November 1719 in Augsburg als Sohn eines einfachen Buchbinders geboren. Wie es die Zeit der Aufklärung verlangte, erwirbt er sich aber zugleich eine vielseitige Bildung, indem er einige Zeit die philosophische Fakultät der Salzburger Universität besucht und dort ein Jus- und Philosophiestudium beginnt, das er jedoch wieder abbricht. Im Jahre 1743 tritt er als 4. Violinist in die erzbischöfliche Hofkapelle ein, wo er sich bis zum Hofkapellmeister (1757) und schließlich zum Vizekapellmeister (1763) hinaufarbeitet. Oggigiorno, il numero dei partecipanti ai concorsi è nettamente diminuito, e del resto non c'è niente da stupirsi: esso è tentato solo da giovani, soprattutto del profondo Sud, che i concorsi li tentano tutti sperando di non morire disoccupati, non immaginando di dover fare i conti con una realtà "antropologicamente diversa" come ha detto Silvio Berlusconi, e, quanto ai pochi che tentano quel concorso con una vocazione, si tratta ormai quasi solo di carrieristi figli di altri magistrati, di personaggi che bramano apertamente il potere per il potere, quando non di giovani rampanti che il regime rosso - duro a morire nonostante da due anni e mezzo governi Berlusconi - prepara appositamente per infoltire le schiere delle toghe rosse. GIUSEPPE TARTINI (1692-1770) Violin Concertos Excerpts from the sleeve notes To his contemporaries, Tartini was a figure of major importance. That his work as violinist, composer and teacher was enthusiastically admired and worthy of emulation is evident from the writings of Quantz, Leopold Mozart and Dr Charles Burney, and from the number of violinists who journeyed to Padua to study with him. His writings on musical theory had a more mixed response, but his acoustical and philosophical speculations were widely discussed as matters of importance. In a somewhat shadowy way, his fame has persisted through the nineteenth and twentieth centuries; students of the history of violin playing have been aware of the letter, often reprinted, to Maddalena Lombardini on the fundamental principles of violin playing, and, above all, the well known story of the origin of his ‘Devil’s Trill’ Sonata has kept his name alive. I dreamed that I had made a compact with his Satanic Majesty, by which he was received into my service. Everything succeeded to the utmost of my desire, and my every wish was anticipated by this my new domestic. I thought that on taking up my Violin to practise, I jocosely asked him if he could play on the instrument. He answered that he believed he was able to pick out a tune; and then, to my astonishment, began to play a sonata, so strange and so beautiful, and executed in so masterly a manner, that I had never in my life heard anything so exquisite. So great was my amazement that I could scarcely breathe. Awakened by the violent emotion, I instantly seized my Violin, in the hope of being able to catch some part of the ravishing melody which I had just heard, but all in vain.
