44. John Clay's Grandfather
mother, but they were already married when REDH occured, and Sherlock holmes should have mentioned his mother was a Royal Duchess. Mary augusta Louise Olga
http://www.parkcity.ne.jp/~hirayama/claygrandfather.htm
John Clay's Grandfather By Hirayama Yuichi Sherlock Holmes said that John Clay's grandfather "was a Royal Duke, and he himself has been to Eton and Oxford," in REDH. Richard Lancelyn Green wrote in his footnote of The Oxford Sherlock Holmes "the grandfather would have been one of the four sons of George III (1738 - 1820) who were not enthroned." This theory is widely known in the Sherlockian world. In his Practical Handbook of Sherlockian Heraldry , Julian Wolff said "It is generally agreed that John Clay's grandfather was one of the seven sons of George III because they were the Royal Dukes who were in action during the epoch that his link with royalty was forged." Jabez Wilson discribed John Clay as "not short of thirty." As this case occured in 1887 (Baring-Gould), 1889 (Folsom and Zeisler) or 1890 (Bell, Blakeney, Brend, Christ, Dakin and Hall), Clay would have been born before 1860. Wilson also stated "he's not such a youth either. It's hard to say his age." Holmes called him "young John Clay." Clay would have been in his thirties, or might have been in his early forties. Namely, he was born between about 1845 to 1860. John Clay had no titles. Holmes mentioned him as "Mr. John Clay." Inspector Jones called him as "your highness," but it was a joke. His father would not have been a peer.

45. FREDERICK WILLIAM HOLMES VC
holmes finally left the Army on the 20th August 1921 and went to work in London, but a few years later left Britain to live in Port augusta, South Australia.
http://www.victoriacross.org.uk/bbholmes.htm
3 October 2003 Lance Corporal Frederick Holmes Frederick Holmes came from Bermondsey, South East London, and after completing his education joined the Army, aged 18, on 28th September 1907. He served for seven years, was then placed on the reserve, but two weeks later was called up for active service on the outbreak of WWI in August 1914. After extremely hazardous fighting in the morning and afternoon of the 26th August 1914, the order to retire was given by General Smith-Dorien. To carry out the retirement, however, was a very dangerous business as each man had to run across the zone of land to safety under close fire of the enemy. When it came for Holmes' turn to escape, he noticed Bugler Woodcock lying close to the path with both of his legs broken at the knees. Without considering his own safety, Holmes picked up the injured man and giving him a fireman's lift made off as quickly as he could. Holmes finally came across some stretcher bearers in a small village about two miles from the trenches and handed over Woodcock to them. After travelling about three miles, Holmes and the gun found themselves finally out of the range of German shelling, and stopped at a stream to allow the horses to drink. By this time Holmes had no idea where he was and it was not until the following evening that the horses finally brought him into the rearguard of a retiring artillery column. At first an artillery Major was suspicious but after a while Holmes' story was verified and he became an honoured guest of the battery.

Byrd says faith filled void golf couldn't

The Augusta Chronicle
Jonathan Byrd ( Stats Bio ) , in Augusta for his second Masters Tournament, gave a bird's-eye view of life as a rookie on the PGA Tour to 650 golf fans Tuesday at the 10th annual Augusta Golf Breakfast at Warren Baptist Church. In 2002, he said, he saw more golf, golf courses and pros than he ever had before. In all, he competed in 32 tournaments that first year on Tour. "You have imagined yourself playing with all these guys since you were young, and now you are out there with them. It is kind of intimidating," said Byrd, 26, who tied for eighth in last year's Masters. He said he is thankful he can live out his dreams on the PGA Tour, but what has given him greater fulfillment and purpose is his faith in Jesus Christ. Growing up, he liked the long, quiet hours on the golf course and was happy if he improved a little bit every day. At Clemson University, his identity became more invested in his golf game.

A two generation descendant report is provided for John Halford. A great many Halfords trace their line to John Halford and Nancy Dalton of Rutherford County, North Carolina, in the late 1700s. However, I am convinced that there is much confusion about relationships in this family. (ex. Nancy Dalton was actually Sally Dalton) I am convinced that John Halford's parents were John and Lucy Halford and that some of the children assigned to John, Jr., were actually his siblings. I have provided documentation with this report and I need your help to either confirm or discredit some of the assumptions I have made. Knowledge of relevant primary records would be greatly appreciated. If you want a narrative analysis of the Rutherford County Halfords, visit my "Halford: Research Report" file below. If you want information on more than 17,000 people realted to Halfords, check my link to "Halford: Southern US."
I would appreciate any additions, corrections, or verifications you can offer to my genealogy. I am happy to share what I have about the families listed.
Happy Hunting!

Between the years of 1827 and 1828 the Augusta Arsenal was dismantled moved from it's old location along the banks of the Savannah River and was erected on what now is the campus of Augusta State University in the Summerville neighborhood. A fever epidemic that nearly killed everyone on the Arsenal river site was probably the deciding factor for the move. In 1955 the Augusta Arsenal closed its doors for the last time. September 9, 1959 the Arsenal Cemetery at the North West end of the Augusta College Campus on Arsenal Avenue off of Walton Way was transferred to the City of Augusta by the Department of the Army. The records listed below were copied in the field by Augusta-Richmond County Cemetery employees with the exception of one noted below of Private John Holmes. His stone which is now unreadable was visited by Mr. Morton Reese on March 31, 1936 and at that time he recorded the inscription on Private Holmes's sand stone marker.

57. Voices Of Green Maine - Julian Holmes On The Sears Island Cargo Port
Says holmes, Ozone reduction and improved health for Maine people were sacrificed for An Open Letter to Governor Angus King State House augusta, Maine 04333.
http://home.gwi.net/~troberts/Julian/Sears76.html
Julian Holmes on The Sears Island Cargo Port
Introduction:
In an Open Letter dated June 5 to Maine Governor Angus King, Wayne resident Julian Holmes criticizes the Governor's economic development and environmental-protection policies. Holmes' observations evolved from responses to a series of Freedom of Information (FOI) requests he made of three Federal and three Maine-State agencies to examine files related to the proposal to develop Sears Island as a cargo port. The files reveal:
  • Failure by certain State and Federal officials to follow carefully the provisions of the National Environmental Policy Act. Surprisingly skimpy records kept by Governor King on the Sears Island cargo-port, one of King's most highly promoted economic- development plans. Possible reluctance of Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife (DIFW) officials when asked by the Governor's Chief Legal Counsel to make "detailed" responses to Federal scientists on the impact of the Sears Island cargo-port project: "It is a difficult and painful situation for scientific staff [DIFW] when directed to prepare comments on a scientific issue in a particular way which may not reflect staff's scientifically based opinion." (EPA Memorandum, October 19, 1995)
  • Holmes feels King's meager record-keeping is symptomatic of flawed public policy, and that more concern should be shown by the Governor for existing State and Federal laws that govern the public's right-to-know about operations of government. According to Holmes, too many of King's policies are designed to benefit the wealthy and the interests of big corporations. Yet, promotion and implementation of these policies is at taxpayers' expense as with the Sears Island cargo-port, the anti-Ban-Clearcutting campaign, the use of Reformulated Gasoline (RFG), the fast-tracked MBNA corporate compound at Ducktrap Mountain in Northport, and the Kenetech wind-power project.
