Audiogram - June, 1997
The Lark Quartet with Aaron Jay Kernis
by Molly Sheridan
On a date to be announced in Winter Quarter 1998, the Lark Quartet, the university's string quartet in residence, will perform Aaron Jay Kernis' String Quartet No.2:Music Instrumentalis. at the First United Methodist Church. As with Kernis' previous string quartet, this latest composition features a significant medieval influence. Kernis is one of the brightest stars among today's young American composers. His works are particularly noted for "using a diversity of styles, ideas, and impressions to create music of expressive lyricism and engaging wit." The quartet has expressed quite a bit of enthusiasm for this chance to perform Kernis' work. "He's a composer with real vision and originality and very much his own voice. He's very much in demand," noted Lark cellist Astrid Schween. Violinist Jennifer Orchard added, "We're privileged to work with him." Schween concluded by saying, "He's an unusually skilled composer. He really has command over whatever instrument he's writing for."

Aaron Jay Kernis
Aaron Jay Kernis, one of the youngest composers ever to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize, is among the most esteemed musical figures of his generation. His work might be inspired by the horrors of the Persian Gulf War (as in the much-talked about Symphony No. 2 ) the love poems of Anna Swir ( Love Scenes ), the earthy rhythms of salsa ( 100 Greatest Dance Hits ), the antics of a child ( Before Sleep and Dreams ), or the complexities and high-craftsmanship of Italian mosaics ( Invisible Mosaic III His music figures prominently on orchestral, chamber, and recital programs around the world. He has already written works for many of America foremost musical institutions; including New Era Dance , commissioned for the 150th Anniversary of the New York Philharmonic and recorded by the Baltimore Symphony; Still Movement with Hymn , a piano quartet commissioned by American Public Radio for Christopher O'Riley, Pamela Frank, Paul Neubauer, and Carter Brey;

November 16, 1999 The Lark Quartet plays Aaron Jay Kernis. String Quartet No. 1 ("musica celestis"); String Quartet No. 2 ("musica instrumentalis"). Performed by The Lark Quartet. (Arabesque Recordings, CD # Z6727) 1999. American composer Aaron Jay Kernis is something of a musical prodigy. Born in Philadelphia in 1960, Kernis was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music in 1998, one of the youngest composers ever to receive that award. After studying clarinet and violin, he taught himself piano and composition while in middle school, and at age fifteen he wrote his "first really big piece." He studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, and Yale School of Music, and had his first published orchestral work, Dream of the Morning Sky, premiered in 1983 by the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. Kernis draws inspiration for his work from many sources. He says that the String Quartet No. 2, the work for which he was awarded the Pulitzer, is "a piece very much influenced by dance and dance music," particularly baroque dance music. He says that he plays a bit of J.S. Bach's music every day on his piano, and the flavor of those works shows up in this quartet. Kernis' work, particularly his small-scale works such as these quartets, has been characterized as being marked by "engaging wit and expressive lyricism." Kernis has stated that among his objectives in his compositions are "to bring beauty back into music" and also to express an "exuberance and energy" in his work. He says that "there was a lot of fearsome music in this century" that created a barrier between contemporary composers and their audiences, and caused many listeners to retreat to the comfort of Mozart and Beethoven rather than struggle with the challenges of the new music. Kernis wants to break down that barrier and use his music to communicate with audiences, and in these two works he is largely successful.

Deeply Moving "Lament and Prayer" for WWII Victims
I like "Lament and Prayer" best in this CD. It is a very serious, beautiful piece, which is dedicated "in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII and Holocaust". Pamela Frank, whom this piece was commissioned for, is playing as if praying. The Minnesota Orchestra, especially strings, lead by David Zinman responded very well. In the final minutes, her violin and the orchestra finish in a calm, timeless melody. I was so moved when I actually listened to this piece, played by Pamela Frank, in a concert hall. Air for Violin is also beautiful and serene, but it is a simpler piece. Double Concerto for Violin and Guitar is an interesting piece. The jazz-like first and third movements contrast with the second movement, partly dissonant but richly melodious. Violin and guitar is a very intriguing combination. This Pulitzer prize-winning CD contains masterpieces by Aaron Jay Kernis (b. 1960).
A bit dull really The air for violin is incredibly good but the rest I found rather dull to be honest.
