Joseph Joachim J oseph Joachim was born on June 28th, 1831, in Kittsee, near Pressburg (Austria-Hungary), as the son of a Jewish merchant family. He died in Berlin on August 15, 1907. In 1833, the family moved to Budapest, where the child was given his first violin lessons by the Polish concert master of the Pest Royal Opera. His talents were immediately apparent and it became clear that music was to be his future. Joachim had been a child prodigy. He showed such delight in a toy violin he received as a gift at age four that he was given lessons on the instrument, for which he revealed a precocious genius. A t the age of seven, Joachim was sent to Vienna, where he studied with Joseph Böhm, the principal teacher at the city's conservatory, and Georg Hellmesberger Senor, concertmaster of the court opera orchestra. He played in Joseph Hellmesberger's "Children's Quartett", attended the Vienna Conservatory and finished his studies at the tender age of twelve. I n 1843, when he was twelve, Joachim went to Leipzig to enroll at Felix Mendelssohn's newly opened conservatory, but Mendelssohn could find nothing to improve in his violin technique though he did oversee his general education and his training in composition with Moritz Hauptmann, and so arranged for his formal debut at a concert in which Mendelssohn also enlisted Clara Schumann and Pauline Viardot as participants, and his first appearance as orchestral soloist with the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy became his mentor and role-model; he formed Joachim's artistic personality. Mendelssohn saw that his pupil was instructed not only on the violin but also in the humanities and in the art of composition.

      1.Life
Joseph Joachim was born in 1831, the seventh of eight children of a Hungarian Jewish family from Kitsee, Hungary. When he was four, his father gave him a toy violin which caused Joseph such delight that it was decided to allow him to study the violin. After a public performance of a double concerto by Eck with his teacher, a local violinist by the name of Serwaczynski, he was sent by the suggestion of the virtuoso Ernst to Vienna to study with the also Hungarian Joseph Boehm, Ernst’s teacher. After four years in Vienna, Joachim was sent to Leipzig to enter the Conservatory there. In his entrance examination by Felix Mendelssohn , he was told that he needed no conservatory; he was told instead to play for Ferdinand David on occasion, study composition, and play with Mendelssohn, in addition to getting a general education. This was done. Mendelssohn was a great influence in the young Joachim’s musical development, bolstering his admiration and respect for the works of the great composers, freed his musical outlook, and gave him many valuable performance opportunities. The young violinist’s fame grew and spread rapidly, bringing him to such renown that he was asked to play Spohr’s Seventh Concerto at a concert honoring the composer, where

I think that…this story should be told because it's a special story, a special moment in the lives of three people. It demonstrates many, many things for both Jew and non-Jew, it also reminds [us] of what people can descend to, on one hand, and what other persons can ascend to.
    -Joachim Joseph, PhD
    Introduction
Dawn is breaking on the morning of February 1, 2003 above West Texas. Suddenly the peace of the early morning is shattered by two loud bangs. The Space Shuttle Columbia is announcing its return home, causing sonic booms as it streaks across the sky at three times the speed of sound. The shuttle is speeding toward a Florida homecoming. But in an instant, onlookers below and controllers in Houston are stunned at what they see. Something has gone horribly wrong. The shuttle has broken up, vanished! Gone is its precious cargo of seven astronauts from around the world. Among them, Col. Ilan Ramon, Israel's first Astronaut.
    The Story
In the spring of 1944, Joachim Joseph - "Yoya" - as his friends call him - was nearing his 13th birthday as an inmate of Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Among his fellow inmates was the former Chief Rabbi of Holland, who prepared Joseph for his coming-of-age ceremony, his Bar Mitzvah. Each morning they rose at 4:00 a.m. to secretly study the Torah, on a tiny scroll that the Rabbi had smuggled into the camp. On the morning of Joseph's Bar Mitzvah, each of the inmates in the barracks gathered before dawn to celebrate, secretly and with whatever meager means they had, his being called to the Torah. In the evening the Rabbi told Joseph that he was sure he would not come out of the camp alive, and he was giving the Torah to Joseph on the condition that Joseph tell the world the story of what happened in the camp.
