Francesco Geminiani
Italian violinist, composer, and theorist. Probably a pupil of Lonati, Alessandro Scarlatti , and Corelli . He served the court at Lucca, 1707-10, and evidently led a theater orchestra in Naples, 1711. He arrived in England in 1714, performing at court in 1716 with Handel at the harpsichord. In 1726 he released concerto grosso arrangements and embellished versions of Corelli's op. 5 sonatas. He played in a cycle of twenty subscription concerts beginning on December 9, 1731; other public appearances were rare, however, his income deriving from royal patronage and teaching, with Festing , Dubourg, and Avison Concerti Grossi op. 5. His The Inchanted Forest was staged as a ballet-pantomime at Paris in 1754. The treatises on which his modern reputation rests appeared between 1748 and 1760; they include A Treatise on the Art of Good Taste in Music (London, 1749), The Art of Accompaniment (London, ca. 1754), and the famous The Art of Playing on the Violin (London, 1754). His final years were divided between England and Ireland, with his last documented public appearance on March 3, 1760; an observer praised the 72-year-old violinist's "fine and elegant taste, and the perfection of time and tune." A full account of his life is in Enrico Careri

BAROQUE COMPOSERS AND MUSICIANS Francesco Geminiani
Francesco Geminiani was born at Lucca, in Tuscany, in December 1687. At an early age he showed considerable talent on the violin after being taught by his father. Later he studied the violin under Carlo Ambrogio Lonati in Milan and then in Rome under the celebrated master, Corelli. It is also considered possible that he studied composition with Alessandro Scarlatti whilst staying in Naples. At the age of 20 he returned to his home town of Lucca where he played the violin in the Town Orchestra for three years. He then moved to Naples in 1711 to take up the position as Leader of the Opera Orchestra. By this time he had become recognized as a brilliant violin virtuoso; indeed the orchestra appears to have experienced some difficulty in following him due to his improvisational virtuosity, or, as the music historian Dr. Burney put it, "his unexpected accelerations and relaxations of measure". In 1714, he tried his fortune in England, where his brilliant violin playing immediately met with great success. London had become a major European music center, thanks in part to Handel, who had himself studied in Rome under Corelli and thus brought a measure of Italian musical style with him. Geminiani gained much support from the aristocracy and leading figures at the Royal Court, and was invited to play the violin before George I, accompanied at the harpsichord by no less than Handel. He soon established himself in London as the leading master of violin-playing, with his concerts, his published compositions, and his theoretical treatises, the first and most important being

Geminiani, Francesco 1687 - 1762)
The Italian violinist and composer Francesco Geminiani belongs to the generation of Bach and Handel. He studied in Rome with the violinist-composer Arcangelo Corelli and the opera-composer Alessandro Scarlatti. In 1714 he moved to London, where he soon established himself as a performer and composer, later publishing a number of theoretical works on performance techniques and on harmony. He visited Ireland on various occasions and died in Dublin in 1762. Chamber Music Geminiani published a number of sets of sonatas for violin and basso continuo, a chordal and a bass instrument, or for violin and harpsichord, a set of half a dozen sonatas for cello and harpsichord and twelve trio sonatas, for two violins, cello and harpsichord. These largely follow the example of his teacher Corelli. Concertos Again following the example of his teacher, Geminiani wrote a number of sets of Concerti grossi, works for string orchestra, with a small solo group consisting of two violins and basso continuo, with the addition of a viola, an instrument he omitted from the larger string ensemble. His arrangements of Corelli's Concerti grossi in this new form were particularly well received.
