Johann Nepomuk Hummel
Johann Nepomuk Hummel 14 November 17 October ) was an Austrian composer and virtuoso pianist. His music reflects a transition from the Classical to the Romantic musical era. Hummel was born in Pressburg (now Bratislava Slovakia and died in Weimar Germany . His father, Josef Hummel, was the director of the Imperial School of Military Music and the conductor of the Theater Orchestra. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart offered Johann music lessons at the age of seven after being impressed with his ability. Hummel was taught by Mozart for two years and made his first concert appearance at the age of nine. He then embarked on a European tour before receiving instruction from Muzio Clementi in London , where he stayed for four years before returning to Vienna . He was then instructed by Johann Georg Albrechtsberger Joseph Haydn , and Antonio Salieri In 1804, he succeeded Haydn as Kapellmeister to Prince Esterházy. He held this post for seven years before being dismissed. Following this, he toured Russia and Europe and married the opera singer Elisabeth Röckel. He later held the position of Kapellmeister at Stuttgart and Weimar.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel Born: November 14, 1778, Pozsony, Hungary. (now Bratislava, Slovakia)
Died: October 17, 1837, Weimar, Thuringia (Germany) Austrian composer and outstanding virtuoso pianist during the period of transition from Classical to Romantic musical styles. Hummel's most important compositions are his piano works, consisting of trios, sonatas, rondos, and six concerti, all elegant in style and virtuosic in their melodic writing and ornamentation. Fluent, clear in texture, and well-suited to the light Viennese piano action of his day, these works nevertheless lack the emotional depth and coherence evident in the works of Hummel's great contemporary rival, Ludwig van Beethoven. Hummel also composed nine operas, three masses, a mandolin concerto, and chamber works, notably the Septet in D Minor. He made innovations in fingering methods, published in his Klavierschule ("Piano School") in 1828. His Concerto a tromba principale is often performed and recorded by todays classical trumpet artists. Links: o.j.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel
Composer and pianist. Son of a musician; a child prodigy. At eight he moved with his family to Vienna, where his father was conductor at the Theater auf der Wieden. He was a pupil of Mozart's until 1788, when he began a tour managed by his father through Germany to Copenhagen, Scotland, and London (1790-92), where he was much admired; 1791-92, published his first piano and chamber music there; played in Holland and Germany on his return to Vienna. He spent the next decade in Vienna, first studying with Albrechtsberger and Salieri , and having a few organ lessons from Haydn in 1795; he played little in public, earning his living through a heavy schedule of piano teaching, and producing a few compositions, primarily chamber. His position in Vienna's musical life was shaken by the emergence of Beethoven, whose abilities somewhat overawed him and with whom his personal relations were sometimes difficult. (Nevertheless, he came from Weimar in 1827 to visit Beethoven on his deathbed and was a pallbearer at his funeral.) Kapellmeister Kapellmeister His theater music aroused scant attention beyond its immediate purpose, and he composed little for orchestra apart from dance music. He composed considerable chamber music, mostly with piano, including piano trios and the celebrated Septet in D minor op. 74 (ca. 1816). Of his piano concertos, those in A minor op. 85 (ca. 1816), B minor op. 89 (1819), E major op. I 10 (1814), and A flat major op. 113 (1827) were the best known. His piano music included sonatas and much salon music (rondos, variations, fantasies, etc.); 24 etudes op. 125 (1833); 2 Sonatas for 4-hands opp. 51, 92. Also songs, choruses.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel
The reputation of Hummel has been clouded by time. Born in Pressburg (the modern Bratislava) in 1778, he was a pupil of Mozart and enjoyed a successful career as a pianist and composer. He was employed by the Esterhazy family at Eisenstadt as Konzertmeister, while Haydn , now in retirement in Vienna, continued as nominal Kapellmeister. He later served as Kapellmeister at Stuttgart and from 1818 at Weimar. Recent recordings and performances have revived some interest in two of Hummel's half dozen or so piano concertos, Op. 85 and Op. 89. His Trumpet Concerto is a useful part of current repertoire.
