Aaron Jay Kernis
Aaron Jay Kernis, one of the youngest composers ever to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize, has become among the most esteemed musical figures of his generation. Each work of Kernis bears the unmistakable stamp of a wildly fertile musical imagination and a distinctive voice forged out of the wide-ranging musical languages of the 1980s and 1990s. His music bursts with rich poetic imagery, brilliant instrumental color, distinctive musical wit, and infectious exuberance. His work is as likely to be inspired by the horrors of the Persian Gulf War (as in the much-talked about Symphony No. 2 ) as the love poems of Anna Swir ( Love Scenes ); the earthy rhythms of Salsa ( 100 Greatest Dance Hits ) as the antics of a child ( Before Sleep and Dreams ); the surrealism of Gertrude Stein ( Fragments of Gertrude Stein ) as the complexities and high-craftsmanship of Italian mosaics ( Invisible Mosaic III Kernis' music figures prominently on orchestral, chamber, and recital programs around the world. He has already written works for many of America's foremost musical institutions, including New Era Dance , commissioned for the 150th Anniversary of the New York Philharmonic and recorded by the Baltimore Symphony;

Aaron Jay Kernis
Composer-in-Residence
Aaron Jay Kernis, one of the nation's most gifted young composers, begins his third year as The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's composer-in-residence with two of his compositions receiving premieres on the SPCO's 1995-96 subscription season. Described as a composer of engaging wit and expressive lyricism, Kernis first became known to Twin Cities audiences under the leadership of SPCO Creative Chair John Adams in 1988, when the SPCO commissioned Kernis to compose a work for chamber orchestra. The 26-minute Symphony in Waves that emerged was performed in St. Paul and Chicago during the 1991-92 season to enthusiastic acclaim. In March 1994, Kernis' Still Movement with Hymn was premiered on Minnesota Public Radio's highly-acclaimed- weekly program, "Saint Paul Sunday Morning," and in November his humorous Le Quattro Stagioni Dalla Cucina Futurismo ("The Four Seasons of Futuristic Cuisine") was performed by the SPCO on its Chamber Music series and Simple Songs was featured on its Masterworks series. During his residency, Kernis is composing several works for the SPCO and is involved in the Chamber Orchestra's innovative education program, CONNECT. In the 1995-96 season, Kernis' much-anticipated "Double Concerto for Violin and Guitar," featuring Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg and Sharon lsbin, is given its world premiere with the SPCO. The Chamber Orchestra also presents the U.S. premiere of Kernis' acclaimed Goblin Market, which received rave reviews at its January 1995 London world premiere, with London's The Guardian calling Kernis "a remarkable composer" and the Times predicting that "Kernis should have opera managements queueing at his door with commissions."

If Aaron Jay Kernis wasn't even thirty-five when he finished Colored Field , what will he write when he's twice that age? Even people who normally are resistant to modern classical music must succumb to its drama and its emotional sincerity, and appreciate its fine craftsmanship. The San Francisco Symphony asked Kernis for a concerto for English horn (good choice - there isn't enough concertante music for this attractive instrument), and that's what Kernis gave them, although I wonder if the individuals who awarded the commission were aware of what an overwhelming piece they were going to get. It's true that the English horn is associated with pastoral pipings, but it also has been associated with Death - for example, the song of the Swan of Tuonela in Sibelius's Four Legends from the Kalevala . Several years ago, Kernis visited the remains of the death-camps at Auschwitz and Birkenau. While he was there, he saw a young American boy with his family. Kernis was struck by the contrast between the modern image of the boy sitting on the ground and chewing blades of grass, and the historical image of what had happened on that same soil just five decades earlier. These contrasting images inspired Kernis as he wrote his concerto.
