General Friedrich Adolph Riedesel
Freiherr zu Eisenbach (1738-1800)
Dr. Paul Riedesel, Minneapolis General Riedesel is without question the best-known member of his lineage, and certainly so among the Americans with whom he shares his last name though no blood kinship. Almost as well-known is his wife, who was born Luise Charlotte von Massow. Her written observations of their experiences during the American Revolution were published in both German and, later, English. This account is based largely on the work of Dr. Karl Siegmar Baron von Galéra entitled Vom Reich zum Rheinbund: Weltgeschichte des 18. Jahrhunderts in einer kleinen Residenz Ancestry. The titled Riedesels of Friedrich Adolph's day, and all that follow, are descended from Hermann IV (1481-1529). In an unusual move, Hermann divided his possessions and rights between two of his sons. A further division two generations later resulted in a system of four "houses" which endured until 1756 when one of them died out. Members of the four lines had their own residences and properties, but managed certain affairs collectively. In 1680, male members of all lines were granted the dignity of "Freiherr (Baron) zu Eisenbach" by the German Emperor. They were not and are not "von Riedesels."

The Riedesels, Freiherrn zu Eisenbach
Dr. Paul Riedesel, Minneapolis This page serves as an introduction to the Riedesel Freiherren (Barons) of Lauterbach/Hessen for the benefit of the English-speaking reader. Within the United States, the best known member of this family is no doubt General Friedrich Adolph Riedesel, Freiherr zu Eisenbach (1738-1800) who led a contingent of German troops on behalf of the British during the American Revolutionary War. As will be clear, there is no provable blood relationship between the General, his family and any of the Riedesel families in North America today. The latter all descend from a line of peasant farmers in the counties of Wittgenstein and surrounding areas. Most of my account is based on a 1961 history written by Dr. Karl Siegmar Baron von Galéra entitled Vom Reich zum Rheinbund: Weltgeschichte des 18. Jahrhunderts in einer kleinen Residenz The Riedesels trace their origins to Ritter (Knight) Dietmar Riedesel who was born around 1200 and is first mentioned in a document of 1226. Two men who are presumed to be brothersLudwig and Ortwinfollow, but it is unknown if they were the sons or grandsons of Dietmar. One of themmost likely Ortwinhad a son, Johann, who is the ancestor of all who followed. The family was then based at Melsungen, which is north of Lauterbach. There were other Riedesel men-at-arms who are documented in medieval history who were not part of the lineage that was eventually based around the town of Lauterbach. The author believes that the Riedesels of Wittgenstein descend from these "other" Riedesels, not the progeny of Ritter Johann. I have written a separate article called

Note: The list below is only complete for those polities that survived beyond 1806. Within the Holy Roman Empire, there existed countless minor states (ecclesiastical states, imperial cities, imperial villages, lordships, counties, baronies, principalities, etc.), which are nearly impossible to list with even partial accuracy. A major reorganization was brought about by the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803, when more than 100 polities were abolished. Polities listed prior to 1806 are a sample of the major or most well known polities of the Holy Roman Empire and the Confederation of the Rhine. After 1806, all the polities that survived the Napoleonic Wars and the Congress of Vienna are listed. For the sake of providing a division between eras, after the republican revolutions of 1918, which overthrew the last German monarchies, remaining states are listed under German states since 1918 ; these include the states and provinces of the Weimar Republic, Third Reich, and the modern period. The provinces of Prussia are listed in a separate section following the entry for Prussia ( Prussian provinces to 1946 ). Statistical data is given only for those polities that survived to 1918.

    The Fall of the Eagles
The collapse of European Monarchy in November 1918
By By assassinating the Archduke Franz-Ferdinand in Sarajevo on June 28, 1914, Gavrilo Princip never imagined his regicide would plunge Europe into war. Not only did Princip's daring act bring the most widespread war Europe had witnessed, but it also changed the map of the continent forever. The old continent was governed by a collecting of monarchs who either ruled vast empires, or pint sized principalities. By the end of the war in November 1918, most of those rulers had lost their thrones. In the Europe of 1914, only four countries were not ruled by a monarch. France still had a living sovereign in the person of the Empress Eugenie, widow of Napoleon III, but the republic had survived for almost five decades. In 1910 King Manuel II of Portugal was overthrown and the republic quickly declared. The other two republics were Switzerland and the lilliputian state of San Marino, neither had ever known a monarchical system of government. The hurricane caused by the Great War eroded the political weight of the German Empire. By the end of the war, with Germany's infrastructure stretched to its limits, the monarchy was ready to collapse. The disappearance of the German Empire also meant to fall to the twenty odd monarchs who ruled within the empire.
