S.D. Holden to the position of Locomotive Superintendent. This position was retitled to Chief Mechanical Engineer in 1915. In 1917 Hill was awarded a CBE, and retired with the 1923 Grouping. Hill was Justice of the Peace for West Ham before retirement, and became Justice of the Peace for Bexhill-on-Sea afterwards. He died on 14th March 1927. Hill's locomotive building was limited by World War 1, so his tenure was characterised by adapting and repairing. Despite this, he made many improvements including the building of a new foundry and a large engine repair shop at Stratford. Hill is probably best known for his class which was continued by the LNER under Gresley . He also introduced the Robinson superheater to the GER.

Alfred Hill (1870-1960)
Born in Melbourne on the 16th December, 1870, Alfred Francis Hill spent most of his early life in New Zealand. As a child Hill learnt the cornet and violin, playing the former with Martin Simonsen's opera company at the age of nine, and the latter on tour with Charles Harding's Grand Opera Company in 1884. With his brother John, he travelled to Leipzig, where both Hills studied at the Royal Conservatorium of Music between 1887 and 1891. Alfred Hill studied under Gustav Schreck, Hans Sitt and Oscar Paul during this time, and was the winner of the Helbig Prize. He was invited to play second violin with the Gewandhaus Orchestra, and as such played under the conductorship of such composers as Brahms, Grieg, Tchaikovsky and Max Bruch. Hill returned to New Zealand, and worked as a violin teacher, recitalist, chamber musician, and conductor of choirs and orchestras such as the Wellington Orchestral Society. With the Belgian violinist Ovide Musin, he toured New Zealand and travelled to Sydney in March 1897. Hill remained in Sydney, teaching, for a number of years. He continued to conduct ensembles such as the Sydney Liedertafel, and the Great Synagogue Choir, and, on the 1st January, 1901, the Commonwealth Celebrations choir of eleven thousand voices and ten brass bands. From 1902 to 1911 Hill travelled between Australia and New Zealand on a regular basis, writing and conducting opera, in particular. His operas

JOE HILL (ALFRED HAYES/EARL ROBINSON) (1936)
"Joe Hill" was written in Camp Unity in the summer of 1936 in New York State, for a campfire program celebrating him and his songs Casey Jones Pie in the Sky " and others. Before the end of that summer we were hearing of performances in a New Orleans Labor Council, a San Francisco picket line, and it was taken to Spain by the members of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade to help in the fight against Franco. It has travelled around the world since like a folk song, been translated into twelve or fifteen languages. Joan Baez' singing of the song at Woodstock brought it to popular attention, but I still get asked the question, "Did you write 'Joe Hill'?" Earl Robinson, liner notes for "Alive and Well," (Aspen Records APN 30101), 1986. Lyrics as recorded by Earl Robinson, Reeves Sound Studios, New York, NY, Jan 8, 1940 (original issue: Timely 503-A);
Bear Family Records BCD 15720 JL, 1996, p. 72.
I dreamed I saw Joe Hill last night
Alive as you and me
Says I, "But Joe, you're ten years dead,"
