Home Page La vida de Paul Hindemith Nace en Hanau (Alemania) el 16 de noviembre de 1895 en el seno de una familia modesta pero de gran afición musical. Desde 1904 estudia violín y rudimentos de teoría musical. Cinco años después ingresa en el Conservatorio de Frankfurt, donde estudia con A. Mendelssohn y con B. Sekles, mientras recibe lecciones privadas de violín con Adolf Rebner. En 1915 obtiene el puesto de concertino en la Orquesta de la Opera de Frankfurt. En 1919 queda libre el puesto de viola en el Cuarteto de Rebner y Hindemith decide ocuparlo, abandonando el violín. En 1921 realiza una gira de conciertos con el nuevo instrumento en la que se estrenan algunas de sus obras. En 1927 obtiene un puesto de profesor de composición en la Hochschule für Musik de Berlín. Pronto los sectores nazis lo acusaron de atonal y en 1935 debe abandonar todos sus cargos públicos. Exiliado, reside en Ankara, donde se dedica a la divulgación de la música en aquella región. En 1939 viaja a los Estados Unidos e imparte clases en la Universidad de Yale, adoptando la nacionalidad norteamericana en 1946.

Paul Hindemiths Werk ist so breit und unterschiedlich aufgefächert, dass es schwer fällt, Weniges und Repräsentatives herauszugreifen. Dazu kommt, dass Hindemith auch als Musiktheoretiker und Kompositionslehrer großen Einfluß hatte. In einer Zeit, in der die Stile begannen, auseinanderzudriften, bot er ein sachliches, auf Musikantentum und Spielfreude abzielendes Idiom als Grundlage an. Das hatte auch mit Handwerk zu tun. Harald Genzmer, einer der wichtigsten Schüler Hindemiths, erzählt, dass manche Studenten mit „Tränen aus dem Unterricht liefen“. Hindemith war sehr streng: Sie hatten nicht „anständig gearbeitet“. Doch diese Wahrnehmung, die vor allem den späten und arrivierten Hindemith im Gedächtnis hat, unterschlägt seinen avantgardistischen, dabei immer lustvoll frechen Ausgangspunkt. Denn Hindemith schaltete sich mit seinem selbstbewußten Auftreten auf der Komponistenbühne in die heiße Phase des Expressionismus ein. Es ist bezeichnend, dass eines seiner ersten öffentlichen Stücke eine Oper war; bis in seine Spätzeit hinein finden sich musiktheatralische Elemente in seinen Werken, auch in den instrumentalen. Im Jahr 1921 war Hindemith Mitbegründer der Donaueschinger Musiktage, wo ihn die Uraufführung seines Streichquartetts, op. 22 berühmt machte. 1927 wurde er als Professor für Komposition an die Berliner Hochschule für Musik berufen. 1929 war er der Solist bei der Uraufführung von William Waltons Viola-Konzert. Seine Karriere als Komponist blühte anfangs der 30er Jahren, aber nach der Machtübernahme der Nazis verschwanden seine Werke von den Konzertprogrammen. Hindemith emigrierte erst in die Schweiz (1938), dann in die USA (1940), wo er die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft annahm (1946) und an der Yale University lehrte. 1951 akzeptierte er einen Lehrauftrag in Zürich und ließ sich dort 1953 endgültig nieder. Nicht nur als einer der führenden Komponisten unseres Jahrhunderts, sondern auch als Dirigent, Pädagoge und Philosoph nimmt Hindemith seinen festen Platz in der Musikgeschichte ein. Sein Werk umfaßt alle Gattungen: Orchesterwerke, Solokonzerte, Kammermusik für die verschiedensten Instrumente, Chorwerke, Lieder, Opern und Ballette. Außerdem schrieb Hindemith zahlreiche Bücher, Schriften und Aufsätze.
