25. Bismarck, Prince Otto Edward Leopold Von
Article on the statesman and his role in german unification.
http://www.freegk.com/politics/bismarck_otto.php
Bismarck, Prince Otto Edward Leopold von
Bismarck, Prince Otto Edward Leopold von (1815-1898), Prusso-German statesman, who was the architect and first chancellor (1871-1890) of the German Empire.
UNIFICATION
That same year a bitter dispute between the Prussian government and Parliament over the size of the army reached an impasse. In 1861 Parliament had granted the government additional funds for reforms, but in 1862 it refused to do so without a reduction of compulsory military service from three to two years. King William I would not yield for fear that the draftees would be insufficiently imbued with conservative values; for that very reason, the liberal-dominated Parliament insisted on this concession.

27. O'Neill On Fahle/Engell
Review by edward R. O'Neill, of a 1997 anthology on Deleuze which was published in French and german. Examines each essay in turn.
http://www.film-philosophy.com/vol2-1998/n2oneill
Film-Philosophy ISSN 1466-4615 Edward R. O'Neill Apprehending Deleuze Apprehending Cinema _Der Film bei Deleuze/Le cinema selon Deleuze_ Edited by Oliver Fahle and Lorenz Engell Weimar/Paris: Verlag der Bauhaus-Universitat/Presses de la Sorbonne Nouvelle, 1997 ISBN 3-86068-060-9 (BUW) ISBN 2. 87854-143-X (PSN) 565 pages. Outline I. Introductory II. Top Drawer: Reading Deleuze A. Bellour on Deleuze B. Cinema as a Pedagogy of Perception C. A Deleuzian Reading of Deleuze D. Sign, Shot and POV E. Taking Deleuze Literarily III. Deleuze in Context A. Zeno, Bergson, Deleuze B. Appropriating Terms: Any-Space-Whatever C. Deleuze and The Event IV. Overviews A. Image vs. World. B. History Again. C. Miscellany V. How Not To Read a Text A. Peirce and Bergson B. Unjust Criticisms and Unfounded Comparisons VI. Conclusion 'We have always had a taste for universal history.' Gilles Deleuze, speaking of himself and Felix Guattari I. Introductory This volume gathers together revised versions of essays which were presented at a colloquium at the University of Bauhaus at Weimar in October 1995. The topic was Deleuze's two volumes on the cinema. Deleuze himself participated in the preparations for the conference, although he was not present for the conference itself; the editors do not make clear whether this 'participation' included the selection of participants or no. The editors believe the colloquium was the largest dedicated to Deleuze's cinema work to that date. The editors also point to the collegial atmosphere of the colloquium in an attempt, I feel, to apologize in advance for the relative inadequacy of certain entries vis-a-vis the others. While a generosity of spirit may be induced by the atmosphere of a social gathering, when holding a book in one's hand one tends to feel the author should have had a clear and meaningful purpose while writing it, and that the editors' duty was to guarantee the reader of the relative merits of each essay. This I feel could have been done with a stronger hand: it appears that all the papers from the colloquium were included, whereas a smaller number would have made up a stronger and more useful volume. After all, only a very few conferences publish the entire proceedings; more usually writers are left to fend for themselves in securing publication, and this volume inadvertently makes a case for the merits of the latter procedure over the former.

THE D'O YLY C ARTE O PERA C OMPANY Edward German Edward German (cond., 1902) [Born Whitchurch, Shropshire 17 Feb 1862, died London 11 Nov 1936] Edward German, full name Edward German Jones, studied the organ and violin at the Royal Academy of Music. He won the Charles Lucas Medal for composition in 1885, and in 1889 was appointed conductor of the Globe Theatre orchestra, where he provided incidental music for Richard Mansfield’s production of Richard III He went on to compose dance and incidental music for Henry Irving’s production of King Henry VIII as the Lyceum in 1892, as well as numerous other orchestral compositions for the stage and music festivals. While he had offered to compose an opera for Richard D’Oyly Carte in the early 1890s, the offer came to nothing, and German had virtually no experience in opera or choral music when he was asked by Carte to complete the score for The Emerald Isle following Arthur Sullivan’s death in November 1900. The opera had a modest run at the Savoy (205 perfomances from April to November 1901), but the music was critically acclaimed, and German was engaged to compose a work on his own. The opera with book by Basil Hood

The English Reformation
By Professor Andrew Pettegree Page 3 of 6 1. Strange turn of events 2. Initially, Henry defends the faith 3. A powerful reforming party emerges at Court 4. The new, insecure regime ... Print entire article A powerful reforming party emerges at Court As Henry's health failed in the last years of his life it became clear that his own actions had encouraged the growth of a powerful evangelical party at Court. On his death in 1547 they moved quickly to establish their supremacy in the regency government made necessary by the youth of the new king, Edward VI (1547-1553). So, the short reign of Edward VI saw a determined attempt to introduce a full Protestant church polity into England, modelled on that of the Swiss and German Reformed churches and driven on by a powerful alliance of Archbishop Cranmer and the Lord Protector, the Duke of Somerset. In the five years of the king's life, much was achieved: two evangelical Prayer Books, a new English order of service and the stripping of the remaining Catholic paraphernalia from the churches. But time was too short to put down roots. On Edward's death in 1553, the changes were reversed easily by his Catholic half-sister, Mary (1553-1558). Only Mary's devotion to the papacy (which threatened the continued possession of former monastic property in the hands of those who had purchased it from the crown), and her determination to marry her cousin, Philip of Spain, provoked a half-hearted reaction. English Protestantism was reduced once again to a persecuted remnant; many of its ablest figures taking refuge abroad, to avoid martyrdom - the fate of those whom remained behind.

What a pleasant surprise! Although this may not be the greatest of music, it is full of interest. These are late Victorian pieces and the titles reminded me of many pieces that I played as a boy with these simple titles such as Melody and Reverie While some listeners will waste time in trying to find influences of Chopin and Mendelssohn in these pieces they would do far better to simply listen to and enjoy them. The opening Valse Fantastique lives up to its name and is played with scintillating finger work. The
