Franz Joseph Haydn Life Works Operas Catalogue ... Home Page Franz Joseph Haydn Life The Austrian composer "Papa" Haydn was universally loved and an important figure in the development of the classical symphony and string quartet. He also contributed greatly to most other instrumental forms. In 1759 Haydn was appointed music director of the small musical establishment of Count Morzin. This post, which he filled for almost thirty years, was ideal for Haydn because it gave him the opportunity to work with a group of fine musicians. During his years at the Esterházy country estate, Haydn met many Viennese artists including Wolfgang Mozart The death of Prince Nicholas in 1790 left Haydn free to come and go as he pleased and he accepted a contract to appear in London where he was hailed as a genius. Mozart is said to have begged him not to go to England because he spoke so few languages to which Haydn replied: "The language I speak is understood the world over". Haydn retired to Vienna and died there during the French occupation of the city. Franz Joseph Haydn Works
Haydn's duties as Kapellmeister to the Esterházy family involved the provision of church music, as well as music for entertainment.

Haydn began his musical education in 1741 as a choirboy in the Vienna cathedral, possibly under Fux (who died the following year). When his voice changed young Haydn accompanied Porpora's voice students, thus, inadvertently, becoming Porpora's student as well. In 1761, after a three-year appointment at Lukavec, Haydn became Kapellmeister to the Esterhàzy family, which position he maintained to the end of his life. Between 1790 and 1795 Haydn made two acclaimed trips to London, where he briefly taught Beethoven. Haydn's works include more than 104 symphonies concertos operas oratorios ... Franz Joseph Haydn
Along with Mozart , they were the greatest composers of the Classical Era. Haydn was born as the Baroque Era was just ending, with Handel writing his operas and massive oratorios in London, Bach in Germany composing his complex masterpieces. And by the time of his death, the world was getting ready for the Romantic Era, created by Haydn's one-time student, Ludwig van Beethoven Born in the small village of Rodrau, Austria, Franz Joseph Haydn grew up in a music-loving family (Joseph's younger brother was a well-known religious composer). When he was a young boy, he was sent to live with his father's cousin, where he learned to play the harpsichord and piano. His church choir singing voice was heard by the music director of St Stephen's Church in Vienna. Absolutely stunned, the choirmaster allowed Haydn to join the choir in Vienna, where Haydn attended church school, studying all the ordinary school subjects, in addition to his composition lessons. As he sang in the choir, Haydn used his clothing money to buy books on composition, and taught himself how to compose. However, his singing career did not last long. At seventeen, his voice broke ("He sounds like a crowing rooster," the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria remarked). Haydn, having the playful, childish attitude, performed many practical jokes on his fellow choirmates. But his last, cutting off the pigtail of another singer, was his excuse to leave the choir, thinking he had no use there with a cracked voice. But now, he was a dropout, with no money, job, or place to live.

    Franz Joseph Haydn
