Program Notes by Enoch Moser Mikhail Glinka Born June 1, 1804 Novospasskoye, Russia Died February 15, 1857 Berlin, Germany Russlan and Ludmilla: Overture Glinka's opera Russlan and Ludmilla is based on a charming and satirical fairy tale by Alexander Pushkin. He completed the score in April, 1842 after working on it sporadically for six years. Its music is drawn largely from Russian folk music. Many misfortunes befell the work's premiere which took place on December 9, 1842. The show was hissed by the audience, and the critics gave it bad reviews. During Glinka's lifetime, and for years afterward, audiences did not appreciate the work. Today Russlan and Ludmilla is recognized to be the composer's masterpiece. The work was a pioneer of Russian nationalism and in a single stroke cast the style of modern Russian music. Glinka's complex and detailed melodies, harmonies, rhythms, form, instrumentation and style all became the musical language which Russian composers would speak for the next hundred years. The Overture to Russlan and Ludmilla is now in the standard concert repertoire of bands and orchestras. Its contrapuntal effects and rushing scale passages are excitingly reminiscent of Mozart and Weber.

En 1817 ingresa en el Instituto Pedagógico de San Petersburgo, donde recibe clases de piano (con Field, Aumann y Zeuner), teoría (Fuchs), y violín (Böhm). Acabado los estudios, se traslada a Italia en 1830 por motivos de salud. Allí residirá durante tres prósperos años: estudia en el Conservatorio de Milán, entrando en contacto con la música de Donizetti y Bellini ; consigue un contrato con Ricordi para editar su música y conoce a Felix Mendelssoh n-Bartholdy y Hector Berlioz En 1833 se traslada a Berlín donde estudia contrapunto con Siegfried Dehn. Al año siguiente regresa a Rusia por la muerte de su padre; allí permanece más de lo que tenía previsto y comienza a interesarse por la música rusa.
