    Franz Joseph Haydn biography
A brief biogrpaphy of Franz Joseph Haydn, who is remembered in history as the Father of the Symphony and an adventurer into almost every element of music.
Franz Joseph Haydn is best remembered for his symphonic music, honored by music historians who have dubbed him the "Father of the Symphony." That is a well-known fact. But did you know that Haydn worked his way from peasant to Kapellmeister where he lived in the house of a prince? Did you know that although Austria was his home, he traveled to London to write his most famous symphonies? Did you know that Haydn's oratorio "The Creation" grew out of his love of nature, as he was an avid hunter and fisherman? Or did you know that Haydn was mentor to a young music student by the name of Mozart? These are the lesser-known facts, the parts of Haydn's life that allow us to peek inside a great man's legacy to see what made him tick. Haydn was indeed a self-made man. Born in the small village of Rohrau, Austria, Franz Joseph Haydn was the second of twelve children. His father was a wagon maker by trade, but quite musical. On Sundays, the Haydn family often gave private concerts. Haydn's father played the harp while Haydn and his mother sang. A cousin who was a schoolmaster recognized the five-year-old boy's talent and offered to take him into his school so that he could receive musical instruction. The food portions for the children were meager and Haydn himself said that "there was more flogging than food." Still, Haydn persevered, determined even as a young boy to maximize the opportunity and learn all that he could.

    COMPOSERS
    FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN
Born: March 31, 1732. Rohrao, Austria
Died: May 31, 1809. Vienna, Austria
    In his own words...

"My Prince was always satisfied with my works. I not only had the encouragement of constant approval but as conductor of an orchestra I could make experiments, observe what produced an effect and what weakened it, and... improve, alter, make additions, or omissions, and be as bold as I pleased." Austrian composer. Part of the so-called Viennese School, and an important influence on both Mozart and Beethoven.
Our image of the composer as an "artist," concerned with doing only what he or she wants to, is rooted in the nineteenth century. Composers of previous periods did not often have that luxury, but Franz Joseph Haydn did. Most of his creative life was spent in the service of the Esterházy family, writing pieces for their needs and desires. For example, he composed over 125 trios for the baryton an instrument something like a viola da gamba simply because it was the instrument that Prince Nikolaus played.
Surprisingly, these seeming restrictions, compounded by his frequent sojourns to the Esterházy summer palace at Esterháza (far removed from the musical center of Vienna) did little to dampen Haydn's creativity. Instead, he stated that this isolation and his ability to work daily with the musicians he was writing for was a perfect situation. Nor did it diminish his fame. By the 1780s, his music had been published all over Europe, and he was well-regarded in the music world. Because of this, he was invited to various cities and commissioned to write musical pieces for premieres in those cities. Most notable are the six symphonies he wrote for the Concerts Spirituels in Paris (Nos.82-87, called his "Paris" symphonies) and the twelve he wrote for the concert promoter Johann Peter Salomon in London (Nos.93-104, called the "London" symphonies). His final works, mostly sacred music for his patron, culminated in two large oratorios

Franz Joseph Haydn By Paul Musser paul@musica.co.uk Born 31 March, 1732 in Rohrau, Austria Died 31 May, 1809 in Vienna, Austria Through quality and quantity, Haydn and his stylish works dictated the musical direction of the entire Classical period. Born in the small town of Rohrau on the Hungarian border, Franz Joseph Haydn was the son of a local wheelwright. He received his first musical instruction at the age of five from his uncle. A talented young singer, Haydn gained the bulk of his early musical education as a member of the boy choir at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. It was there he remained until his voice changed, forcing him to leave the choir and find employment elsewhere. Haydn made his living initially as a freelance musician and teacher, eking out an existence while studying theory and composition. He began taking lessons from Italian composer Nicola Porpora and eventually landed a job as musical director for Count Morzin. His biggest break, however, came when he entered into the service of Prince Paul Anton Ezterhazy, a wealthy and influential patron of the arts, in 1761.

His operas, for all their daintines: In the development of instrumental polyphony Haydns work was almost as important as that of Mozart. Having at his disposal a band of picked virtuosi he could produce effects as different from the tentative experiments of C. P. E. Bach as these were from the orchestral platitudes of Reutter or Hasse, His symphony Le Midi (written in 1761) already shows a remarkable freedom and independence in the handling of orchestra] forces, and further stages of advance were reached in the oratoric of Tobias, in the Paris and Salomon symphonies, and above al in the Creation, which turns to good account some of the debt which he owed to his younger contemporary. The importanc of this lies not only in a greater richness of musical color, bul in the effect which it produced on the actual substance anc texture of composition. The polyphony of Beethoven wa~ unquestionably influenced by it and, even in his latest sonata~ and quartets, may be regarded as its logical outcome. The compositions of Haydn include 104 symphonies, 16 overtures 76 quartets, 68 trios, 54 sonatas, 31 Concertos and alarge number 6 divertimentos, cassations and other instrumental pieces; 24 operas am dramatic pieces, 16 Masses, a Stabat Mater, interludes for the Sever Words, 3 oratorios, 2 Te Deums and many smaller pieces for th church, over 40 songs, over 50 canons and arrangements of Scottisi and Welsh national melodies.

Bach

Austrian composer Franz Joseph Haydn, who strongly influenced the development of the classical style of music in the 18th century. The death of his patron Prince Esterhazy in 1790 allowed him to accept an invitation to visit London where he was inspired to compose his London Symphonies, which included the popular Surprise and London symphonies (numbers 94 and 104 respectively).
Austrian composer. He was instrumental in establishing and perfecting the classical sonata form, and wrote numerous chamber and orchestral works (he produced more than a hundred symphonies). He also composed choral music, including the oratorios The Creation (1798) and The Seasons (1801). He was the first great master of the string quartet, and was a teacher of Mozart and Beethoven.

    Franz Josef Haydn
Josef Haydn is one of the three great composers of the Classical period, which was centered in Vienna, and one of the most creative and resourceful composers in the history of music. Born more than twenty years before Mozart and almost forty years before Beethoven, Haydn greatly influenced the two younger composers. Mozart referred to him as "Papa Haydn." It was Haydn who developed the symphony, the string quartet, and the piano sonata into complex and meaningful structures, laying the foundation for Beethoven and Brahms and the other great symphonic composers who followed him. Many composers still write music based on the models developed by Haydn more than two hundred years ago. Josef Haydn was born on March 31, 1732, to a musical family * living in modest circumstances in Rohrau, Austria, a rural community where Slavonic folk music was certainly to be heard. Haydn was sent at the age of eight to Vienna to become a choirboy at Saint Stephen's Cathedral; this beginning of his musical education was predominantly Austrian and urban. The Cathedral provided Haydn with musical instruction, and he learned to play harpsichord, organ, and violin. After his voice changed and he was forced to leave the choir, Haydn spent ten difficult years earning a living as a musician, while studying composition under J.J. Fux and C.P.E. Bach. In 1759, at age 26, Haydn got his first job as director of music and composer working for Count Morzin, for whom he wrote his first symphony and composed mostly instrumental music. The Morzin residence was in Vienna during the winter and at Lukavec Palace near Pilsen, Bohemia (in today's Czech Republic) during the summer.
