Gounod had a particularly strong influence on French composers from the middle of the 19th century. After a classical education, he entered the Paris Conservatoire, where he won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1837. In Rome he developed his interest in church music. He returned to Paris in 1843, after developing a wide knowledge of earlier and contemporary music abroad. Gounod achieved considerable success in the theatre, particularly with his famous opera "Faust" (1859), but the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 brought a largely unprofitable interruption. He moved to England to conduct for the Royal Choral Society, but his influence on English vocal music was not always for the best. Charles Gounod Works
Gounod’s opera "Faust", based on Goethe's drama that had a wide influence over artists of all kinds during the 19th century, is concerned principally with Faust's seduction of Marguerite, whose own redemption is secured, while Faust remains the prey of the devil Mephistopheles. Recital arias from Faust include the Mephistophelean Le veau d'or (The Golden Calf), the tenor Salut! demeure and Marguerite's Jewel Song Ah! je ris.

    CHARLES FRANCOIS GOUNOD
GOUNOD, CHARLES FRANCOIS The genius of the great composer was, however, destined to assert itself in another fieldthat of sacred music. His friend Camille Saint-Sans, in a volume entitled Portraits el Souvenirs, wntes: Gouriod did not cease all his life to write for the church, to accumulate masses and motetts; but it was at the commencement of his career, in the Messe de Salute Ccile, and at the end, in the oratorios The Redemption and Mors et vita, that he rose highest. Gounod died at St Cloud on the 18th of October 1893. His ,influence on French music was immense, though during the last years of the i9th century it was rather counterbalanced by that of Wagner. Whatever may be the verdict of posterity, it is unlikely that the quality of individuality will be denied to Gounod. To be the composer of Faust is alone a sufficient title to lasting fame. (A. HE.)
