Heinrich Isaac
(c.1450 - 1517)
Dutch Renaissance composer of vocal music, one of the leading contemporaries of Josquin Desprez . Isaac composed in all the forms of the time, preferring a conservative harmonic idiom, usually based on imitation. He was one of the most prolific composers of parody masses, using such unusual themes as "bass dances." As with many of his contemporaries, Isaac spent extensive time in Italy. He was highly influential in the later development of music in Renaissance Germany. ~ Todd McComb

Franco-Flemish composer. Although the majority of his professional life was spent in Italy, particularly Florence, his influence was greatest in Germanic lands, where he lived intermittently from 1497, when he became court Composer to Maximilian I. Of his students, the most notable was Ludwig Senfl His long association with Italy began when he entered the service of the Medici in Florence around 1485 as a singer in the Cantori di S. Giovanni, a group that supplied polyphonic music for the cathedral and other local churches. His work for Maximilian I, from 1497 until his death, did not require continuous residence at the court but allowed stays of considerable length in various German cities, in northern Italy, and in Florence. Nevertheless, his position as imperial court composer and the many pieces he wrote for the Hofkapelle brought the Netherlandish style of music to German-speaking areas. Among his works are about 40 Mass Ordinaries, half cyclic (in the Netherlandish tradition), half based on liturgically appropriate plainsong melodies (in the German tradition); almost 100 cycles of the Proper of the Mass (following Germanic liturgical custom; most published posthumously in the 3-volume Choralis constantinus ); over fifty independent motets; and nearly 100 secular songs, including French chansons, a few Italian

Heinrich Isaac (around March 26 ) was a composer . He is regarded as one of the most significant contemporaries of Josquin Desprez Little is known about Isaac's early life, but it is probable that he was born in Flanders . It is known that he was writing music by the mid , and the first documentary reference to him is from 1484, when he was court composer at Innsbruck . The following year, he entered the service of Lorenzo de Medici at Florence , where he was organistist , choir master, and teacher to Lorenzo's children. By 1497, Isaac was in the employ of Emperor Maximilian I . He travelled widely in Germany , and is credited with having a big influence on German composers of the time. Isaac returned to Florence in 1514, and died there in 1517. Isaac composed a wide variety of music, including masseses , motets, German and Italian songs and instrumental music. He was one of the most prolific composers of his time, but his work has been largely neglected in favour of Josquin (although the composer Anton Webern wrote his thesis on Isaac). His best known work is probably the

    Isaac, Heinrich (c. 1450 - 1517)
It would be impossible to single out works from the enormous quantity of music written by the great Flemish composer Heinrich Isaac, a musician whose career took him to Florence, under the patronage of the Medici, and to Vienna, where he served the Emperor Maximilian, exercising a decisive influence on the music of the German part of the empire. He died in Florence in 1517. In addition to a quantity of music for the church, Isaac wrote a considerable amount of secular music, much of it vocal, including the well known Insprugk, ich muss dich lassen, a reference to the time he spent in Innsbruck in the service of the Emperor.

    20. Mass Settings Of Heinrich Isaac
Biography and overview of his liturgical works including various combinations of unison and polyphony.
    http://web.bsu.edu/jcarter2/Isaac.htm
Mass Settings of Heinrich Isaac (c.1450-1517) © Dr. Jeffrey Carter Flemish composer Heinrich Isaac, one of the most gifted, versatile, and influential of Renaissance era composers, was born circa 1450 in Flanders. The first definitive record of his life and travels exists in Innsbruck in 1484 as he was traveling to Florence . His first principal employer was Lorenzo de' Medici of Florence, and Isaac maintained close ties with Florence the Medici family his entire life. He sang in "Cantori di S. Giovanni" at the cathedral, in addition to composing masses, motets, and Italian songs. In April 1497 Isaac became court composer for the Hapsburg Emperor Maximilian I, who was then settled in northern Italy. Isaac adopted the liturgical and musical customs of his employer, but imbued the German style with his Netherlands skill. His position with the Hofkappele seems to have allowed him freedom to travel and work elsewhere instead of requiring full-time residence; Isaac has connections to Constance, Innsbruck, Ferrare, Augsburg, Nuremburg, and Torgau, among other cities. Most of Isaac's music was written for his two principal employers, and for other patrons and churches. Isaac was awarded a pension by the city of Florence in 1514, this at the behest of Pope Leo X, a Medici family member. He spent his last few years in Florence; records vaguely indicate a diplomatic capacity for Maximilian. He died in March 1517, leaving compositions of extraordinary range and high quality, and esteemed as well for his character.
