Jón Leifs was born in Sólheimar in northern Iceland on 1 May 1899, but moved to Reykjavík with his family a year later. As a teenager, he studied piano with local teachers, and performed music by Grieg and Beethoven in public recitals. The mediocre state of Icelandic art music in the early years of the twentieth century can hardly have been encouraging, but Leifs still found himself compelled to become a musician. Denne kompositör som i livstiden var en av de mest kontroversiella gestalterna i det isländska samhället ses nu som en av den skandinaviska 1900-talsmusikens giganter. En ny lyssnargeneration har tagit till sig det ytligt sett råa och primitiva i många av hans verk, däribland "Hekla", den massivt högljudda återgivningen av ett vulkanutbrott i musik till vars CD-version för tre år sedan det faktiskt medföljde ett par öronproppar. Åhlén känner Leifs’ musik väl – den har fascinerat honom alltsedan Helsingforspremiären på "Hekla" år 1964, och hans artikel om tonsättaren i tidskriften "Tonfallet" för över tio år sedan var en milstolpe i Leifsforskningen. För sitt nya magnum opus har Åhlén inte bara gått igenom Leifs’ enorma samling av brev och manuskript (han var känd för att aldrig kasta bort något som han trodde kunde vara av intresse för senare generationer), utan också samlat mängder av material i svenska och tyska bibliotek. Crossing the Stone Composer/arranger Karl Jenkins - the man behind the international hits "Adiemus" and "Palladio" (known in the U.S as "Diamond Music") - has created original works and imaginative new arrangements of classical, pop and folk favorites for the new recording. Finch's career as a classical harpist was already hitting its stride when, at the age of 20, she was tapped for a Royal Appointment as harpist to HRH The Prince of Wales, a position last granted in 1871 and revived by Prince Charles in the year 2000. One of the products of the appointment was the Prince's commissioning of a double harp concerto for Finch by Karl Jenkins. The concerto, entitled Over the Stone, uses the Welsh folk song "Tros y garreg," which translates as "Crossing the Stone." The new recording features the fourth movement of the concerto, which Finch premiered in 2002 with her longtime teacher, mentor and future mother-in-law Elinor Bennet as the other soloist. The eclectic mix of pieces on Crossing the Stone ranges from Dave Grusin's sprightly "Mountain Dance," Pat Metheny's "James" and Chick Corea's "Spain" to the Bach/Gounod "Ave Maria" - in an ethereal treatment that features countertenor Terrance Barber - Astor Piazzolla's tango "Buenos Aires Hora Cero," the third movement from Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint, the gentle Welsh lullaby "Suo Gân," and a highly original arrangement of "Claire de lune" by Finch's favorite composer, Claude Debussy.
