Edward VII was brought up strictly under a very rigorous educational regime by his parents, who had unrealistic expectations of his abilities. During his mother's reign, he undertook public duties (including working on Royal Commissions in the field of social issues), but he was excluded by his mother from acting as her deputy until 1898. Edward was 59 when he became king, having been heir apparent for longer than anyone else in British history. Criticised for his social life, Edward's main interests lay in foreign affairs, and military and naval matters. Fluent in French and German, Edward made a number of visits abroad (in 1904, he visited France - a visit which helped to create the atmosphere which made the subsequent Anglo-French entente cordiale possible); he was related to nearly every Continental sovereign and came to be known as the 'Uncle of Europe'. Edward also played an active role in encouraging military and naval reforms, pressing for the reform of the Army Medical Service and the modernisation of the Home Fleet.
In the last year of his life he was involved in the constitutional crisis brought about by the refusal of the Conservative majority in the Lords to pass the Liberal budget of 1909. The King died before the situation could be resolved by the Liberal victory in the election in 1910.

Webmaster's note: The book you are about to read is truly a one-of-a-kind classic, for a sad reason - much of the irreplaceable source material that the author consulted was destroyed by Allied bombs during World War Two. For that reason, it is an indispensable reference to the researcher, and as you can see, its scope makes it an excellent starting point for the casual historian.
    THE HESSIANS

GERMAN AUXILIARIES OF GREAT BRITAIN IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR
    by
    Edward J. Lowell
    Harper and Brothers Publishers
New York1884 PREFACE English by William L. Stone, Esq., who has also translated that part of Eelking's "Life of Riedesel" which relates to the Revolutionary War. In preparing the following book, I cannot claim to have used nearly all the very voluminous stores contained in the libraries and archives of Germany. I have, however, found original German accounts of every important engagement, and of almost every skirmish of the Revolutionary War, from the year 1776 to the end, except of some of those battles which occurred in the Carolinas and Georgia, and in which few, if any, Germans were engaged. Some of these accounts, I believe, had never yet fallen under the eye of an American writer. The reader will find in this book many passages which belong rather to biography or to anecdote than to history. The adventures of comparatively unimportant persons, such as Wiederhold, Ewald, or Baroness Riedesel are related at some length. It has been my object to give an idea of what sort of people the auxiliaries were, and of what impression America and the Americans made upon them. To this end I have not hesitated to introduce apparently trivial matter, where it has seemed characteristic, nor to quote opinions or descriptions which, though genuine, were mistaken.

Father of the Hydrogen Bomb INTERVIEW
      September 30, 1990
      Palo Alto, California
When did you first realize that you were interested in your subject? When I was maybe five years old, maybe not yet five years old, it is one of my earliest memories. I was supposed to go to sleep and didn't, and I invented a game. I was trying to find out how many seconds in an hour, or in a day, or in a year. And that, of course, obviously, I did it in my head. Quite naturally, I got different answers in my head every time I did it. And that made the game more interesting. I don't know how unique it is; I don't know how many other children did that, but I played with numbers. I was taught German and Hungarian at the same time. The earliest words I remember are a mixture of the two. My mother spoke German much better than Hungarian. My father's German was quite poor. His legal books, of course, were Hungarian. The literary books in our house were German. I am sure I must have been awfully confused about what all these people talked about, using different sounds for the same objects. I did not catch on!
The one thing with which I felt familiar, were numbers.

Father of the Hydrogen Bomb BIOGRAPHY b. January 15, 1908
      d. September 9, 2003
Edward Teller was born into an affluent, educated Jewish family in Budapest, Hungary. As one of the great cities of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Budapest was part of a larger central European world of predominantly German language and culture. Edward was only ten when the First World War brought an end to the Empire. Hungary became independent for the first time in centuries. Young Edward was a mathematical prodigy, educated in private schools, but his education was frequently disrupted by the political turmoil engulfing the new nation. In 1926, Edward left Budapest to study chemical engineering in Karlsruhe, Germany. In Karlsruhe, Teller became intrigued by physics, particularly the new theory of quantum mechanics. The young chemical engineer transferred to the University of Munich in 1928 to pursue this interest. In Munich, disaster struck. A streetcar accident cost Teller his right foot. Once Teller had recovered from his injury and learned to walk with a prosthesis, he transferred to the University of Leipzig, to study with Werner Heisenberg, who was in the forefront of the new physics. Teller received his doctorate in physics in 1930 and took a job as research consultant at the University of Gottingen. His first published paper: "Hydrogen Molecular Ion," was one of the earliest statements of what is still the most widely held view of the molecule.

    Deutsche Version
by Jesus Ibarra Charles Edward, Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha Prince Leopold, Queen Victoria's youngest son, died on March 28, 1884 at Villa Nevada, Cannes, France; he suffered hemophilia and after having slipped and hit his right knee, he died of an hemorrage that same night. His wife, Prncess Helene of Waldeck and Pyrmont was pregnant; they have already one child, a daughter, Alice.
Leopold's posthumous son was born on July 19, 1884 at Claremont House in Exeter. He was named Charles Edward and he inherit his father title of Duke of Albany. Because of genetic laws of inheritance, he was not an haemophiliac like his father. Charles Edward was brought up in England, being educated at Eaton. When he was fifteen years old, in 1900, his uncle Alfred, Leopold's brother, died.of cancer. Alfred was first duke of Edinburgh; later on, he inherited the dukedom of Saxe Coburg and Gotha at the death of Prince Albert's brother, Duke Ernst. Alfred's only son had died in 1899 without issue, so it was decided that Charles Edward should inherit his uncle's dukedom. He went to live in Germany and became Duke of Saxe Coburg and Gotha. His mother, Princess Helen, said: "I have always tried to bring Charlie up as a good Englishman and now I have to turn him into a god German.
Charles Edward attended to Leichterfelde Miliatry Cadet School, the German equivalent to Sandhurst.. He married Victoria Adelheid of Schleswig Holstein, a niece of Kaiser Wilhelm's wife, Empress Augusta Victoria, in October 11, 1905. He was promoted to the rank of general in the German Army. His wife bore him five children: Hereditary Prince Johann Leopold, Princess Sibylla, Prince Hubertus, Princess Karoline Mathilde and Prince Fredrich Josias
