    Philip Glass - respected composer:
Philip Glass has built an enormous reputation among musicians and audiences alike. He has been writing concert works for a variety of orchestral forces from solo instruments up to orchestras. His style clearly defines him as a modern composer and, along with John Cage and others, his work received some attention in the book "Experimental Music" by Michael Nyman . The relationship between the two composers goes deeper than this, because in some ways Glass was a leading light in the minimalist movement which was documented and named by Nyman before he himself became its foremost practitioner. Another curious coincidence (or is it?) is that the director Peter Greenaway created the documentary series "Four American Composers", one of whom was Philip Glass. Greenaway's film music is invariably scored by none other than Michael Nyman. Another example of film scoring for reduced instrumental forces (in this case a classical String Quartet) is his re-scoring of the original "Dracula" film starring Bela Lugosi. In this case, the restricted string timbre seems to perfectly complement the black and white images, and it's tempting to compare this decision with Bernard Herrmann 's string orchestra on Psycho. Much of the music for "Dracula" consists of repeated figures such as arpeggios which sometimes serve as accompaniment to a simple melodic line, though the music breaks into counterpoint for the Death of Dracula near the end of the movie. It is interesting to compare Glass's approach with that of

Kronos Quartet performs Philip Glass > Customer Review #1: Transcendant!

These quartets are, in my opinion, some of the most satisfying music Glass has composed. As a lover of many composers and styles, from Steely Dan to Bjork to Wayne Shorter to Villa Lobos, I must admit that the Glass String Quartet #5 is one of my favorite pieces of music. Rarely does "minimal" music deliver such emotion. Kronos Quartet once again produces a passionate, inimitable performance, and the sound quality is wonderful. This is a disc I rarely travel without.
Kronos Quartet performs Philip Glass > Customer Review #2: An Ocean of Sound The string quartets are Philip Glass at his most intimate and emotional. They also represent Glasss most traditional, "classical" work. Though some of the themes and motifs of the quartets (most obviously in Company and Buzcak) are familiar, the fifth quartet is a searing work: vibrant and colorful; among the most beautiful pieces Glass has ever written.

Glass, Philip Born: Baltimore, 31 Jan 1937
    Nationality: American composer
He studied at the Juilliard School and with Boulanger in Paris (1964-6) and worked with the Indian musicians Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha. His minimalist works of 1965-8 (e.g. "Two Pages") are 'experimental and exploratory' but later ones, for his own amplified ensemble, are more complicated (e.g. "Music in Fifths"). Since 1975 his works have nearly all been for the theatre. When "Einstein on the Beach" was given at the Met (1976) he became famous; further full-scale operas, "Satyagraha" (1980), "Akhnaten" (1984), "The Making of the Representative for Planet 8" (1988) and "The Voyage" (1992), chamber operas and music theatre works followed. One of the most popular serious composers in the USA, he has also performed in rock and jazz.

Kundun: Music From The Original Soundtrack > Customer Review #1: this Glass guy is really getting to me

I used to HATE Philip Glass. I thought, how can such a no-talent hack get work all he does is make the same music and recycle it! Then I saw Koyanasqatsi and Powaqqatsi. Powaqqatsi really impressed me, particularly because of the music. I saw the CD sitting in a record store one day, and bought it (the clerk even forgot to charge me for it!) Not less than a week ago I wrote a five-star review of the excellent Powaqqatsi soundtrack, relaying how great I thought the music was while knock, knocking Philip Glass for his repetition. After that I began browsing through the other Glass listings, listening to the samples. Later, I saw the Kundun DVD at my video store, and decided to watch it again. The next day, I searched out the soundtrack. I have to take back the statement I made about never having to hear another Glass score. Granted, all of his music seems to be variations of a similar theme, but he can take that in many directions. Kundun has an entirely different feel than Powaqqatsi. It is meditative, while Powaqqatsi is like a celebration of life. I own two Glass albums now, and now it seems likely that Ill own three (the Glass/Shankar collaboration looks appealing). I wouldnt have been able to fathom that a year ago.

Discussion Johnson House, "The Glass House" Commentary "Philip Johnson, one of the early advocates of the Modern Movement in the United States and one of the first architects to point to its shortcomings in the fifties, designed, in his own Glass House, one of the world's most beautiful yet least functional houses; it was never envisioned as a 'home' (house) to live in but a life-style stage to live with. Ostensibly entirely in l'esprit nouveau of the Modern Movement, it was a building really expressing many concerns of classic design, from the elevated placement of an object in a space, to its serene proportion, general overall symmetry, and combining of a balance of elements with a meticulous refinement of detail...." The Creator's Words "...Comfort is not a function of beauty... purpose is not necessary to make a building beautiful...sooner or later we will fit our buildings so that they can be used...where form comes from I don't know, but it has nothing at all to do with the funcitional or sociological aspects of our architecture."
