Icelandic director Hilmar Oddsson (b. 1957) studied at the Hochschule fur Fernsehen und Film in Munich. Before he made Tears of Stone, he directed one full-length feature film, and several short documentaries. He also works with television, making commercials and videoclips.
Your film is based on the life of a specific music composer. What preparations did you make for the film?
- The idea was very old. I wanted to make a documentary film about the Icelandic composer Jon Leifs who was born in 1899. He lived for a while in Germany and then came to Iceland where he was totally rejected by the Icelandic nation. His works were not played because he was regarded as a very difficult personality.
When I was studying filmmaking in Munich a friend of mine came to me. He was just finishing his thesis on this man and he told me that if someone really wanted they could make the name Leifs important to the Icelanders. These were such absurd words, I thought, that I had to find out if they were true. So I called him nine years later and told him that we had work on that. At that time, it was in 1989, there was hardly any music published by this man. Now, in 1997 you can buy the music of Jon Leifs in most European countries. In 1989, we started to collect such materials as personal letters of his family, and diaries and to work on the script for the documentary.

The General Consul lives and works in Washington DC so the Vice Consul is supposed to service Icelanders in this area. Well, elections are coming up in Iceland on the 10 th of May and many of us would like to exercise our right to vote. The location of the office is in a far South suburb, which is a long commute for most of us and inaccessible by public transportation. Our plan was to vote on a Saturday so everyone interested could do so at the same time. That would save time for the Vice Consul and more people would vote, coming from the North and West suburbs. It looks like this is not going to happen. The Vice Counsel is ignoring us and does not return phone calls. So, if you would like to vote you have to take some time off and go during office hours. This is a back lag from the last elections - then he opened his office on a Saturday.

Zaterdag 24 augustus 2002 Om 9 uur 's ochtends stappen we met slaperige koppen in een excursiebus die ons naar de vulkaan Lakagígar zal brengen. Onder onze medeavonturiers ontdekken we een aantal Nederlanders die nu al een meerdere dagen op hetzelfde reisschema zitten als wij. Dezelfde taal, maar met andere wensen aan het ontbijt, want in de eetzaal vanmorgen was ik de enige niet-local die het aandurfde om de warme pap te proberen die naar Brinta rook. De pap smaakte overigens totaal anders (waarschijnlijk bestond het uit slechts één ingrediënt). Bovendien wordt IJslandse pap niet alleen met melk, maar ook met water bereid. Of zou dat alleen voor toeristen zo zijn?
De bustoer begint gemoedelijk met een vrolijke stem die vanaf een cassettebandje ons wetenswaardigheden toewauwelt, die van tijd tot tijd aangevuld worden met anekdotes van de chauffeur. In de bus zitten naast de bestuurder 10 Nederlanders, 2 IJslanders, 2 Israeliërs die het geweld in hun land ontvlucht zijn, en 2 Fransen, die de bus eerder verlaten om met loodzware rugzakken een wandeltocht van een paar dagen in het eenzame berggebied te maken.
Onderweg bezoeken we een prachtige kloof, de Fjarðrárglúfur, die ruw is uitgesleten door een lavarivier. Puntige rotsen die los staan van beide walkanten, steken fier omhoog tegenover een brede waterval. Het zal niet de enige waterval zijn die we vandaag aandoen, want de Fagrifoss staat ook nog op het programma. Op weg hier naartoe rijden we langs een typisch IJslandse boerderij, waarvan de stal op de begane grond gebouwd is en de woonvertrekken zich op de eerste verdieping bevinden, zodat de woonkamers verwarmd worden door de koeien. "Tegenwoordig", zo stelt onze chauffeur, "geven IJslanders in hun huis de voorkeur aan de geur van warme zwavelbronnen boven die van koeienmest".
