Edward Marczewski attended the Batory Secondary School in Warsaw, a school named after Stefan Batory who was king of Poland from 1575 to 1586. He graduated from the school in 1925 and entered the Department of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Warsaw. At the University of Warsaw he was taught by Kuratowski who was teaching the first year calculus course that Marczewski attended. Kuratowski writes in [1]:- ... during the first tutorials in that subject calculus he attracted my attention by his extraordinary ingenuity. The audience then was exceptionally large about persons , the largest in the pre-war period; Marczewski was the best. Kuratowski directed Marczewski's studies and gave him much personal attention. However it was two other mathematicians at the University of Warsaw who influenced Marczewski more than Kuratowski . These were Mazurkiewicz and Sierpinski who interested Marczewski in measure theory and related topics. Remaining at the University of Warsaw to study for his doctorate under Sierpinski's supervision, he submitted his thesis in 1932. He had remained interested in collaborating with

The German Phoenix Rises
Article # : Section : THE ARTS Issue Date : 2,165 Words Author : Jason Edward Kaufman
For years, America was an exporter of contemporary art. American styles such as Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism, and Conceptualism set the agenda in postwar Europe. In recent years, however, the tide has turned. The early 1980s saw the influx of Italian Neo-Expressionism in American galleries, followed by a wave of new German painters that has rapidly taken the country by storm. What began with a smattering of exhibitions in prominent New York City galleries in 1981-82 has developed into the hottest phenomenon in America's contemporary art scene.
Critics, at first less than enthusiastic about the new German painting, have now largely endorsed it. American museums have offered numerous surveys and one-artist shows, the most recent of which are Refigured Painting: The German Image 1960-88, The BiNATIONALE: German Art of the Late 80s, and retrospectives of the careers of Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter. Sigmar Polke and George Baselitz shows are in the planning stages in San Francisco and New York, indicating that the trend is by no means over.

http://statelibrary.dcr.state.nc.us/nc/bio/literary/murrow.htm
Edward R. Murrow
Edward R. Murrow set the standard for television journalism that continues to challenge and inspire today's television newspersons. His calm and courageous reporting captured our nation's and the world's attention during the German Blitz of Great Britain in 1940 and 1941 and remained firm while confronting the paranoia of McCarthyism at home in 1954. Although a figure of great importance in journalism, Murrow hailed from modest beginnings near Polecat Creek in Guilford County, North Carolina. Born in the neighborhood of another famous North Carolinian, O. Henry, Edward R. Murrow was born as Egbert Roscoe Murrow on April 25, 1908. The Murrow homestead stood in a Society of Friends community, and Roscoe and Ethel Murrow enforced the Quaker prohibition of smoking, drinking, and gambling upon their children. Murrow worked the family farm with his brothers Dewey and Lacey and enjoyed listening to his grandfathers' memories of their Civil War experiences at Gettysburg and Manassas. The Murrow family moved to Blanchard, Washington when Egbert was six, seeking a more prosperous life in the lumber industry. The family returned to Guilford County after a year, but in 1925 once again relocated to Washington. His early years near Greensboro held pleasant memories for Murrow who would make frequent returns to his piedmont home throughout his life. Murrow began his collegiate career in 1926 and set in motion a series of important events that would mold him into a great journalist. He attended three separate universities: Leland Stanford University, the University of Washington, and Washington State College. By the time he graduated, Egbert R. Murrow had changed his name to Edward R. Murrow. Aside from working while enrolled at Washington State, Murrow was class president and top cadet of the university's ROTC program. Murrow was also an active member of the National Student Federation (NSF).

12th Armored Division
I am Edward F. Seiller. During World War II I was a lieutenant colonel on the General Staff of Major General Roderick R. Allen, who commanded the 12th Armored Division of the United States Army. I was G-5, chief of the Military Government Staff Section. My section included four officers and a number of enlisted men. My duties were to advise General Allen and to supervise civil affairs and military government in the division area. I was one of the first officers to enter Kaufering Lager (Camp) No. 4 near Landsberg, Germany. We were in the Landsberg area about 27 April 1945. My duties did not allow me to spend much time in either Kauffering Lager No. 4 or the other camps we (and the 14th Infantry Division) liberated near Landsberg, Germany. For example, among my duties were the appointing of a Burgermeister for each town we took, posting rules at the city hall for the inhabitants to observe, and supervising the town's government, so long as it was in our jurisdiction. General Allen was the Military Governor of the territory we captured. Those who had been in charge of the local government, and places such as Landsberg, shed their positions as best they could, seeking to be relieved of having to account for their stewardship in their communities. Of course, we didn't want any Nazi officials in charge. When the American Army began to move, it moved very rapidly. Some of our units got mixed up with the units of the divisions on each side of us. The Commanding General of the VI Corps, which included the 12th Armored Division, wanted us to continue to push rapidly forward, but General Allen felt we needed to slow down somewhat in order to realign and regroup forces. As a result, we were fighting in the vicinity of Landsberg for about three days.

22 January 1915
Letter from Theodore Roosevelt to Sir Edward Grey
To me the crux of the situation has been Belgium. If England or France had acted toward, Belgium as Germany has acted I should have opposed them, exactly as I now oppose Germany. I have emphatically approved your action as a model for what should be done by those who believe that treaties should be observed in good faith and that there is such a thing as international morality. I take this position as an American; who is no more an Englishman than he is a German, who endeavors loyally to serve the interest of his own country, but who also endeavors to do what he can for justice and decency as regards mankind at large and who therefore feels obliged to judge all other nations by their conduct on any given occasion. I do not think you need to have me show a precedent for writing you; but, if you do, I shall ask you to turn to young Trevelyan's "Life of John Bright," pages 314 to 316. Bright was writing to Sumner at the time, when the bulk of the leading English politicians, from Palmerston and Derby to Gladstone and the editor of "The Times," were more or less openly hostile to the cause of the American Union and the freeing of the slaves. Bright's letters were written to Sumner in order that they could be read aloud by Lincoln to his Cabinet, which was actually done. He was afraid the United States would drift into war with England. His letters run in part as follows; "You know that I write to you with as much earnest wish for your national welfare as if I were a native and resident of your country. I need not tell you, who are much better acquainted with modern history than I am, that nations drift into wars. I fervently hope that you may act firmly and courteously (towards England). Any moderate course you may take will meet with great support here. I have no doubt you will be able to produce strong cases from English practice in support of your actions, but I doubt if any number of these will change opinion here. You must put the matter in such a shape as to save your honor and to put our Government in the wrong if they refuse your propositions.
