ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) With marches, with speeches and with President Clinton participating as thousands of others did in community service projects, the nation observed the federal holiday honoring Martin Luther King Jr. on what would have been the slain civil rights leader's 72nd birthday. Clinton helped AmeriCorps workers paint a senior center in Washington on Monday. He followed the painting project with a speech at the University of the District of Columbia, where he called for unity. "If I could leave America with one wish as I depart office, it would be that we become more the 'one America' that we know we ought to be," Clinton said.

Disputation of Doctor Martin Luther on the Power and Efficacy of Indulgences
by Dr. Martin Luther, 1517 These Theses resulted in the excommunication of Martin Luther, and the ideas contained in this document gave impetus to the Reformation. Out of love for the truth and the desire to bring it to light, the following propositions will be discussed at Wittenberg, under the presidency of the Reverend Father Martin Luther, Master of Arts and of Sacred Theology, and Lecturer in Ordinary on the same at that place. Wherefore he requests that those who are unable to be present and debate orally with us, may do so by letter. In the Name our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
  • Our Lord and Master Jesus Christ, when He said Poenitentiam agite, willed that the whole life of believers should be repentance. This word cannot be understood to mean sacramental penance, i.e., confession and satisfaction, which is administered by the priests. Yet it means not inward repentance only; nay, there is no inward repentance which does not outwardly work divers mortifications of the flesh. The penalty [of sin], therefore, continues so long as hatred of self continues; for this is the true inward repentance, and continues until our entrance into the kingdom of heaven.

luther, martin (14831546). martin luther, the originator of the Protestant Reformation, might be described as an impressionable man.

Back to Home Page or Contents Page or People or Index Luther, Martin M sola fides , faith alone, which brought one to salvation. Luther, like Augustine before him, experienced religious torment. When in the monastery he was plagued by the feeling of the wrath of God. This continued over years, as a monk he did everything he knew how to overcome this terror, neither daily confession nor ascetic exercises helped. Luther, the monk, cried out to God for relief because he felt God was putting demands upon him that no human could fulfill. He suffered infernal terrors, after which his bones felt as if they had been burned to ashes. As he described it in these moments of dread he saw not the slightest gleam of light. One might think his religious struggle had brought Luther to a verge of madness. But, such a conclusion would have vanished the meaning of an important event in his life. This event was a religious or mystical experience in Luther's life, which took the form of an illumination. It occurred in the tower room of the monastery when he was reading the first chapter of the Epistle to the Romans. While reading Luther suddenly saw that Paul was describing a merciful justice, and not a punitive one, which is conferred upon men through Christ and which in no way can be separated from the Redeemer. Because of this revelation Luther was like a man for whom paradise had been reopened. With the selfsame intensity with which he has previously hated God, he now drank in the exceedingly sweet pledge. It was not that Luther found God, but rather God found him. From then on he was oriented more toward the Pauline epistles than toward the Gospel.

    Luther, Martin (1483-1546)
Although many religious reforms in Europe preceded those of Martin Luther, he is considered to be the initiator of the Protestant Reformation . In the year 1517, outraged by the sale of indulgences by the Catholic Church (see Reformation), Luther, posted on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenburg, Germany, his now-famous 95 theses. In the theses, Luther railed against the Catholic Church and what he saw as its excesses and hypocrisies, clearly exemplified in its selling of indulgences to the common masses. Prior to his Reformation activities, Luther, a German, was a student of philosophy at the University of Erfurt, where he received his Bachelor's degree (1503), and then two years later, his Master's degree. Though his father wished him to study law, Luther's unsettled soul and the sudden death of a close friend caused him to enter an Augustinian cloister in 1505. As a monk, Luther began a more thorough study of the Bible and theology, particularly Augustine and the Christian mystics. In 1507, he was ordained a priest. In 1508, Luther was appointed professor of philosophy at the newly-established University of Wittenburg. After becoming disillusioned with the philosophy of the time, Luther made preparations to attain higher degrees in theology. In 1509, he received his Bachelor's degree, and in 1512 the Doctor of Theology degree. Following this, Luther began to lecture on the Bible and preach against what he saw as the corruptions of the papacy. When Luther encountered Johann Tetzel, a Dominican commissioned in 1502 by the pope to preach and sell indulgences in Germany and the Scandinavian kingdoms, he resolved to counter not only the sale of indulgences, but also the entire theological and economic systems of the Catholic Church.

Full text of a speech Judge Joe Brown made regarding the martin luther King case on April 3, 1998.

    From the July-August 1998 issue (Vol. 5 No. 5)
Judge Brown Slams Memphis Over the King Case
    As recorded by Dick Russell
James Earl Ray, even in the event that the rifle [had] been excluded, might have still been found legally guilty of being an accessory, an aider and abettor, or a conspirator. I won’t touch upon that. But I do know what I saw in terms of the hard evidence, in terms of what’s in that file relative to those things that the untrained might never notice. I would remark initially upon the category of so-called "experts" that everyone has been relying upon in this case. The level of expertise, if they had any such, was extremely low. They had long histories of being able to look at bullets under a microscope and using relatively primitive technology to make an analysis subjectively as to whether in their opinion such-and-such a bullet matched a sample that they were attempting to compare it with. That was the extent of their expertise. They had very little knowledge—if any—about rifles and firearms in general. Now Preston Battle, the honorable late initial judge who handled this case, said this on the record. He was firmly convinced that if James Earl Ray in fact did the killing, he did not act alone. Now James Earl Ray in the record is said to have gone to a gunshop and purchased a .243 caliber weapon. It says he was told by others that this was not a suitable weapon for the purpose. "Others", o-t-h-e-r-s, I’m assuming that means the same to everyone else that it does to me. He returned the .243 to exchange it for a 30.06. Whereupon he had a scope mounted on the weapon in the gunshop.
