Andrea Gabrieli, [Andrea di Cannaregio]
Organist and composer. Uncle of Giovanni Gabrieli . Almost nothing is known of his life before 1557, when he first tried (unsuccessfully) to become organist at St. Mark's, Venice. A lasting friendship with Lassus began during a trip to Germany in the early 1560s. A pupil of Adrian Willaert , he gained fame as a singer at St. Mark's and later was successful in becoming second organist there after Claudio Merulo . The position of organist at St. Mark's was his from 1566 until his death. His influence in the later 16th century was considerable, especially in Italy but also in Germany. His works are among the first by a native Venetian to escape the dominance of the Netherlandish style. Innovative techniques are found particularly in the ceremonial music composed after he took up his post at St. Mark's. Such music tends to be homophonic, largely syllabic, perhaps polychoral, and above all sonorous. His many compositions, in nearly every genre known at the time, include sacred vocal pieces (Masses, Psalms, motets, concerti); madrigals (eight books and many independent pieces); other secular vocal works of various types; and many instrumental compositions (canzonas, ricercars, intonationi, and toccatas), most for keyboard. Many of his works were first published posthumously, edited by Giovanni Gabrieli. He is remembered also as the teacher of Sweelinck

Other Information:
Most published sources list Andrea Gabrieli's dates as (c.1510 to 1585). Marty Morell, a 16th-century scholar of Italian vocal music, has contacted the dictionary to share some recent research on the life of Andrea Gabrieli. Many thanks to Marty Morell for his assistance in updating this record.
Gabrieli was probably born in 1532 or 1533. These new dates are based on a recently-discovered register that records Andrea Gabrieli's death on 30 August, 1585 at 'about 52 years of age.' His name appears as 'Andrea da Cannaregio' in documents of the time. Quick Facts
  • Italian Organist and Composer Once thought to have been a chorister at St. Mark's Basilica in 1536. His updated birth and death dates make this unlikely.

Gabrieli, Andrea E A E Pronunciation Key Gabrieli, Andrea c. 1510 , Italian organist and composer; possibly a pupil of Adrian Willaert. In 1536 he was a chorister at St. Mark's Cathedral, Venice, where, in 1566, he became organist at the second organ. He composed madrigals, motets, masses, and ricercari and canzones for organ. He was important in the development of multiple-choir technique, and he was the teacher of Hans Leo Hassler and of his nephew Giovanni Gabrieli [j O E concerto style, i.e., differentiation of choral and solo ensembles. His Sonata pian'e forte (pub. in Sacrae symphoniae, 1597), the first piece of printed instrumental music containing dynamic indications, and the indication of specific instrumentation in his posthumously published works represent the beginnings of modern orchestration. See studies by E. F. Kenton (1967) and D. Arnold (1979).

Gabrieli, Giovanni (c. 1558 - 1613)
Nephew of Andrea Gabrieli, organist at St. Mark's in Venice from 1566 until his death twenty years later, Giovanni Gabrieli was appointed to a permanent position at the same basilica in 1585, where he also served as organist until his death in 1613. His work as a composer represents the height of musical achievement in Renaissance Venice. Church Music Gabrieli continued the traditional cori spezzati techniques developed at St. Mark's during the century, contrasting different groups of singers and instrumentalists and making use of the spacial effects possible in the great basilica. His eight-part setting of the Jubilate, using double choir and brass, is characteristic of his style of writing. Instrumental Music The most widely known of Gabrieli's works is the Sonata pian' e forte, an eight-part composition for two four-part groups of wind instruments included in the Sacrae symphoniae of 1597, with a number of instrumental Canzoni for between six and sixteen parts. These works, and a quantity of compositions of a similar kind, including Toccatas and Ricercars, have provided an interesting repertoire for modern brass-players, although originally they were played by instruments that included sackbuts (the earlier form of trombone), cornetti (curved wooden instruments with a cup-shaped mouth-piece) and other instruments of the period.
