The person and work of Zoltan Kodaly Zoltan Kodály was a prominent Hungarian composer, educator, ethnomusicologist, linguist, author and philosopher. Along with Bartók and Ligeti, he is one of the three major figures in Hungarian music this century. Kodály's many compositions show a strong affinity with the folk traditions of his country and include ballad operas, orchestral works, chamber music, choral works, songs, folk song arrangements and music for children. Kodály was born on December 16, 1882 in Kecskemét, a small town in central Hungary. Much of his childhood was spent in the Hungarian villages. It was here that Kodály developed a great love for the Hungarian countryside and for the folk traditions of his culture. From a young age Kodály showed great aptitude and interest in music. His father, an amateur musician, encouraged this interest, particularly the young boy's interest in composition. By the time Kodály reached secondary school he was composing his own music. After completing his school education, Kodály studied at The Franz List Academy (Hungary's most prestigious music institution) and the University of Hungary where he earned a degree in Hungarian, German and then, later, a Doctor of Philosophy in linguistics.

The topics record Denise Bacon's attempt to make an American adaptation of Kodály music education philosophy and techniques as they changed and developed, following the 1956 Hungarian revolution. The distinction between this and pre-existing Kodály adaptations in the U.S. is frequently blurred, and Denise Bacon is often credited with being the first to bring Kodály's concept to the U.S. This is only partially true. What can be said of her work is that most (not all) of the current Kodály programs nationwide stem from the establishment of KMTI and KCA. Under her direction, these two institutions existed as independent entities and established a standard of musicianship training that is almost impossible to maintain or replicate in today's society. Neither institution has been financially able to avail itself of the advantages of modern technology, especially the internet and websites. Both appeared to have dropped off the face of the earth. While KMTI lives on as the Kodály Institute at Capital University, KCA continued independently as a resource center, offering only short early childhood and advanced refresher courses.
