imagination, too, reigned supreme, transmitted by the medieval mind into gargoyles, unicorns, and the poetry that was considered a natural form of expression. Machaut’s work may be considered as “classical” music, and this too involved transition. Previously, the “good” music was entertainment for the nobility only, where it now was becoming a source of enjoyment for all classes. It is no accident that the secular chanson blossomed in Machaut’s time. This was the result of developments during the previous two centuries. The troubadours and trouveres had established a variety of monophonic chanson types, from which the rondeau, virelai, and ballade emerged as a means of expression for both poet and musician. (Machaut was both.) The songs of the troubadours were built on the product of chivalric ideals: the notion of courtly love. Through Machaut and later master composers, the inspiration of the amour courtois gave birth to the chanson.
