  • Born 10 December 1913, Richmond Hill, New York
  • Died 21 February 1996, Orlando, Florida
M orton Gould was a child prodigy, playing the piano at the age of 4 and published his first piece of music, a waltz titled, "Just Six," two years later. He performed frequently throughout his childhood, on radio and in concert and vaudeville halls. He graduated from Julliard before the age of 16 and was hired as staff arranger and pianist at Radio City Music Hall. In his early 20s, he moved to NBC radio and arranged and conducted the studio orchestra on a number of its regular shows. His composition "Pavanne" was written at this time and was widely performed and recorded. He got his own show showcasing "symphonic jazz" in 1939, and another series featuring general orchestral works in 1943. Throughout this time, he was also composing serious pieces on commissioned by such heavyweight conductors as Stokowski, Fritz Reiner, and Dmitri Mitropoulos. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including Kennedy Center Honors in 1994 and the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for his "Stringmusic," commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra and composed as a tribute to its music director, Mstislav Rostropovich.

Thank you for kind and flattering letter and interest
in my work.
I do not have any one particular "idol" as such.

have at different ages and stages, admired some more

never have been a puristso I cannot pick out one
particular composer, or kind of music, or esthetic philosophy, etc.
Sorry, I cannot be more specific. Anyway here are a few autograph notes instead. [music sample-see above] All best wishes to you, and your career. Morton Gould "Composing is my life blood," said Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Morton Gould. "That is basically me, and although I have done many things in my life - conducting, playing piano, and so on - what is fundamental is my being a composer." Capping a life full of achievements in all facets of music are Morton Gould's 1995 Pulitzer Prize for Stringmusic , commissioned by the National Symphony for the final season of music director Mstislav Rostropovich, and his 1994 Kennedy Center Honor in recognition of lifetime contributions to American culture. Born in Richmond Hill, New York, on 10 December 1913, Gould was recognized early on as a child prodigy with the ability to improvise and compose. At the age of six he had his first composition published. He studied at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School), but his most important teachers were Abby Whiteside (piano) and Vincent Jones (composition). During the Depression, Gould (still a teenager) found work in New York's vaudeville and movie theaters. When Radio City Music Hall opened, the young Gould was its staff pianist. By the age of 21 he was conducting and arranging a series of orchestral programs for WOR Mutual Radio. Gould attained national prominence through his work in radio, as he appealed to a wide-ranging audience with his combination of classical and popular programming. During the 1940s Gould appeared on the "Cresta Blanca Carnival" program and "The Chrysler Hour" (CBS), reaching an audience of millions.

Gould, Morton (1913-1996)
Morton Gould was born in New York in December 1913, and was educated at the New York Institute of Musical Art. At the age of 21 he was engaged to conduct and arrange a series of light music programmes for radio, and was soon in demand for cinema and theatre work. He was to enjoy a dual career in both 'serious' and 'light' music, drawing much of his inspiration from musical and visual American themes. Already enjoying considerable success, in 1947 he wrote an orchestral arrangement of the folk song When Johnny comes Marching home, calling is American Salute . It became the most frequently performed 20 th century American symphonic work.
Gould was to equally enjoy a career as a conductor, working with all the major American symphony orchestras, recording with a number of them the symphonic repertoire. He wrote a sizeable catalogue of music, including musical comedies, though his main field of work was in orchestral compositions, and included three works he described as American Symphonettes , which was Gould's light music symphony.
