Went to Prague Univ. in 1732 to study mus. and philosophy, also learning vc. In 1735 travelled to Vienna under protection of Prince Lobkowitz. Joined private orch. of Prince Melzi, who engaged him for his orch. in Milan 1737. There he probably studied with Sammartini. Wrote his first opera Artaserse , 1741, 7 more following up to 1744. Travelled with Prince Lobkowitz to London 1745, composing 2 operas prod. 1746, meeting Handel, and giving 2 concerts as performer on glass armonica. After 1746 travelled in Austria and Denmark and again visited Prague and Naples. His series of reform operas moved music away from the usual practices of the day, in which the interests of singers were the most important considerations. He felt that music should serve poetry by means of expression and follow the situations of the story without interrupting the action. He therefore replaced the endless recitatives with orchestral accompaniments, which helped improve the dramatic flow. In 1762 his Orfeo ed Euridice/Orpheus and Eurydice revolutionized the 18th-century idea of opera by paying more attention to the dramatic aspects of opera and less attention to the formal musical aspects. It was followed by Alceste/Alcestis (1767) and Paride ed Elena/Paris and Helen In 1774 his Armide (1777) and (1779), Gluck won a complete victory over Piccini.

Zoon van een houtvester, zou het ouderlijk huis zijn ontvlucht en als reizend muzikant terecht zijn gekomen in Praag, waar hij zich ca. 1731 liet inschrijven aan de universiteit. De Oostenrijkse vorst Lobkowitz stelde hem in staat zich in 1736 te Wenen te vestigen, waar een Italiaanse prins, Antonio Melzi, zijn mecenas werd en hem in de leer deed bij Sammartini In Milaan ontwikkelde Gluck zich tot operacomponist en in 1741 werd zijn eerste opera, Artaserse, opgevoerd. Deze opera en de andere die spoedig volgden, oogstten zoveel succes dat Gluck diverse opdrachten kreeg en in 1745 uitgenodigd werd in Londen. Van 1746 tot 1752 was hij verbonden aan een operagezelschap dat in Pillnitz bij Dresden en in Wenen opera's van hem opvoerde; daarna trad hij als kapelmeester van de theatergroep van Mingotti op in Kopenhagen, Praag en Napels. In 1750 trad hij in het huwelijk met de 16-jarige Marianne Pergin en twee jaar later vestigde hij zich in Wenen.

To Ranieri Calzabigi, the librettist of Orfeo and also Alceste (1767), Gluck gave much of the credit for his new operatic style. In 1773, Gluck went to Paris, where his first serious opera with a French libretto, (1774), was performed. That and subsequent productions created much controversy between supporters of Gluck and proponents of traditional Italian opera. His last important work, (1779), is often considered his masterpiece, and it firmly established his reputation. Eventually, Gluck's emphasis on dramatic impact and musical simplicity became incorporated into the French operatic tradition, and his influence on later composers was considerable.
