Orlando Gibbons
O ne of the last great polyphonic english composers, Orlando Gibbons was the last of four sons of a family of musicians. Born in Oxford in 1583 to William Gibbons, who was appointed a wait at Cambridge in 1567, Orlando soon became heavily involved in church music. His eldest brother, Edward was a priest vicar at Exeter Cathedral where a few of his compositions still remain.
E llis, another brother, managed to have two madrigals published in Thomas Morley's collectin o 1601, The Triumphs of Oriana.
O rlando surpassed them all.
I n 1695 at the age of 12 he became a chorister at King's College Cambridge . At King's he was continuously envolved in the music of the royal College, and a few times he recieved money for compositions written for special occasions.
I n 1606 he achieved his Bachelaureate in Music, after being appointed organist to the Chapel Royal at the age of 21; a position he retained for life.

Orlando Gibbons
Orlando Gibbons, born in Oxford, came of a musical family, like his near contemporary, Thomas Tomkins . His father William (c. 1540-1595) was appointed one of the waits at Cambridge in 1567, a fact which, at this time, would indicate that he was a singer or instrumentalist, or both. Orlando's brothers Edward (c. 1570-c. 1650) and Ellis
Gibbons' lifetime corresponded to the highest point in English music - a time when it dominated the music of the continent as it had never done before and would barely do since - moreover, he was known for 'the best finger of that age.' His position among the private musicians of Prince Charles (later King Charles I) helped to inaugurate one of the greatest eras in chamber music that Western music has seen. Together with his colleagues, the composers Alfonso Ferrabosco II John Coprario , and Thomas Lupo , Gibbons pioneered new scorings and approaches in consort music which would lead to a repertory eclipsed in volume and depth only by the works of the Viennese School. It was presumably due largely to his influence that organ accompaniment became standard in consort works, otherwise for strings.

Orlando Gibbons English Renaissance Composer Orlando Gibbons was born in 1583 in Oxford, England. Gibbons' family had a musical background as his father was a trained musician. It was Orlando's father who gave him his first music lesson. By 1596 his family had moved to Cambridge and Gibbons was placed in the choir of King's College. At the surprisingly young age of 21, Gibbons was appointed the organist of the Chapel Royal in London. The achievement of this prestigious position so early in his career is a testament to the esteem he had gained as an organist. He maintained this position for the rest of his life. Gibbons graduated from Oxford in 1606 and was married in the same year. Sometime during this same period Gibbons published some signific ant instrumental music. The pieces were a set of nine fantasias for three viols. Between 1512 and 1513 Gibbons was also involved in the first exclusive compilation of virginal music published in England. The collection was entitled Parthenia and Gibbons contributed several pieces including his best known keyboard composition

    Gibbons, Orlando (1583 - 1625)
Orlando Gibbons belongs to the generation of English composers that followed that of William Byrd, forty years his senior, who had died in 1623. He was a chorister at King's College, Cambridge, where his elder brother was Master of the Choristers, and later became a gentleman of the Chapel Royal, which he served as an organist and to which he later added the position of organist at Westminster Abbey. He wrote music for the Church of England, madrigals, consort music and keyboard works. Church Music Gibbons wrote some forty anthems. Of these the verse anthem This is the record of John is one of the best known. The verse anthem, a peculiarly Anglican form of church music, contrasts a solo voice with passages for full choir. The eight-voice full anthem O clap your hands is a fine example of another form of anthem, without the use of solo voices. Other full anthems include Hosanna to the son of David and Lift up your heads, while the Christmas anthem Behold, I bring you glad tidings, with Glorious and powerful God and Sing unto the Lord, o ye saints, are fine examples of the verse anthem. Gibbons was born in Oxford, and held positions as Organist of the Royal Chapel, as keyboard player in the privy chamber of the all-important court of Prince Charles, and finally as organist at Westminster Abbey. He died an early death at Canterbury Cathedral, while awaiting the arrival of the new Queen Henrietta Maria. Gibbons' lifetime corresponded to the highest point in English music. His position among the private musicians of Prince Charles (later King Charles I) helped to inaugurate one of the greatest eras in chamber music that Western music has seen. It was presumably due largely to his influence that organ accompaniment became standard in consort works, otherwise for strings. Gibbons is also well-known for his sacred choral music, of which he left a substantial volume. He was among the first major English choral composers schooled entirely in the Protestant universe, and his highly polished English anthems are among the finest in the repertory. He is still regarded as one of the great masters of the verse anthem, in which sections for full choir alternate with passages for soloists and organ (or viol consort) accompaniment.
