Born in Baltimore on January 31, 1937, Philip Glass discovered music in his father's radio repair shop. In addition to servicing radios, Ben Glass carried a line of records and, when certain ones sold poorly, he would take them home and play them for his three children, trying to discover why they didn't appeal to customers. These happened to be recordings of the great chamber works, and the future composer rapidly became familiar with Beethoven quartets, Schubert sonatas, Shostakovich symphonies and other music then considered 'offbeat.' It was not until he was in his upper teens did Glass begin to encounter more 'standard' classics. Glass began the violin at six and became serious about music when he took up the flute at eight. But by the time he was 15, he had become frustrated with the limited flute repertoire as well as with musical life in post-war Baltimore. During his second year in high school, he applied for admission to the University of Chicago, passed and, with his parent's encouragement, moved to Chicago where he supported himself with part-time jobs waiting tables and loading airplanes at airports. He majored in mathematics and philosophy, and in off hours practiced piano and concentrated on such composers as Ives and Webern.

In the past two decades years, American composer Philip Glass has become a prominent and unique figure in the international music world. Writing operas, orchestral and choral works and music for film, theatre, dance and The Philip Glass Ensemble (which has toured over fifty cities worldwide), Glass has brought his creative vision to a diverse and ever growing audience.
His collaboration with Robert Wilson, Einstein on the Beach (1976), has proved to be one of the seminal music theatre works of our time. This work, the first in Glass's 'portrait' trilogy, was followed by Satyagraha , created for the Netherlands Opera in 1980, and Akhnaten , for the Stuttgart Opera in 1984. Other operas and music theatre works include The Photographer (1980), the CIVIL warS (1984),The Juniper Tree (1986),The Making of the Representative for Planet 8 (1988), The Fall of the House of Usher (1988), Hydrogen Jukebox (1990), The Voyage (1992) commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in honour of Columbus and, most recently, a chamber opera Orph©e (1993) based on the film by Jean Cocteau.
Philip Glass is also known for his collaborations with some of the major figures in today's dance world, including Twyla Tharp and Lucinda Childs (A Descent into the Maelstrom, In the Upper Room). In 1988, Glass made his directing debut with the science fiction music drama 1000 Airplanes on the Roof, written with David Henry Hwang. He has also composed music for an eclectic group of films, including Gedfrey Reggio's Koyaanisqatsi and Powaqqatsi, Paul Schrader's Mishima, and two documentaries by Errol Morris: The Thin Blue Line and A Brief History of Time.

Introduction (born Baltimore, 31 January 1937). He studied at the Juilliard School and with Boulanger in Paris (1964-6) and worked with the Indian musicians Ravi Shankar and Alla Rakha. His minimalist works of 1965-8 (e.g. Two Pages ) are 'experimental and exploratory' but later ones, for his own amplified ensemble, are more complicated (e.g. Music in Fifths ). Since 1975 his works have nearly all been for the theatre. When Einstein on the Beach was given at the Met (1976) he became famous; further full-scale operas, Satyagraha Akhnaten The Making of the Representative for Planet 8 (1988) and The Voyage (1992), chamber operas and music theatre works followed. One of the most popular serious composers in the USA, he has also performed in rock and jazz. Extracted with permission from

    Philip Glass
PHILIP GLASS Biography Yo-Yo Ma , who is soloist throughout the score. At 19, Glass graduated from the University of Chicago with majors in mathematics and philosophy. Determined to become a composer, he moved to New York and attended the Juilliard School. By then he had abandoned the 12-tone techniques he had been using in Chicago and began gravitating toward American composers like Aaron Copland and William Schuman. In Paris, he was hired by a filmmaker to transcribe the Indian music of Ravi Shankar into notation readable to Western musicians. In the process, he discovered the techniques of Indian music. After researching music in North Africa, India and the Himalayas, he returned to New York, renouncing his previous music, and applying Eastern techniques to his own work. By 1974, Glass had composed a large collection of new music for both the Mabou Mines Theater Company that Glass co-founded and for his own performing group, the Philip Glass Ensemble. This period culminated in Music in 12 Parts, a three-hour summation of Glass' new music. In 1976 Glass reached an apogee in his collaboration with Robert Wilson, creating the opera Einstein on the Beach, a five-hour epic that is now seen as a landmark in 20th-century music theater. Glass then decided to make Einstein part of a trilogy that resulted in the creation of the operas Satyagraha and Akhnaten. In 2000, Glass premiered Concerto Fantasy for Two Timpanists and Orchestra at Avery Fisher Hall in New York City and In the Penal Colony, a musical theater work based on the short story by Kafka and commissioned by A Contemporary Theater, Seattle. In 2001, he premiered Voices for Organ, Didgeridoo, and Narrator, commissioned by the City of Melbourne Australia; Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, commissioned for Julian Lloyd Webber's 50th birthday, at the Beijing Festival; and Dancissimo, commissioned by the Milwaukee Art Museum.

    Glass, Philip (1937 - )
The American composer Philip Glass has enjoyed a degree of popularity unusual among contemporary composers. A pupil of Nadia Boulanger, he was influenced too by the Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar and has won a reputation as an exponent of minimalism, based on the systematic repetition of a motif, modified or extended. Stage Works Glass has won particular favour in some quarters for his stage works Einstein on the Beach, in collaboration with Bob Wilson, Satyagraha and Akhnaten. A more recent theatrical piece is Hydrogen Jukebox.
