Martin Luther King, Jr. Julian Wasser Audio and Video Clips
(b. Jan. 15, 1929, Atlanta, Ga., U.S.d. April 4, 1968, Memphis, Tenn.), eloquent black Baptist minister, who led the Civil Rights Movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. His leadership was fundamental to that movement's success in ending the legal segregation of blacks in the South and other portions of the United States. King rose to national prominence through the organization of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference , promoting nonviolent tactics such as the massive March on Washington (1963) to achieve civil rights. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1964. The U.S. Congress voted to observe a national holiday in his honour, beginning in 1986, on the third Monday in January.
Early years.
King came from a family steeped in the tradition of the Southern black ministry: both his father and maternal grandfather were Baptist preachers. At the age of 15 he entered Morehouse College, Atlanta, under a special program for gifted students, receiving his B.A. in 1948. As an undergraduate his earlier interests in medicine and law were eclipsed by a decision in his senior year to enter the ministry, as his father had urged. Spending the next three years at Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pa. (bachelor of divinity, 1951), King first became acquainted with Mohandas Gandhi's philosophy of nonviolence as well as with the thought of contemporary Protestant theologians. He was elected president of the student body and was graduated with the highest academic average in his class. From Crozer he went to Boston University (Ph.D., 1955), where, in seeking a firm foundation for his own theological and ethical inclinations, he began to focus his attention on conceptions of the relationship of man to God. In his doctoral dissertation, "A Comparison of the Conceptions of God in the Thinking of Paul Tillich and Henry Nelson Wieman," his conclusions were fairly Niebuhrian. King himself conceived of God as an active, personal entity; man's salvation was to be found neither in the quest for social progress nor in the unaided power of reason; faith in God's guidance was the essential thing.

This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity. But one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still not free. O ne hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. S o we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition. In a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.

Martin Luther King, Jr.
was born on January 15, 1929 at his family home in Atlanta, Georgia. King was an eloquent Baptist minister and leader of the civil-rights movement in America from the Mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. King promoted non-violent means to achieve civil-rights reform and was awarded the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts. King's grandfather was a Baptist preacher. His father was pastor of Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church. King earned his own Bachelor of Divinity degree from Crozier Theological Seminary in 1951 and earned his Doctor of Philosophy from Boston University in 1955. While at seminary King became acquainted with Mohandas Gandhi 's philosophy of nonviolent social protest. On a trip to India in 1959 King met with followers of Gandhi. During these discussions he became more convinced than ever that nonviolent resistance was the most potent weapon available to oppressed people in their struggle for freedom. As a pastor of a Baptist church in Montgomery, Alabama, King lead a Black bus boycott. He and ninety others were arrested and indicted under the provisions of a law making it illegal to conspire to obstruct the operation of a business. King and several others were found guilty, but appealed their case. As the bus boycott dragged on, King was gaining a national reputation. The ultimate sucess of the Montgomery bus boycott made King a national hero.

About the Author
Martin Luther (1483-1546), an Augustinian priest, biblical scholar, and linguist, was born and died in Eisleben, Saxony, a duchy in northwestern Germany. His attack on ecclesiastical abuses, the Ninety-five Theses, signaled the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. Luther's father wanted him to be a lawyer and sent him to the University of Erfut, where he received a B.A. degree in 1502 and an M.A. in 1505. Luther joined the Augustinian order in 1506 and was ordained a priest a year later. Like other German Augustinians of this era, Luther sought a stricter observance of the rules of the order and this was reflected in his teaching and writing. Luther taught at the new University of Wittenberg from 1508 to 1546 and received a doctorate of theology in 1512.

RUN OF PAPER The House voted 386-16 yesterday to place a memorial to slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the Capitol. The resolution, sent to the Senate, authorizes the Joint Committee on the Library to obtain a bust or statue of King at a cost of not more than $25,000. It would be the first such memorial in the Capitol honoring a black American. The proposal by Rep. Jonathan Bingham (D-N.Y.), was opposed by Reps. Larry McDonald (D-Ga.), and John Ashbrook (R-Ohio), during debate Monday, when they noted that most government records on King have been sealed. Bingham and McDonald said King had encouraged violence during the civil rights struggle and had, on occasion, broken the law. But Rep. John Seiberling (D-Ohio), countered that to accuse King of provoking violence "is like accusing King of being guilty of violence because he was assassinated by James Earl Ray." "Surely logic has been turned upside down," he said.
