Carlo Gesualdo , a composer of the Renaissance, can hold one more candle to his flame : he murdered his wife and her lover. Carlo Gesualdo was born around 1560 in Naples, Italy into an old Neopolitan family, becoming prince of Venosa . He was the second son of Fabrizio II Gesualdo and Girolama Borromeo . His family were feudal landowners with extensive property; they owned a castle in the village of Gesualdo , a second castle in Venosa , and a palace in Naples In 1584 Gesualdo's older brother died, leaving him heir to their parent's large estate and holder of responsibility to carry on the family line. Within the next year Gesualdo married his cousin Maria d'Avalos . In a few years time young Maria began an affair with Fabrizio Carafa , the Duke of Andria . He wrote a quantity of sacred and secular vocal music and a relatively small number of instrumental pieces. In style his music is unexpected in its sudden changes of tonality, its harmony and its intensity of feeling, qualities that have found particular favour among some modern theorists. Secular Vocal Music Gesualdo, a nobleman of melancholy reserve, published six books of madrigals, the second of them originally under an improbable pseudonym. These include some remarkable and striking compositions, such as the five-voice Moro, lasso, al mio duolo, and the earlier Ahi, disperata vita. Sacred Vocal Music Gesualdo's numerous sacred compositions include works intended for the liturgy of Good Friday and Holy Saturday, as well as Marian compositions such as Ave, dulcissima Maria and Ave, regina caelorum. Standard reference literature often states "circa 1560 or 1561" as his birth date. In any case, Gesualdo is known to have died September 8, 1613. He was born into an old and noble Neapolitan family and was the nephew of Saint Charles Borromeo. He became interested in music as a youth and began composing conservative madrigals and sacred works. His personal life, however, was not so conservative. In 1590 he arranged for the murder of his adulterous wife, the lovely Maria d'Avalos, and her lover. Although he was never brought to justice for these acts, the scandal was enormous and many a poet of the time wrote stanzas proclaiming the misfortune of Maria d'Avalos. Prince Of Pain: The Strange Case Of Carlo Gesualdo - by Chris Blackford Gesualdo, or to give him his full title, Duke Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, was probably born in 1564 (though some scholars set the date at 1560 or 61), the second son of Fabrizio II Gesualdo and Girolama Borromeo. The Gesualdos were feudal landowners with a modest castle in the Italian village of Gesualdo (60 miles from Naples), a larger one in the ancient town of Venosa, plus a palace in Naples. While details of Carlo's early life are scarce, it is known that he published a competent motet in 1585; yet, five years later he would become better known, indeed notorious, for his extra-musical activities. MARRIAGE AND MURDER In 1584, his elder brother died, leaving Carlo with the responsibility of continuing the Gesualdo line. A year later he married (after gaining papal permission) his first cousin Maria d'Avalos who, it seems, within a few years had begun an affair with a young nobleman, the Duke of Andria. Now, Giulio Gesualdo, one of Carlo's uncles, also fancied Maria but his advances were rejected. Consequently, Giulio informed Carlo of his wife's suspicious meetings with the Duke. In what appears to have been a cunningly laid trap, Carlo left Naples on a hunting trip saying he would be away overnight, only to return unexpectedly to catch his wife and the Duke naked in bed in flagrante delicto The lovers were brutally murdered, if not by Carlo Gesualdo himself, then certainly by others acting on his instructions.
