Lou Harrison Worklist Discography Essay Lou Harrison On hearing the news of Lou Harrison's death on February 2, 2003 at the age of 85, Anthony Tommasini wrote in the New York Times that Harrison was "a beloved West Coast composer, a genuine American maverick, a pioneer in the synthesis of Asian and Western music and a father figure to musicians in the region." The previous week, The Juilliard School had celebrated Harrison's 85th birthday with its Focus Festival. Works by Harrison ranged from cello solo to full orchestra, and the series of concerts gathered other composers from the western United States, many of whom were influenced, and encouraged, by Harrison. Almost everyone who met Lou has a story to tell, and a web site has been set up by Charles Amirkhanian for people to post their remembrances: http://www.otherminds.org/shtml/Irememberlou.shtm Click here for Mark Swed's appreciation of Harrison in the Los Angeles Times. Harrison, Lou (1917-2003) American composer Lou Harrison enjoyed a long and distinguished career. He is particularly well known for his use of instruments from the East, especially the Javanese gamelan, and for his melodic and lyrical musical style, despite the fact that he studied composition in the atonal musical style of Arnold Schoenberg. One of America's most original and articulate composers, Harrison explored a number of interests, including puppetry, Esperanto, tuning systems, the construction of musical instruments, and dance. He was also actively involved in political causes, especially pacifism and gay rights. Sponsor Message.
He was born Lou Silver Harrison in Portland, Oregon, on May 14, 1917, but his family moved to the San Francisco Bay area when he was a child, and he lived most of his life on the West Coast of the United States. As a child he was exposed to a wide range of music, including Cantonese operas, Gregorian chants, and Spanish and Mexican music. Harrison attended college at San Francisco State University, where he decided on music as his major and his life's work. He studied there with Henry Cowell and quickly became fascinated with melody and its powers, particularly in the music of the Orient. He also developed an interest in the works of American composer Charles Ives, some of whose musical manuscripts he later edited.

Short Biography from 1995 In addition to teaching and composing Lou has worked as a music critic, an animal nurse, florist, dance accompaniest, and forestry firefighter. He is also a calligraphist and poet (his poetry anthology "Joys and Perplexities" is printed in one of his original fonts), painter, and writer. In 1993, his book "Music Primer" was republished in Tokyo in both English and Japanese. Lou has helped introduce the Indonesian Gamelan to the United States and, with William Colvig, has constructed two large gamelan now in use at San Jose State University and Mills College. Among major performances of Mr. Harrison's work in 1995 are his "Suite for Cello and Harp" by the Oakland Ballet for Remy Charlip's "Ludwig and Lou", and the joyful "Parade for MTT" which opened the San Francisco Symphony season celebrating the inaguration of director Michael Tilson Thomas. The Brooklyn Philharmonic under the direction of Dennis Russell Davis, will present Lou's "New First Suite for Strings" in November. In their free time, Lou and Bill enjoy the company of friends, hosting a gamelan "club" and a sign language class. They are currently designing a straw bale house for a high desert getaway.

Lou Harrison Biography Lou Harrison 's life has been a series of archeological digs. Whenever and wherever he encountered a site of interest on the artistic landscape, he paused for an exploration. The result is more than the simple acquisition of knowledge, however, for Harrison has always found ways of combining his disparate investigations into new untried syntheses. "There is nothing labored about all this," noted Virgil Thomson in 1987. "Lou Harrison is not making plastic roses for funeral parlors. He is simply speaking in many personae and many languages. The message itself is pure Harrison. And that message is of joy, dazzling and serene, and even at its most intensely serious, not without laughter." Harrison's mentor, Henry Cowell, cautioned us to respect hybrids. Harrison would go further, urging us to celebrate them because there really is nothing else. Harrison was born in Portland, Oregon in 1917, but spent most of his formative years in northern California, where his family moved when he was nine. (The Harrisons moved nearly every year- and sometimes even more frequently-from one town to another: Woodland, Sacramento, Stockton, Berkeley, San Francisco, Los Gatos, Redwood City, Belmont, and Burlingame.) Indeed Harrison has been cited as the quintessential West-coast composer, reflecting in his work the region's em-brace of diverse opinions, its fascination with Asia and Latin America, and its devotion to open space. Harrison's musical style was shaped by the San Francisco of the 1930s. There he studied composition with Henry Cowell; accompanied such dancer/choreographers as Carol Beals, Bonnie Bird, Tina Flade, and Lester Horton; and staged high profile percussion concerts with John Cage. At the Golden Gate Exposition on Treasure Island in 1939 he first heard a live Indonesian gamelan orchestra (an ensemble composed primarily of percussion, including metallophones with various types of resonators, and gongs of various sizes, shapes, and orientations). In the city itself he frequented the Chinese opera, which welcomed audiences for 25 cents a show. He and Cage delighted in rummaging through the city's automobile junkyards and import stores for anything that would ping, bong, or twang, and spent hours testing the pitch and resonance of flower pots in the local nurseries.

Lou Harrison in Conversation with John Luther Adams (4/99) John Luther Adams sits down, in Alaska, to visit by telephone with Lou Harrison, in California. 1. Overture JLA: In a mesostic written in your honor, John Cage compared your music to a river opening into its delta. He wrote: "Listening to it, we become ocean." I think John was right, your music is absolutely extraordinary for its breadth, its diversity, its sheer quantity, and its constantly exquisite quality. You're an american master with a remarkable body of work. Last year, your 80th birthday was celebrated with performances all over the world. Some major new pieces, including the Pi'pa Concerto, were premiered. Moving into your ninth decade, you're still going strong! LH: Yes, and we just had two more performances of the concerto. One in Seattle, and one with the California Symphony , in the Bay region. There were 2 different virtuosi, and they both went very well. You know I'm a slowpoke I have a difficult time with things like bowing, metronome marks, and all sorts of decisions. Fortunately, most musicians are kind to me and help, which is a good thing. JLA: Well, the collaborative relationship with performers is part of the fun, isn't it?
