Geschichte
Jahrhundert. Der nächste Wettbewerb wird von 23. Sept. - 1. Okt. 2005 stattfinden.

    History
This most important Austrian violin competition carries on the tradition established by Fritz Kreisler in the years before 1938 of personally awarding a prize each year to the best violinist of the Wiener Musikakademie. The International Fritz Kreisler competition for young violinists of all nations first took place in 1979. Since then the competition has been dedicated to the memory of Fritz Kreisler, the most important Austrian violinist of the 20th century. Fritz Kreisler (Vienna 1875 - 1962 New York) graduated from the Vienna music conservatory as a student of Hellmesberger and Bruckner. His carreer included splendid success on all continents and made him the darling of concert audiences for decades. He personified the Viennese musician all over the world through the magic and charm of his melodies. Music history honours him as both the last important violinist/composer of the romantic period and as an outstanding pioneer of violin playing in the 20th century. The next competition will take place from 23. 9. - 1. 10. 2005.

    FOUR WEEKS IN THE TRENCHES
    by Fritz Kreisler
Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin Company
page 1 I In trying to recall my impressions during my short war duty as an officer in the Austrian Army, I find that my recollections of this period are very uneven and confused. Some of the experiences standout with absolute clearness; others, however, are blurred. Two or three events which took place in different localities seem merged into one, while in other instances recollection of the chronological order of things is missing. This curious indifference of the memory to values of time and space may be due to the extraordinary physical and mental stress under which the impressions I am trying to chronicle were received. The same page 2 state of mind I find is rather characteristic of most people I have met who were in the war. It should not be forgotten, too, that the gigantic upheaval which changed the fundamental condition of life overnight and threatened the very existence of nations naturally dwarfed the individual into nothingness, and the existing interest in the common welfare left practically no room for personal considerations. Then again, at the front, the extreme uncertainty of the morrow tended to lessen the interest in the details of to-day; consequently I may have missed a great many interesting happenings alongside of me which I would have wanted to note under other circumstances. One gets into a strange psychological, almost hypnotic, state of mind while on the firing line which probably prevents the mind's eye from observing and noticing things in a normal way. This accounts, perhaps, for some

Excerpted from Strings Magazine, February/March 2000, No. 84 Considering Kreisler A New Book Explores the Master Musician’s Brilliance, Charm, and Devotion
by Tom Heimberg There is a new biography for the Kreisler fan on your list. Amy Biancolli ’s Fritz Kreisler: Love’s Sorrow, Love’s Joy (1998, Amadeus Press, 447 pp., $34.95) is a beautiful book, well-researched, well-thought-out, and compellingly well-written. It is a fine tribute and memorial to the great violinist whose musicianship and charm so entranced music lovers from the late 19th century through the first half of the 20th. In her preface, Biancolli gives two reasons for writing the book. "My first is the simplest and, I believe, the most persuasive," she tells us. "I wrote a new biography of Fritz Kreisler because I fear he is in danger of being forgotten." Forgotten? At first reading it seems unlikely, but Biancolli has a precise meaning in mind when she writes this. It is certainly true that Kreisler’s name is still known, and that his compositions are played by every violin student. But many of his distinctive musical and personal qualities may no longer be in the public’s awareness. He was a man of feeling and philosophy who believed that "art ought to be a priesthood, and every artist should be a priest."
