Research
Emphasis The Sandyland Experiment Field was established in 1952 to address the problems of dryland agriculture on the sandy soils of the Great Bend Prairie of South Central Kansas. In 1966, an irrigated quarter was added to demonstrate how producers might use water resources more efficiently and determine proper management practices for, and adaptability of, crops under irrigation on sandy soils. Research at the field has helped define adapted varieties/hybrids of wheat, soybeans, alfalfa grain sorghum, and corn. As irrigated production of corn, soybean, wheat, and alfalfa grew in importance, research determined proper management strategies for irrigation, fertilizer, pest control, and related cultural practices. Present research focuses on variety/hybrid evaluation, the evaluation of new pesticides for the area; the practicality of dryland crop rotations versus continuous wheat; corn nitrogen fertilizer requirements; reexamining accepted cultural practices for corn and grain sorghum; and the long-term effects of cropping systems on yield, soil conditions, and residue cover. Work is now underway to maximize the efficiency of irrigation inputs from both engineering and agronomic standpoints.

Flatford Mill is on the River Stour close to the Suffolk-Essex border. The Centre buildings, particularly the Mill and Willy Lott's House, are instantly recognisable since they feature in many paintings by John Constable. Only an hour from London and with excellent road and rail access, the Centre is at the end of a lane which has no through traffic. It offers visitors of all ages a much sought-after sense of tranquillity to complement a unique learning environment. The rich mosaic of lowland landscapes, wildlife habitats and places of historic interest in this beautiful part of East Anglia are all reflected in the Centre's wide-ranging programme of environment and art-based courses. Over 300 residential and day activities are offered each year for people of all ages.
Outdoor Classroom
Younger children at Key Stages 1 to 3 use the Centre grounds and local area as an 'outdoor classroom' for first-hand experiences of the environment. Being resident for a few nights also offers special opportunities to develop social skills and self-reliance.Students studying geography, biology and environmental science at GCSE, AS or A2 levels extend these experiences, investigating landscapes and habitats in greater depth to meet coursework requirements.

Sherwood Forest Plantation was the home of the 10th U.S. President John Tyler from 1842 until his death in 1862. Sherwood Forest Plantation has been the continuous residence of the Tyler family since the President purchased it in 1842. Known to be the longest frame house in America, it is over 300 feet long. Elegantly furnished with Tyler's possessions, it reflects the lifestyle of this mid-19th century Presidential family. Beautifully wooded landscape and 12 dependencies surround President Tyler's home. Sherwood Forest Plantation's grounds are open 9:00 am-5:00 pm daily. Located on State Rt. 5, 14501 John Tyler Highway, Charles City, VA. 30 minutes from Williamsburg and 45 minutes from Richmond. 804/282-1441. 3 miles west of the courthouse in Charles City County - Tyler Country. John Tyler was the first vice president to ascend to the presidency upon the death of 9th President, William Henry Harrison, who ironically, once owned Sherwood Forest Plantation for a time in the late 1700s. The plantation, first recorded in a 1616 land grant, was originally known as Smith's Hundred. The house, circa 1720, is a classic example of Virginia Tidewater design: big house, little house, colonnade, and kitchen. Harrison inherited part of the current Sherwood Forest plantation property in the late 18th century. It had several owners before Tyler purchased the home and its surrounding 1,600 acres in 1842. He bought the plantation from his cousin, Collier Minge, while he was still in the White House and renamed the plantation "Sherwood Forest" referring to his reputation as a political outlaw.

Great Brown Kingfisher ( Daceld gigantea ). John Gould. The Birds of Australia , 1840-48, vol.2, pl.18. Australian Museum Research Library The success of Gould's various business and scientific endeavours relied on an uninterrupted supply of bird specimens that had been collected from all around the world. A number of Gould's contemporaries suggest that he was more at home behind a desk sorting his bird skins than out in the bush collecting them. For much of his life, Gould gained access to material by working the international specimen trade and coordinating the activities of his employees and associates out in the field. However, Gould did venture out into the field himself. He spent a challenging 19 months in Australia, during one of its worst droughts, observing bird and mammal life in the wild and collecting thousands of specimens.
John and Elizabeth in Australia
Recognising the lack of any comprehensive publication on The Birds of Australia , John Gould sailed for Australia in May 1838 to collect data. His travelling party included his wife, eldest son, and his collector, John Gilbert. During their stay, John and Elizabeth Gould were separated for extended periods of time and their experiences are documented in their letters. While John was out in the field in Tasmania, New South Wales and South Australia, Elizabeth spent much of her time in Hobart

A conversation following the Death of John Field
From "The reluctant Messiah" by Sidney Field
My brother, John, died early in January, 1972. His death was totally unexpected and a great shock to me. John had been a photographer, a lover of adventure, women and wine, a mean of great Latin charm. He had known Krishnaji as long as I had, and had many times delighted him with his stories and personal adventures. Krishnaji had just arrived from Europe and was staying in Malibu at the home of Mrs. Zimbalist. I called him to give him the sad news, saying I wanted to see him, and he asked me to come the following day for lunch. He greeted me most affectionately. At the dining table I came right to the point: "Has John survived his bodily death in a subtler form? Yes or no?" There was a moment's silence. "My gut feeling," I went on, "is that he is here beside me, right now." "Of course he is, right here beside you," said Krishnaji. "He's very close to you, and will continue being close for some time." Two hours later we were still deep into the subject of death and the hereafter. He referred to that part of the personality that survives bodily death as an echo, instead of an astral body, as the Theosophists call it, the echo of the person who lived on earth, the duration of its life on the other side depending on the strength of the individual's earthly personality. "Dr. Besant's echo, for instance," he said, "will go on for a long time, for she had a very strong personality."

This is a long quote copied from pp. 117, 118 and pp. 135-157 from the book "The Reluctant Messiah" by Sidney Field, Paragon House, New York 1989, Edited by Peter Hay, ISBN 1-55778-180-X, Copyrighy 1989 by Sidney Field. Sidney Field was a close friend to Krishnamurti and the book is about all the encounters he had with K. At page 117, Sidney wrote: My brother, John, died early in January, 1972.
