Alvin Lucier Alvin Lucier (born May 14 ) is a composer of music and sound installations exploring acoustic phenomena, especially resonance , as well as a former member of the Sonic Arts Union along with Robert Ashley David Behrman , and Gordon Mumma Lucier was born in Nashua, New Hampshire and studied at Yale and Brandeis University and spent two years in Rome on a Fulbright Fellowship Some of his pieces include Music On A Long Thin Wire in which all music is produced by one amplified string and a magnet, Crossings , in which tones played across a steadily rising sine wave produce interference beats Still and Moving Lines of Silence in Families of Hyperbolas in which the interference tones between sine waves create "troughs" and "valleys" of sound and silence, and Music For Solo Performer , the first piece to use brain waves to produce sound. One of Lucier's best known works is I am sitting in a room , in which Lucier records himself narrating a text, and then plays the recording back into the room, re-recording it. The new recording is then played back and re-recorded, and this process is repeated. Since all rooms have a characteristic resonance (eg. different between a large hall and a small room), the effect is that certain frequencies are emphasised as they resonate in the room, until eventually the words become unintelligible, replaced by the pure resonant harmonies and tones of the room itself. Home CDs im Vertrieb I am sitting in a room I am sitting in a room (1970) for voice on tape Alvin Lucier, recorded voice In this fascinating exploration of acoustical phenomena, Alvin Lucier slips from the domain of language to that of music in the course of 40 minutes and 32 repetitions of a simple paragraph of text. In I am sitting in a room , several sentences of recorded speech are simultaneously played back into a room and re-recorded there many times. As the repetitive process continues, those sounds common to the original spoken statement and those implied by the structural dimensions of the room are reinforced. The others are gradually eliminated. The space acts as a filter; the speech is transformed into pure sound. All the recorded segments are spliced together in the order in which they were made and constitute the work. I am sitting in a room was composed in 1970 and was first performed at the Guggenheim Museum in New York City that same year. A second version was made in 1972 to accompany the dance, Dune , performed by the Viola Farber Dance Company at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Since that time, numerous versions of this composition have been realized in various ways by other musicians, including a Swedish radio broadcast version.

With loudspeakers driving shallow pools of water, light is directed onto complex wave patterns to create shifting visual images on the walls of the darkened gallery. Following Lucier's open-ended score that calls for "making visible the effects of sound," a natural, ever-changing correspondence between sound, water, and light is observed. Alvin Lucier has pioneered in many areas of music composition and performance, including the notation of performers' physical gestures, the use of brain waves in live performance, the generation of visual imagery by vibrating media, and the evocation of room acoustics for musical purposes. His recent works include a series of sound installations and works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra in which, by means of close tuning with pure tones, sound waves are caused to spin through space. Born in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1931, he studied at Yale and Brandeis and spent two years in Rome on a Fulbright scholarship. He has performed and lectured extensively in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Several of his works are available on Cramps (Italy), Source, Mainstream, CBS Odyssey, Nonesuch, and Lovely Music Records. Since 1970 he has taught at Wesleyan University where he is John Spencer Camp Professor of Music.

Waggish Main The Anathemata September 06, 2003 "I Am Sitting in a Room", Alvin Lucier I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice and I am going to play it back into the room again and again until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves so that any semblance of my speech, with perhaps the exception of r-r-r-rhythm, is destroyed. What you will hear, then, are the natural resonant frequencies of the room articulated by speech. I regard this activity nnnnnot so much as a demonstration of a physical fact, but more as a way to s-s-smooth out any irregularities my speech might have. This is the text of Alvin Lucier's "I Am Sitting in a Room," and it describes what he does over the forty minutes of the piece. The piece is described by Christopher Burns as "conceptually rich, sonically beautiful, and...achieved with an extraordinary economy of means." Beyond the pure sonics, it's the elegance that's most impressive. The "score" is more of an explanation; the basic score is contained in the text itself.
