Col. David Lang Col. David Lang was the Commander of the 8th Florida Infantry Regiment. Due to the illness of Florida Brigade commander Brig. Gen. E. A. Perry with typhoid fever, Lang commanded the Florida Brigade during the Battle of Gettysburg. Born in Camden County, Georgia, Lang had graduated from the Georgia Military Institute in 1857. He had initially enlisted in the 1st Florida Infantry as a private. As a sergeant in 1862, Lang raised Company C of the 8th Florida Infantry and was elected its captain. He became colonel of the 8th on 30 April 1863. At Gettysburg, the Florida Brigade spent the first day (1 July 1863) getting to the site of the battle. On the second day of the battle, the Florida Brigade which at that time had an approximate strength of 750 men sustained 300 (40%) casualties while assaulting Union positions on Cemetery Ridge. On 3 July 1863 the Florida Brigade accompanied Wilcox's Brigade in a second assault of Cemetery Ridge behind and in support of Pickett's assault. The Florida Brigade sustained an additional 20% casualties, bringing its total losses in the Battle of Gettysburg to 450 men (60%). During the course of the Battle of Gettysburg, all of the regiments of the brigade except the 5th Florida Infantry lost their colors... and the 5th Florida's colors were saved on 3 July only by a soldier's expedient of removing them from the staff and stuffing them inside of his shirt. Co-founder of New York's legendary new music festival, Bang on a Can, Lang's distinct sound fuses the tradition of classical music with urban aggressivess, where melodies accompanied by noise and subtle harmonies are pulled apart by pounding rhythms. Lang was born in Los Angeles in 1957 and holds degrees from Stanford University and the University of Iowa, receiving his doctorate from the Yale School of Music in 1989. Lang has been commissioned by such organizations as the Santa Fe Opera, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the San Francisco Symphony, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the BBC Singers, and the American Composers Orchestra. His works are performed with regularity throughout the world by such organizations as the Kronos Quartet, the New York Philharmonic, Icebreaker, Piano Circus and the Netherlands Wind Ensemble: at the Almeida, Holland, Berlin, Tanglewood and Aspen Music Festivals; in theater productions In New York, San Francisco and London, and In the choreography of Twyla Tharp, Susan Marshall, La La La Human Steps and The Alvin Alley Company. Now You See Him, Now You Don't The Strange Case of David Lang by Merlyn Return Home September 23, 1880 was a warm sunny day, in Summer County Tennessee. The afternoon had become quite pleasant and the Lang Family had moved out of doors to enjoy the weather. Mrs. Emma Lang stood with her multi-task maid, servant, cook and nanny and watched the children playing in the front yard. The children, George and Sarah, were cavorting about as children would do and Mr. Lang was across the road working in the fields. A buggy was seen coming from the direction of the town of Gallatin and as it drew closer Mrs. Lang recognized the occupants. Judge August Peck and his brother in law (who's name I forget at the moment), were close friends of the Lang family. They had made the short journey to the Lang farm to spend a quiet evening of conversation and companionship. Hearing the buggy approach, David Lang turned from his work and waved at the Judge and his brother in law. And dusting himself off he began to walk towards the farmhouse. He had only taken several steps when he suddenly vanished into thin air.

He studied graphic design at George Brown College and, upon leaving, pursued a career in graphic design. He has produced work for some of the leading design and book publishing firms, including Penguin Books and Viking Press. In 1987, spurred by the success of a number of shows, David decided to leave the security of the design world to paint full time. A decision that has only accelerated his development as an artist. David has traveled extensively. He has lived in Mexico, and has done research for his paintings in Southwest Africa, England, Guatemala and Korea. In Canada, he has witnessed the gathering of bald eagles in the Queen Charlotte Islands of British Columbia and the tranquil villages shrouded in mist on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. He has also ventured into the far north discovering the flora and fauna of Baffin Island in the springtime. His extensive journeys have led to a rich and diverse array of paintings which now hang in private and corporate collections in Bermuda, Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Australia, Hong Kong, Japan and Korea. He has exhibited with the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum's 'Birds in Art' International Exhibition where his work was selected from a thousand international submissions. And, in early 1997, he was accepted into the prestigious National Park Academy of the Arts' annual 'Art for the Parks' (1997) Juried Exhibition in the United States where his work was selected to join the 'Group of 100' for the Academy's traveling exhibition. Bibliography The Legend: On the afternoon of September 23, 1880, on a farm just a few miles outside of Gallatin, Tennessee, a remarkable event was witnessed by five people. The farm was occupied by farmer David Lang and his family his wife, Emma, his two children, eight-year-old George and eleven-year-old Sarah, and their household servants. On that afternoon, the children were playing in the front yard, when Mr. and Mrs. Lang came out of their house and Mr.Lang started across the pasture toward his quarter horses. As Lang was crossing the pasture, the horse and buggy of the family's friend, Judge August Peck, came into view on the lane in front of the house; the children stopped playing, as Peck always brought them presents when he visited. Both Mr. and Mrs. Lang saw the buggy, and Mr. Lang waved to the judge as he turned to walk back towards the house. A moment later David Lang completely disappeared in mid-step. Fully witnessed by his two children, his wife, Judge August Peck, and the Judge's traveling companion (the Judge's brother-in-law), David Lang had just suddenly ceased to exist; understandably, Mrs. Lang screamed. All five witnesses ran to the spot they had last seen David, but there was nothing to hide behind or under; the field contained just grass. The adults quickly searched the field to no effect. By this time, Mrs. Lang was becoming hysterical, and was taken back into the house as neighbors were called with an alarm bell. By nightfall, all the neighbors were involved in the search, and, by lantern, they checked every foot of the field, stamping their feet to try to detect any holes that David might have fallen into. Nothing was found.

That the FATE story is the original source of both Wilkins' and Edwards' versions of the David Lang mystery, there can be no doubt . But there appears to have been some form of outside editing done even before either of these two authors penned their versions. Both authors' versions have details that agree and disagree with each other and the FATE account. For instance, the FATE account describes the grass circle as tall and yellow with a fifteen foot diameter... Edwards says it was short and yellow, but agrees with the diameter, while Wilkins says it was a twenty foot diameter, but agrees it was tall and yellow. In other places, Wilkins and Edwards both seem to be adding details with a distinctly similar pattern: the FATE article gives no date whatsoever for the children's visit to the circle, but both Wilkins and Edwards do... Wilkins stating it as August 1881, and Edwards calling it April 1881. Stranger still, both accounts omit the section of the story dealing with Spiritualism, as previously noted. My initial assumption as I first ran across their two accounts was that either Edwards copied Wilkins, or Wilkins copied Edwards; but the nature of the differences are confusing. At this point, I'm assuming one of two things happened: either one
