Art is not tame, and Nature is not wild, in the ordinary sense. A perfect work of man's art would also be wild or natural in a good sense. (...) Art can never match the luxury and superfluity of Nature. In the former all is seen; it annot afford concealed wealth, and is niggardly in comparison; bu Nature, even when she is scant and thin outwardly, satisfies us still by the assurance of a certain generosity at the roots." why this music is interesting, important, and maybe even fun. [rgable]
The Unanswered Question (1906). Charles Ives. /societal relevance/
In an essay " Movies as Mirror on Society ", San Francisco film critic Mick LaSalle writes about current movies reflecting a lack of faith in both individuals and institutions: If anything, American movies are more cynical and despairing than before. Their implicit message: People are garbage and the world is terrifying. I buy into the somewhat different Fourth Turning historical doctrine where we are near the end of an unraveling era (" third turning ") , where people hold institutions in low esteem but view themselves with high esteem: Wars are fought with moral fervor but without consensus or follow-through. Eventually, cynical alienation hardens into a brooding pessimism... During an Unraveling, an obliging society serves purposeful individuals, and even good people find it hard to connect with their community. LaSalle also links post-World War II film noir with Charles Ives: I see noir as a despairing response to conformity, depicting the individual's lone wail and his subsequent submersion. Or to put it another way, noir is the cinema's equivalent of composer Charles Ives' "The Unanswered Question."

    Charles Ives

    Ives, Charles (Edward) ( b Danbury, 20 October, 1874 - d New York, 19 May, 1954)
Charles Ives was influenced firstly by his father, a bandmaster who had libertarian ideas about what music might be. Aged around 19 (the dating of Ives's music is notably problematic), he produced psalm settings that exploit polytonality and other unusual procedures. He then studies with Parker at Yale from 1894 to 1898, and he demonstrated signs of becoming a relatively conventional composer in his first symphony (1898), and songs of the period. However, he did not work in the music, but the insurance business and composition became a weekend activity, but one he practised assiduously. During the twenty years following his graduation he wrote three more symphonies, and numerous other orchestral and instrumental works.
The only consistent characteristic of music from this period is liberation from rule. He composed little after 1922 when he published a volume of 114 songs. Most of his music had been written without prospect of performance, and it was only towards the end of his life that it began to be played frequently and appreciated.

    Charles Ives' Universe Symphony
    realized by Johnny Reinhard
exclusively from Ives' Universe Symphony sketches
June 6, 1996 Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, NY
The American Festival of Microtonal Music, Inc. (AFMM) presented Johnny Reinhard conducting his newly completed version of Charles Ives' UNIVERSE SYMPHONY in an 8 pm concert at Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center on June 6, 1996.
The UNIVERSE SYMPHONY is just over an hour in length and is orchestrated for 70 musicians. Seriously worked out by 1915, Ives set out an algorithmic series of sketches asking for someone to finish the work . Beginning with a 27 minute percussion Prelude of the Cosmos , the composition is at once abstract and programmatic. "The Ninth at one end and the 'Universe' Symphony at the other: together they enclose the trancendentalist epoch in music"
(Richard Taruskin, New York Times 10/23/94) The work's polymicrotonal content, use of homemade instruments, improvisation, clever instrumentation, and use of an "overtone machine" place it quite in advance of later developments.
The AFMM Orchestra draws upon the very best NYC Musicians - specialists in the virtuosic world of contemporary music in general, experts in microtonal performing practices in specific.

    Ives, Charles Edward
American composer, whose technical innovations and freedom of imagination anticipated a great deal of 20th-century music.
Born in Danbury, Connecticut, Ives received his most significant musical education from his father, George E. Ives, a bandmaster and highly original musical thinker.
After graduating from Yale University in 1898, Ives worked in New York City as an insurance clerk and church organist. In 1906 he founded his own insurance company; his innovations in the insurance field include the practice of estate planning.
Realizing that his music was too unconventional to provide a living, he composed primarily for his own pleasure and, except for works for organ and church choirs, most of his compositions remained unperformed. After ill health forced Ives to retire in 1930, he wrote no more music. In the decades that followed interest in his music grew, and many of his works received long-delayed first performances.
Ives's music is rich in Americana. He quotes, distorts, combines, and disguises familiar church and revival hymns, marches, and songs from the American Civil War (1861-1865). Much of the dissonance in his music stems from the clash of keys or large blocks of sound, as in the approach of two parade bands in Three Places in New England (1903-1914).
