Lassus wrote a considerable quantity of church music, including over seventy settings of the Mass, settings of the Passions from the four evangelists and a very large number of motets. From this very considerable body of work of the highest quality selection is invidious, although mention may be made of the Requiem for four voices, the Missa octavi toni and Missa Qual donna, and motets such as Tristis est anima mea and the setting of the seven penitential Psalms of David and of the Holy Week Lamentations.

Lasso, Orlando di, or Lassus, Roland de
Flemish composer, one of the greatest and most versatile composers of the late Renaissance, equally adept in the polyphonic style that dominated European church music of the time and in the newer secular styles developing in Germany, France, and Italy. Lasso published his music extensively during his lifetime (a mark of his stature in that first century of printing) and left more than 2000 compositions.
Lasso was born in Mons (now in Belgium). A professional choirboy as a child, he was kidnapped three times because of his beautiful voice. At the age of 12, he entered the musical establishment of the viceroy of Sicily. He stayed in Italy about ten years, working in Milan, Naples, and Rome, before returning north to Antwerp in 1554. From 1556 he was employed in Munich by Albert V (1528-79), duke of Bavaria, who ennobled him in 1570.
Lasso's Latin sacred music comprises masses and motets. His motets, in particular, include many of his finest works and reveal a wide range of mood and sensitive treatment of text. Among the best known are the 7 Penitential Psalms (c. 1560; pub. 1584) and the 12 Prophetiae Sibyllarum (Prophecies of the Sibyl, 1560; pub. posthumously 1600). His secular music includes chansons (French part-songs), of which "Susanne un jour" (Susanna One Morn, after the Book of Daniel) was internationally popular for decades; lieder (German part-songs) on secular and religious texts; and works in the Italian genre in which he excelled-the madrigal. His last work, Lagrime di San Pietro (Tears of Saint Peter, 1594), was a collection of madrigals with religious texts.

Lassus [Lasso], Orlande [Roland] de [Orlando di] ( b Mons, 1530 or 1532 - d Munich, 14 June, 1594)
Lassus served Ferrante Gonzaga of Mantua from c1544, accompanying him to Sicily and Milan (1546-9). He worked for Contantino Castrioto in Naples, where he probably began to compose, and then moved to Rome to join the Archbishop of Florence's household becoming maestro di cappella of St John's Lateran in 1553. He returned north to Antwerp and Mons where early works were published (1555/6), and he joined the court chapel of Duke Albrecht V of Bavaria in Munich as a singer in 1556. He married in 1558. Although he was a Catholic, he took over the court chapel in 1563, and severed the duke and his heir, Wilhelm V, for over 30 years until his death. In this post he consolidated his position be having many works published and travelling frequently, establishing himself an international reputation. The pope made him a Knight of the Golden Spur in 1574.
Lassus wrote over 200 works in almost every genre including masses, motets, hymns, responsorial Passions, and secular pieces in Italian, French and German. Most of his masses are parody masses based on motets, songs, or madrigals by himself or others. His motets include didactic pieces, ceremonial works for special occasions, settings of classical texts, liturgical items, and private devotional pieces. He issued five large volumes of sacred music as Patrocinium musices between 1573 and 1576, and after his death his sons assembled another, Magnus opus musicum in 1604.

    Among the many monographs which Sherlock Holmes is known to have written, On the Polyphonic Motets of Lassus must surely be among the most famous. However, it has often been remarked (about every time the monograph is discussed) that 'polyphonic motet' is a solecism, since motets are, by definition, polyphonic. Accounting for this lapse has always been something of a problem, at least one commentator suggesting that the true subject was the mysteries surrounding Lassus's life, others suggesting that Watson's understanding of music was somewhat deficient, and one going so far as to suggest that the monograph was never published! A more intriguing possibility has recently suggested itself, based on Watson's character, Holmes' interests, and Lassus' actual music. From a review of a recently released recording of a sampling of Lassus' music: While it was his masterly sacred music that made Orlando de Lassus the last and greatest exponent of the Flemish contrapuntal school, it is his delightfully risqué secular music that keeps his name alive. From the famous, uproarious "Matona mia cara" a parody of a German trying to sing an Italian serenade with many embarrassing mispronunciations to the zany "Zanui-piasi, patro?", a heated exchange between a master and his drunken servant, Lassus was a virtuoso of the salacious wink and sexually charged innuendo: nether as vulgar nor overt as Janequin . . . but every bit as funny.

    Musikernes fyrste
    Hvem er den største af alle komponister? Formodentlig kan spørgsmålet ikke besvares; men nogle har alligevel forsøgt sig. Når svaret er blevet hentet i den klassiske europæiske musiks verden, har det som oftest handlet om Bach, Mozart eller Beethoven. Hvis jeg selv skulle give et bud, ville det blive en komponist, som kun de færreste nok kender. Og min største vanskelighed ville måske være at bestemme mig for, hvilket navn jeg skulle kalde ham ved. Der er nemlig mange at vælge imellem, hvilket også gør ham til lidt af et mareridt at eftersøge på Internet. Jeg har valgt at se bort fra de forskellige varianter af fornavnet og at bruge efternavnet i den samme variant, som jeg bruger til domænenavn: Lassus.
    En fyrstelig musiker
    I sin egen tid (1532-94) var Lassus uden sammenlgning Europas kendteste og højest respekterede komponist. Et af hans tilnavne var "musikernes fyrste". Det meste af sit liv var han ansat hos hertugen af Bayern og han fik tildelt høje udmærkelser af både paven, den tyske kejser og den franske konge, så han var altså i høj grad også fyrsternes musiker. Han var også den komponist, der fik i særklasse flest noder trykt, dels på grund af hans overvældende produktivitet og dels på grund af hans berømmelse.

    Meditation over Lassus
    Orlandus Lassus ... Orlande de Lassus... Roland de Lassus.. Orlando di Lasso... Dette er bare nogle af de navne, som er blevet heftet på denne meget store komponist. Og udover forvirringen om navnene er hans fødselstidspunkt også svært at bestemme. Fødselsdatoen er ukendt, og mht. årstallet vakler forskerne stadig mellem 1530 og 1532. Derimod ved de, hvornår han døde: 14/6/1594, så 14. juni må siges at være en passende dato at meditere over ham. (Dette forhold skal selvfølgelig ikke forhindre dig i at meditere over ham, lige når det passer dig.) Lassus er nok stort set kun kendt blandt folk med interesse for enten ældre musik (musik før barokken) eller lidt mere avanceret kormusik. Men han bør være et interessant emne for enhver, der sætter pris på musik af høj kvalitet, og som ikke har låst sig selv inde i nogle meget snævre genremæssige afgrænsninger. Hans musik er også velegnet som meditationsmusik.
    • Den er meget smuk og velafbalanceret. Den er rytmisk levende. Den udtrykker et meget varieret register af følelser.
    Men der er andet end musikkens kvalitet, der kan gøre Lassus til et interessant emne for en meditation:
