GERALD FINZI "…when the stars were shining, Fared I forth alone." Gerald Finzi epitomised much that was characteristic of English Music, Literature and Landscape. He was part of that generation of composers who came to maturity in the middle of the 20 th century. He was friends with Ralph Vaughan Williams, Edmund Rubbra, Howard Ferguson, Arthur Bliss and Robin Milford. He had a great love for literature and collected a valuable library of 17 th century books. With the help of his wife, Joy, he edited and prepared the literary remains of that tragic poet and composer Ivor Gurney. Finzi excelled in the setting of the English Language. He had an especial love for the poetry of Thomas Hardy and set many of his poems to music. His contribution to English Lieder was second to none. Finzi wrote two masterpieces - his Cello Concerto , completed in 1955 and his choral work Intimations of Immortality -a setting of words by William Wordsworth Finzi enjoyed the English countryside and this empathy is obvious in his music. His compositions are often bitter-sweet; there is always an awareness of the transience of life. This is the key to understanding his music.

Life
Born in London , son of an Italian Jewish father and a German Jewish mother, Finzi was to belie his heritage by becoming one of the most characteristically English composers of his generation, as well as an agnostic , which didn't prevent him from writing some inspired and imposing Christian choral music.
1901-1918: Childhood and youth
Finzi's father, a successful shipbroker, died when he was 7 years old, and the boy was educated privately. During World War I the family settled in Harrogate, and Gerald began music studies with the inspiring Ernest Farrar whose death on the Western front affected him deeply. During these formative years he also suffered the losses of three of his brothers. Such adversities contributed to Finzi's bleak outlook on life, but he found kindred spirits in the poetry of Thomas Traherne and his favourite poet Thomas Hardy whose poems, as well as those by

Finzi in the 1930's
photo: Herbert Lambert Introduction Gerald Finzi likened the creative artist to a 'coral reef insect, building his reef out of the transitory world around him and making a solid structure to last long after his own fragile and uncertain life'. 'Fragile' and 'uncertain' are the key words here; throughout his life Finzi was sharply aware of the frailty of existence; before he was 18 the deaths of his father, three brothers and his teacher, Ernest Farrar, had etched upon him life's uncertainty, and by 50 he knew himself that he was dying. This sense of transience is the most profound aspect of his art; it is heard in the exquisite cantata Dies natalis , and in the song sets A Young Man's Exhortation and Earth and Air and Rain , as well as his other songs setting Thomas Hardy, his favourite poet whose bleak fatalism accorded with his own view of the world. A further preoccupation which may be traced back to these traumatic years is the theme of adult experience tarnishing the innocent experience of childhood, manifest, for instance, in his large-scale setting of Wordsworth's Intimations of Immortality Finzi's music is rooted in the tradition of Elgar, Parry, Vaughan Williams and those composers in the opening decades of the century for whom, like Ivor Gurney, song writing was a principal means of expression. About two thirds of his music is vocal and this gives the clue to the most individual characteristic of Finzi's art - his response to words - which results in music that seems inevitably, and effortlessly, to be at one with the poet's thought. This bonding with the authors he set arose out of his remarkable knowledge of English literature, especially poetry. In his teens and as a young man he was introspective and solitary: books were his companions, and in authors like Hardy, Traherne and Wordsworth, he found kinship that shaped the ethos for his own life.

Finzi, Gerald (1901 - 1956)
Of Italian Jewish ancestry, Gerald Finzi was among the most English of composers, spending much of his life in the countryside of Hampshire and later near Newbury, where the string orchestra he founded became an important vehicle for the performance of his music. His interest in earlier English music and in English literature is largely reflected in his own music, which owes something to Parry, to his older contemporary Vaughan Williams and to Elgar. Orchestral Music Finzi's orchestral music includes a Clarinet Concerto and a Cello Concerto, with a Grand Fantasia and Toccata for piano and orchestra. Vocal and Choral Music Choral music by Finzi's demonstrates his wide knowledge of English literature, with settings of poems by near contemporaries such as Edmund Blunden and Robert Bridges and by the 17th century poets Crashaw, Traherne and Vaughan. His setting of Wordsworth's Intimation of Immortality was performed at the West of England Three Choirs Festival in 1950, while his Dies natalis, for soprano or tenor and string orchestra, setting poems by Traherne, was originally intended for the same festival in 1939. The cycle Let us garlands bring, settings of Shakespearian verses for baritone and piano was also arranged for baritone and string orchestra, and other groups of songs aptly set poems by Hardy.
