Alvin Lucier has been a pioneer in many areas of composition and performance, including the use of brain waves in live performance (Music for Solo Performer), the generation of visual imagery by sound in vibrating media (The Queen of the South), and the evocation of room acoustics for musical purposes (I am Sitting in a Room). His recent works include a series of sound installations and works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra in which, by means of close tunings with pure tones, sound waves are caused to spin in space. Among these recent works are Small Waves, for trombone, piano, and string quartet with six amplified glass vases; Wave Painting Songs, for soprano and pure wave oscillators; and for five players with Lexicon Acoustic Reverberation System. A new large-scale work for three orchestras, written for the S.E.M. Ensemble, will be performed in May, 1999, in Prague. His works have been performed around the world, and he is represented on over three dozen recordings. In March, 1995, MusikTexte published a bilingual edition of his scores, interviews, and writings, Reflections/Reflexionen.

His recent works include a series of sound installations and works for solo instruments, chamber ensembles, and orchestra in which - by means of close tunings with pure tones - sound waves are caused to spin through space.
  • The works on this CD belong to Lucier's unique sound world and sense of exploration. Both works were written for the performers on this disc, including the renowned Arditti String Quartet.
Navigations for Strings (1991) was commissioned by the Hessischer Rundfunk (German Radio). Musically it consists of 4 tones, for which a long stream of continually changing melodic and instrumental combinations occur. As the players move through the combinations, they raise and lower the pitches in imperceptibly small increments, some smaller than the human ear can hear. As the size of the interval contracts, the players gradually lower the dynamic level and slow down the tempo, allowing the sounds to lengthen like shadows and recede into the ambiance of the room. Because of the closeness of the tunings, audible beats are heard at speeds determined by the distances between the pitches.

Alvin Lucier NBA. You are considered one of the seminal figures in Sound Art. Since the 1960s your work has challenged the fundamental ideas of what musical composition is and what music does. Do you draw a distinction between Sound Art and musical composition? Is there more than a semantic shift in these terms for you? AL. Arthur Berger, in his recent book, Reflections of an American Composer , states that Sound Art "...is not new in the sense of being a new stage in a long tradition, like serialism, for instance, but is new in the sense of being altogether a new art, based on sound but not specifically pitch, which is only one kind of sound." He goes on to reminisce, in a different part of the book, that while on Fulbright in the early Sixties my composition teacher Boris Porena led me to more and more dissonant music (I had been writing in the neoclassical style up to that time) until "...the experience makes one suspect that perhaps Lucier continued the process on his own until he finally arrived at the non-music genre that is sometimes called Sound Art." Berger was only partially right. I came upon "Sound Art" naturally, as I developed an intense interest in the natural characteristics of sound waves. I lost my appetite for appropriating, extending or transforming previous or contemporaneous musical languages for my own purposes. In my

Music for a Solo Performer
In a performance of Music for Solo Performer , composed by Alvin Lucier in 1965, Lucier attaches electrodes to his head to detect his alpha brain waves. His alpha brain waves are then transmitted by amplifiers to loudspeakers that are used to resonate percussion instruments placed around a concert hall.
Lucier wrote: "I realized the value of the EEG situation as a theater element ... I was also touched by the image of the immobile if not paralyzed human being who, by merely changing states of visual attention, can activate ... a large battery of percussion instruments including cymbals, gongs, bass drums, timpani, and other ..."

Seminal composer, electronic musician, and conceptual artist Alvin Lucier works with Sospeso this season to bring to life an ongoing sound installation at New York's downtown venue Engine 27. For this project, Lucier revisits his classic work of generation and deterioration, I Am Sitting in a Room . Lucier recorded forty different acoustical spaces in Eastern Europe, from mine shafts to cathedrals: Sospeso's Instrumental sounds will be projected into these virtual acoustical spaces. The installation will be open to the public for the duration of its exhibition. This project is supported through a generous grant from Meet the Composer
